Skid steer loaders (also known as compact loaders or farm loaders) are small, highly manoeuvrable wheeled loaders with a compact design and fixed-wheel steering. Operating weights typically range from 1.5 to 4.5 tonnes, with bucket capacities of 0.3 to 1.0 m³.

Variants include classic skid-steer models with wheel steering, compact loaders on crawler tracks (CTL) for uneven terrain, telescopic loaders for high lifting heights, and Bobcat-style models with a swing arm. Electric variants are also gaining in popularity.

Common manufacturers include Bobcat (the original inventor), Caterpillar, JCB, Wacker Neuson, Kubota, Case, New Holland, Komatsu and Hyundai.

Skid-steer loaders are used in gardening and landscaping, building demolition and renovation, in agriculture (livestock farming), at recycling centres, in warehousing and logistics, and on tight inner-city construction sites. Attachments such as pallet forks, earth augers, snow ploughs, asphalt cutters, sorting grapples and high-tipping buckets extend their range of applications.
