What we look for in used rollers
Drums and vibrators: wear and grooves on the drums, bearing noises and oil level in the vibrators, operation of the vibration system (amplitude/frequency) and scrapers. A faulty vibrator is the most expensive component.
Articulated joint and drive: Play in the articulated pendulum joint (steer whilst the engine is running), hydrostatic drive running smoothly without jerking, drive motors leak-free. For roller trains, also check the rear axle, tyres and differential lock.
Sprinkler system and edging: Water tank free of rust; pump and nozzles unobstructed; edging press and cutting devices complete.
Engine, operating hours, documentation: cold start, smoke pattern, emission standard; tandem rollers operate for 400–800 hours a year, roller trains for longer. CE marking, declaration of conformity, annual inspection by a qualified person, ROPS and seatbelt.

How much does a used roller cost?
Second-hand walk-behind duplex rollers are in the high four-figure range, 1.5–2.5 t tandem rollers in the low to mid five-figure range, and road rollers from 7 t upwards are significantly higher. Factors influencing price include weight, year of manufacture, operating hours, the condition of the drive unit and the emissions standard.
Which roller is suitable for paving and landscaping?
A 1.5-t tandem roller (Bomag BW 80, Ammann ARX 12) is suitable for paving beds, gravel paths and small asphalt areas; for finished concrete paving, a vibratory plate with a rubber mat is preferable. From 2.5 t upwards, it is usually too large for landscaping.
Smooth drum or padfoot?
Smooth drum for gravel, sand, crushed stone and asphalt. Padfoot drum for cohesive, loamy soils – the lugs knead the material through. Trench rollers and road rollers are available in both designs, some with interchangeable segments.
How many operating hours are still acceptable?
Tandem rollers are used sparingly – 2,000 to 3,000 hours over ten years is normal. Roller trains used in earthworks can reach 6,000 to 10,000 hours. The key factors are the drive system, tyres, articulation and maintenance records.
