Which container suits your needs?
6 ft storage box (approx. 1.8 × 1.9 m): For tools, small equipment and fuel cans – fits on a trailer or flatbed, and can be moved using a forklift. The construction site’s toolbox.
8 ft and 10 ft storage containers (2.4 × 2.2 m / 3.0 × 2.4 m): Containex steel containers with double-leaf doors, wooden or steel flooring, galvanised and painted, stackable. Suitable for site stores, horticultural businesses, clubs and courtyards with limited space.
20 ft storage containers (6.0 × 2.4 m): The standard size: 33 m³ capacity, lifting eyes, forklift pockets, suitable for shelving; for materials storage, machinery shelters, archives, or conversion into workshops or toilet facilities.
Fittings: ventilation grilles, lock protection box, windows, electrical package (lighting, sockets), shelving, insulation – Containex offers these options ex-works; second-hand shipping containers are the more affordable alternative, showing signs of wear and tear.
What we look for in a container
Watertightness: Roof and door seals, floor free from rust perforation, no dents on the corner posts – a leaky container means a damp storage space.
Doors and lock: Doors that open and close smoothly, locking bars without warping, lock protection box to prevent bolt cutters.
Transport and installation: Lifting eyes or forklift pockets, level, load-bearing ground (point foundations or a bed of gravel), delivery by crane lorry or tipper lorry – check access.
Permits: Storage containers up to 75 m³ do not require planning permission in many federal states, and are usually exempt on building sites anyway; for permanent installation and use as a recreation room, check with the planning authority.

Frequently asked questions about storage containers
How much does a storage container cost?
New 8- to 10-ft containers are in the low to mid four-figure range, whilst new 20-ft containers are priced higher; second-hand shipping containers are cheaper but show signs of wear and tear. Price is determined by size, fittings (flooring, ventilation, electrical fittings) and delivery.
Do I need planning permission?
Generally not on building sites for the duration of the construction work. As permanent storage on company premises, small containers are exempt from planning permission in many federal states (often up to 75 m³); please check with the planning authority regarding communal areas, boundary distances and local development plans.
How is the container delivered?
By crane lorry or tipper lorry directly to the installation site – the access road must be clear for a 3-axle lorry. Small containers up to 8 ft can also be transported on a trailer or moved using a forklift.
Can I lease a container or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You should clarify the terms with the dealer or their financing partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
