Which crop protection equipment is right for your farm?
Mounted sprayers 800–1,500 l: Lemken Primus 45, Hardi Master Plus Pro. For farms up to approx. 150 ha, grassland and specialist crops. Rear-mounted, often combined with a front tank; low price, but limited coverage and high load on the rear axle.
Trailed sprayers 2,000–4,000 l: Hardi Navigator 3000 and 4000 (approx. €16,000–24,000), Hardi TZY 2400, Dammann ANP 2024, John Deere M 740i (approx. €42,000), Kverneland Rau Ikarus S38 with 30 m boom. The standard class for arable farms of 200 to 800 ha, usually with 24–30 m booms.
Large trailed sprayers 5,000–7,000 l: Hardi Commander 7000 Twin Force (air-assisted), Dammann 5830 Classic Dual-Air (approx. €49,000), Dammann ANP 5836 Profi Class, Inuma Professional 5030, Rau Spridotrain GVT 38. For large farms and contractors with boom widths of 30 to 36 m.

What we look for in second-hand field sprayers
Equipment inspection: In Germany, crop protection equipment must be inspected every six calendar half-years by an approved inspection workshop. A valid inspection sticker and the inspection report reveal a great deal about the pump, pressure gauge, nozzles and lateral distribution.
Boom: Check folding joints, pendulum suspension and damping for play; look for cracks in the boom arms and welded joints. A vibrating boom results in uneven distribution; automatic boom guidance systems, such as an ultrasonic boom guidance system, must be in working order.
Pump, fittings, pipework: Check the diaphragms of the piston diaphragm pump, pressure regulation, filters and non-return valves. Inspect pipework and nozzle racks for deposits and leaks. In recirculation systems, check the flow right up to the nozzle.
Tank and internal cleaning: Check plastic tanks for cracks and UV damage; check the rinse water tank and internal cleaning nozzles for proper function. A well-cleaned sprayer shows no residue on the strainers or in the rinse chamber.
Electronics and Section Control: Test the on-board computer or ISOBUS job computer, flow meter, section valves and individual nozzle control. Licences for Section Control and application maps are not always transferable – check with your dealer.

Hardi from Denmark is one of Europe’s largest sprayers manufacturers and offers everything from attachments to 7,000-litre trailed sprayers. Dammann from Lower Saxony builds trailed sprayers and self-propelled sprayers with a strong focus on boom control, whilst Horsch Leeb is a leading name in self-propelled sprayers. John Deere, Lemken, Kverneland Rau and Inuma round off the range, whilst Einböck specialises in harrow technology.

How much does a used field sprayer cost?
Basic mounted sprayers start at around €2,900. Trailed sprayers with a capacity of 3,000–4,000 litres and a working width of 24–30 metres cost around €16,000–45,000 €, whilst large trailed sprayers and self-propelled sprayers range from approximately 50,000 to 105,000 €.
Does a second-hand sprayer need to be inspected?
Yes. The equipment may not be used in Germany without a valid inspection sticker. If the inspection has expired, make sure to schedule an inspection and any necessary repairs to the pump, pressure gauge or nozzles before the season begins.
Trailed sprayer or self-propelled sprayer?
From around 1,000 ha of spraying area per year or when used for contract work, a self-propelled sprayer pays off due to its area coverage and ground clearance. Below this, a trailed sprayer is more economical, as the tractor is already available.
What boom width is suitable?
The boom width must match the tramline width, typically 24, 27, 30 or 36 m. If you wish to change the tramlines, you will also need to adapt the seed drill and fertiliser spreader.
What are the benefits of air-assisted application?
Systems such as Hardi Twin Force or Dammann Dual-Air use a stream of air to force the droplets into the crop. This reduces drift in windy conditions and improves coverage in dense crops; however, it increases weight, maintenance requirements and cost.
Can I lease or finance a field sprayer?
