Emergency power generators

Emergency power generators are self-contained generator sets that kick in during a power cut to supply electricity to critical loads. They combine an internal combustion engine, a generator and a control system in a single unit.

Power ratings range from small units (5–30 kVA) for detached houses to large-scale systems exceeding 2,000 kVA for hospitals and data centres. Standard power sources are diesel and gas engines, supplemented by synchronous or asynchronous generators.

Leading manufacturers include Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU Onsite Energy, SDMO / Kohler, FG Wilson, Eisemann, Atlas Copco, Pramac, Himoinsa and Geko.

Emergency power generators are used in hospitals, care homes, data centres, telecommunications infrastructure, by water and electricity suppliers, in banks, in industrial production requiring an uninterrupted power supply, and in administrative buildings with security infrastructure.
