Cranes are lifting machines used for the vertical and horizontal transport of heavy loads on construction sites, in ports and in industry. The main types differ in terms of mobility, lifting capacity and place of use.

Common variants include mobile cranes (truck-mounted cranes) on lorries or special chassis with lifting capacities ranging from 30 to over 1,000 tonnes, crawler cranes for very heavy loads and rough terrain, tower cranes (construction cranes) as quick-erect or top-slewing models for long-term large-scale projects, loading cranes as truck-mounted units for loading and unloading operations, and indoor cranes for use within buildings.

Common manufacturers include Liebherr, Tadano (formerly Demag), Manitowoc / Grove, Terex, Sennebogen, Palfinger, Hiab, Wolffkran, Potain and Linden Comansa.

Cranes are used in building construction, bridge construction, industrial plant construction, heavy haulage, in ports for container handling, in shipyards, in wind turbine assembly, and for event and advertising installations.
