Lathes are the standard machine tools used for the machining of rotationally symmetrical metal workpieces. The workpiece rotates whilst the tool (turning tool) is fed along the feed axis to remove material.

The main types are universal lathes (manual, classic workshop solution), CNC lathes (numerically controlled, high repeatability), vertical lathes (vertical axis for large parts), turning centres with driven tools for complete machining, sliding head lathes for long, slender parts, as well as lathes with a Y-axis and multi-spindle lathes for series production.

Common manufacturers include DMG Mori, Mazak, Okuma, Doosan, Haas, Hardinge, Index-Traub, EMCO, Romi, Schaublin, Spinner and Tornos (long-turning).

Lathes are used in tool and mould making, contract manufacturing, mechanical engineering, the automotive supply industry, aerospace, medical technology manufacturing, as well as in training companies and universities.
