Planing machines

Planing machines are woodworking machines used for smoothing and levelling wooden surfaces, as well as for achieving precise dimensions. They form part of the basic equipment in any joinery or carpentry workshop.

The main types are surface planers (straight and flat planing of one side of a workpiece), thickness planers (parallel planing of the second side to size), combination planer-thicknessers (both functions in one machine, ideal for small workshops), four-sided planers (machines all four sides in a single pass, for profile and mass production) and automatic planers with CNC control.

Leading manufacturers include Weinig (market leader in four-sided planers), Felder, Hammer, SCM, Casadei, Martin, Format-4, Holz-Her and Robland.

Planing machines are used in joinery and carpentry workshops, in solid wood processing plants, in window, door and staircase manufacturing, in sawmills with further processing facilities, and in industrial profile production (e.g. mouldings, profiled timber).
