Which saw is right for your workshop?
Slitting circular saws and table saws: The Martin T72 A is a top-of-the-range slitting circular saw for daily panel cutting, featuring a sliding carriage and scoring unit. For smaller workshops, finishing work and assembly, there are simple table saws such as the Ulmia 1622, the Flott Flotjet 2000 and the Graule AGT, which can be used as both a pull-through and a table saw. The A. Reckers ATS timber circular saw is designed for formwork and timber on the building site.
Cutting to length and mitre cuts: the Graule ZS 135/N and other Graule pull-type circular saws, an Emmegi mitre saw, the Pfeiffer Piccolo pendulum saw and the Striffler 2750-E double mitre circular saw for frames and profiles. The Rema DMGB-35 double cross-cut saw with automated feed cuts both ends in a single operation.
Optimisation cross-cut saws: the Dimter OptiCut 700 and Weinig OptiCut 260 (built in 2022) measure the workpiece, trim out imperfections such as knots or cracks, and cut to length according to the cutting list. For laminated timber, window and staircase production, this is the machine that significantly reduces material wastage.
Panel cutting, splitting, combination: The Striebig Automat TRK 6220 AV vertical panel saw saves floor space compared to a horizontal saw. The SCM M3 multi-blade saw cuts planks into several strips, whilst band saws from Elektra-Beckum (BAS 600) and Pehaka handle mitre and cross-cuts. Combined machines from Kirchner Leipzig and Bäuerle, as well as the APK automatic sawing and milling machine, combine several operations.
What we look for in second-hand saws
Cutting length and cutting height: The length of the feed carriage determines whether you can process whole panels (2,800 × 2,070 mm) or only cut-to-size pieces. Cutting height and saw blade diameter determine whether solid timber from 100 mm thick can be cut in a single pass.
Scoring unit and swivel: A functioning scoring unit prevents tear-outs on the underside of coated panels. The saw shaft must be able to swivel up to 45° without play, and the scale must be accurate.
Guides and carriage: The sliding carriage should run smoothly and without play; we check the guide rails, mitre stop and rip fence for wear and to ensure they are at right angles.
Drive and bearings: Motor power, bearing noise from the saw shaft, condition of the V-belts and the brake. The motor brake must bring the blade to a standstill within a few seconds of the machine being switched off.
Safety and extraction: The guard, riving knife and emergency stop must be present and in working order; the extraction connection should be compatible with the existing system. For optimised cross-cut saws, we also check the length measurement, control system and feed mechanism.

How much does a second-hand panel saw cost?

Is a second-hand optimisation cross-cut saw worth it?
Yes, if you’re cutting solid timber to length in batches, for example for glued laminated timber, windows or staircases. The saw automatically cuts out imperfections and optimises the lengths; the savings in timber and labour time usually pay for the purchase price more quickly than with a new machine.
Vertical or horizontal panel saw?
A vertical saw such as the Striebig TRK takes up only a fraction of the floor space and can be operated by a single person. Horizontal panel saws offer greater flexibility when working with solid timber, as well as for mitre and bevel cuts.
Do I need a scoring saw?
For coated chipboard, veneered boards and HPL, yes – without a scoring unit, the underside will tear. For cutting solid wood only, it is not essential.
What documentation should a second-hand saw have?
An instruction manual, preferably a CE mark and a declaration of conformity for machines manufactured from 1995 onwards, plus a full set of safety guards. Older machines must comply with the requirements of the Industrial Safety Regulations; any missing guards or split wedges should be replaced before the machine is put into operation.
Can I view a saw before buying it?
Yes, arrange an appointment directly with the dealer. For larger machines, it is worth carrying out a test cut; also clarify the arrangements for dismantling, loading and transport.
