Which feed mixer is right for your farm?
Vertical mixers with a single auger up to 16 m³: BVL V-Mix 13 L, Trioliet 2/1600 ZK. For dairy farms with up to approx. 80 cows or beef cattle farms with one mix per day. Low power requirement, from approx. 70–90 PS.
Vertical mixers with two augers, 20–24 m³: Trioliet Solomix 2-2400 VLH T (year of manufacture 2018, approx. €18,000), Solomix 2-2400L, Trioliet TR 2-20 VLB (towed, 20 m³, approx. €31,500), BVL V-Mix Plus 24-2s, Siloking Trailed Line Classic Duo 22 (demonstration model, approx. €49,900). For 120–200 cows, with tandem axle and cross-conveyor for feed distribution on both sides.
Silage block cutters and distribution equipment: Trioliet TU 195 and Strautmann Siloblitz 260 KD. These cut clean blocks from the mobile silo and distribute them without mixing – for farms that feed forage separately.
Bale breaking and front loader equipment: Kubota BC 2300 bale breaker for straw and hay bales, Saphir SSZ 220 and SSZE 220 SL silage cutting tongs for front loaders and farm loaders. They produce a smooth cut surface and reduce post-harvest heating in the silo.
What we look for in second-hand forage mixers
Auger and blades: Check the auger flighting for wear and material thickness – with a lot of straw and sand, the outer edge wears down quickly. Blades, blade holders and counter-blades must be sharp and secure; broken blades prolong the mixing time.
Tank and floor: Silage acids corrode the steel. We check for rust-through in the floor panel, particularly around the auger bearings, and for cracks in the welds. Retrofitted wear plates are acceptable provided they are neatly fitted.
Gearbox and drive: Check the planetary gearbox beneath the auger for leaks and noise; check the manual gearbox (two-speed) for smooth gear changes; check the drive shaft with cam-operated clutch. Damage to the gearbox can easily cost a four-figure sum.
Weighing system: Weighing bars, cables and the weighing computer must all be in good working order – without a correct weighing system, there can be no accurate rationing. Load a known weight as a test. Rationing programmes and data transmission are a bonus.
Discharge and chassis: discharge door, cross-conveyor belt or chute, hydraulic cylinders and hinges. For tandem axles, check wheel bearings, brakes and tyres for even wear.

Trioliet from the Netherlands is one of the leading specialists in vertical mixers and block cutters, whilst BVL (Bernard van Lengerich) from the Emsland region manufactures vertical mixers with high cutting capacity. Siloking specialises in feed mixing technology, whilst Strautmann is known for the Siloblitz. Frequently asked questions about second-hand forage mixers
How much does a used forage mixer cost?
Trailed vertical mixers with a capacity of 20–24 m³ and built around 2018 cost approx. €18,000–32,000, whilst near-new demonstration machines cost approx. €50,000. Silage cutters and bale unravellers start at around €950.
How big does the mixer need to be?
As a rough guide, we estimate a mixing volume of around 0.12–0.15 m³ per dairy cow per mix. For 150 cows with one mix per day, a 20–24 m³ mixer is therefore suitable; if you mix twice a day, a smaller mixer will suffice.
One or two augers?
One auger is sufficient for up to approx. 16 m³. Above that, two augers mix more quickly and evenly, and the overall height remains lower – which is important for low-ceilinged barns and passageways.
Vertical or horizontal mixer?
Vertical mixers reliably break up whole bales of hay and straw and require less drive power. Horizontal mixers mix more quickly and have a lower profile, but cope less well with long roughage.
How often do the blades and auger need replacing?
Depending on the feed ration, blades are resharpened or replaced annually. With proper maintenance, the auger will last 8–12 years, though less if there is a lot of straw and sand. Welded wear strips extend its service life.
