PLC controls

PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) are the standard control system for industrial automation. They process digital and analogue signals, execute logic programmes and control actuators in real time.

Designs vary according to size: compact PLCs (micro-class for small machines), modular mid-range PLCs (e.g. Siemens S7-1500), high-performance PLCs for large plants, and safety PLCs for safety-critical applications with SIL certification.

Leading manufacturers include Siemens (SIMATIC S7-1200/1500), Allen-Bradley / Rockwell (ControlLogix), Beckhoff (TwinCAT), Mitsubishi Electric, Schneider Electric (Modicon), Phoenix Contact, Omron and Wago.

PLCs are used in almost all industrial applications: machine tools, packaging systems, conveyor technology, process engineering, food production, pharmaceuticals, water/wastewater treatment plants, and in the building automation of large properties.
