Milling machines are machine tools used for the machining of workpieces using rotating multi-edged tools. Unlike a lathe, the tool rotates whilst the workpiece is fed along the axis.
The main types are universal milling machines (manual, traditional workshop), vertical and horizontal milling machines, CNC milling machines (3- to 5-axis), gantry and bridge milling machines for large workpieces, tool milling machines and high-speed milling machines (HSC) for toolmaking.
Common manufacturers include DMG Mori, Hermle, Mazak, Okuma, Haas, Heller, Makino, EMCO, Spinner, Deckel Maho, Fehlmann and SHW (large-scale machines).
Milling machines are used in tool and mould making, contract manufacturing, the aerospace industry, medical technology (implants), mechanical and plant engineering, and in the automotive supply industry for prototypes and production parts.
