Tipper lorries are lorries or trailers with a hydraulically tilting body designed for transporting bulk materials such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, soil, construction waste or asphalt. The body typically tips backwards, although special designs also allow for sideways tipping (3-way tippers).
The main types are 3-way tippers for flexible unloading, rear-tippers for standard construction transport, half-pipe skips for asphalt transport, 4-axle tippers for high payloads (up to 19 t) and semi-trailer tippers in articulated lorries for long-distance transport.
Common chassis manufacturers include Mercedes-Benz Arocs, MAN TGS, Scania XT series, Volvo FMX, DAF CF Construction and Iveco T-Way. Bodywork manufacturers include Meiller, Schmitz Cargobull, Carnehl, Schwarzmüller and Welaki.
Tippers are used in the construction industry (transport of earth and bulk materials), in quarries, in asphalt production and laying, in recycling, in the sand and gravel industry, and in winter maintenance (gritting vehicle bodies).
