The retarder reduces the load on the service brakes on downhill gradients and minimises wear and tear.
Lowliner / Volume: MAN TGX 18.510 Lowliner (year of manufacture 2019, approx. €19,500). Smaller wheels and a low fifth-wheel height allow for mega semi-trailers with an internal height of around 3 m – in high demand in the automotive and bulk logistics sectors.
Heavy-duty 6x4: MAN TGX 26.560 6x4 for a gross combination weight of up to 90 t (year of manufacture 2016, approx. €28,900). Two driven rear axles, a reinforced chassis and high engine power for low-loaders carrying construction machinery, transformers or steel. For loads exceeding 40 t, a special permit is required for every journey.
What we look for in used tractor units
Mileage and maintenance: Long-haul tractor units easily clock up over 100,000 km a year. Crucial factors include a complete maintenance history with the manufacturer’s service centre, the condition of the clutch or automatic gearbox, and a clean fault memory.
Fifth-wheel coupling: Wear on the coupling plate and locking mechanism, play in the kingpin, lubrication. The fifth-wheel coupling must match the fifth-wheel height of the semi-trailer.
Retarders and brakes: Function of all retarder stages, brake discs and pads, EBS faults. For heavy-duty vehicles, also check the condition of the axles and differential locks.
Emissions standard and documentation: Euro 6 for tolls and low-emission zones, AdBlue system, particulate filter. The MOT and safety inspection, as well as the tachograph inspection, should be up to date.

What is a lowliner?
A tractor unit with a lowered fifth-wheel height due to smaller wheels. It tows mega semi-trailers with an internal height of around 3 m and a total height of 4 m, thus offering greater load capacity.
Why do I need a retarder?
The retarder brakes without causing wear and maintains speed on downhill gradients. This protects brake discs and pads and is an important safety feature in mountainous terrain and when carrying heavy loads.
When do I need a 6x4 tractor unit?
When regularly hauling a gross combination weight in excess of 40 t, for example with low-loaders for construction machinery. Two drive axles provide traction, and the chassis is designed for high fifth-wheel loads.
What is a normal mileage for a tractor unit?
After five years of long-haul operation, 500,000 to 700,000 km is typical. Modern engines can manage significantly more with regular servicing; we therefore check service records, oil consumption and the condition of the turbocharger and fuel injection system.
