Machining centres

Machining centres (MCs) are highly automated CNC machine tools equipped with an automatic tool changer and usually multiple moving axes. They combine milling, drilling, threading and, in some cases, turning operations in a single set-up.

The main types are vertical machining centres (VMC) for standard workpieces, horizontal machining centres (HMC) with pallet changers for series production, 5-axis machining centres for complex geometries, gantry machining centres for very large parts, turning-milling centres for complete machining, and high-performance HSC centres for toolmaking.

Common manufacturers include DMG Mori, Mazak, Hermle, Okuma, Heller, Makino, Haas, Doosan, GROB, Chiron, Spinner and Brother.

Machining centres are used in series production within the automotive industry, in tool and mould making, in aerospace, in medical technology, in mechanical engineering, in contract manufacturing, and by specialist suppliers of high-precision parts.
