Which trailer is right for your machine?
Car-mounted construction machinery trailers, 2.7–3.5 t: Stema BMAT O2 27/35, Saris Magnum Maxx 350/Explorer 350, Saris PL 356 high-loader. Tandem axle, aluminium ramps, lowerable or with ramps – for mini-excavators up to 2.5 t, vibratory plates, rammers, compressors and generators. Requires a BE driving licence (or B96 for a maximum gross combination weight of 4.25 t).
Low-loaders 6–9 t: Blomenröhr 552/6900 and 553/7500, Thaler TTA 2091B, Schmidt FSLA. For wheel loaders, mobile excavators up to 6 t, rollers, telescopic handlers – towed behind a lorry or heavy towing vehicle, category C1E/CE.

What we look out for in second-hand trailers
Frame and floor: corrosion on the frame, ramp mountings and lashing eyes; condition of the floor (wood, steel, chequered aluminium); deformation due to overloading.
Axles, brakes, tyres: overrun brake (response, automatic return), brake linings, wheel bearing play, tyre age (DOT – trailer tyres age faster than they wear down), shock absorbers.
Ramps and load securing: Ramps free from cracks, secure locking mechanism, sufficient lashing points for the machinery; for cable reel trailers, check the mounting, hydraulics and brake of the reel.
Documents: Registration, valid MOT, vehicle registration certificate; for tippers and hydraulic systems, also the functional test. Payload = gross vehicle weight minus kerb weight – calculate the machine plus attachments.

Which trailer do I need for a mini-excavator?
For mini-excavators up to 1.8 t, a 2.7-t trailer is sufficient; for those up to 2.5 t, a 3.5-t trailer is required – both fitted with aluminium ramps and a tandem axle. Include the weight of the bucket in your calculations and allow for a 10 per cent margin. For machines weighing 3 t or more, you’ll need a low-loader.
What driving licence do I need?
Category B: trailers up to 750 kg or a combined vehicle weight of up to 3.5 t. B96: combined vehicle weight of up to 4.25 t. BE: trailers up to 3.5 t behind any passenger car. Low-loaders over 3.5 t require a C1E or CE licence.
How much does a construction machinery trailer cost?
New 3.5-tonne trailers with ramps are in the mid four-figure range; second-hand 7-tonne tandem low-loaders are similarly priced, whilst new ones are in the five-figure range; cable reel trailers with hydraulics are significantly more expensive. The main factors driving up the price are payload, ramps, lowering mechanism, hydraulics and the condition of the brakes and tyres.
How do I secure the machine on the trailer?
Use lashing chains or straps at the machine’s four lashing points, diagonally; lower and lock the boom; place any attachments on the ground. The centre of gravity must be over the axles; observe the drawbar load (at least 4 per cent of the trailer load).
