Stema, based in Saxony, is one of Germany’s leading manufacturers of car trailers. Of particular interest to the construction and commercial sectors are the construction machinery transporters from the BMAT and CARRIER ranges, three-way tippers and cable reel transporters. The trailers are supplied by GSK Baumaschinen in Hanhofen; the stock changes regularly.
Stema at a glance
Behind the brand is STEMA Metalleichtbau GmbH, based in Großenhain near Dresden. The company was founded in 1951 as VEB STEMA Ofenbau and initially manufactured furnaces; in 1967, the business moved into a former textile factory in the Großraschütz district of Großenhain. In 1969, the first car trailers were produced on the initiative of the engineers. Following German reunification, Stema was privatised in 1991, and a plant in Kecskemét, Hungary, was added in 2001. In 2009, the millionth trailer rolled off the production line.
According to the company’s own figures, Stema now manufactures around 40,000 to 45,000 car trailers a year, employing around 150 to 160 staff and its own apprentices, all ‘made in Germany’. The range extends from simple box trailers through the modular SySTEMA system to vehicle and construction machinery transporters with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 tonnes.

What the Stema model designation reveals
For construction machinery transporters, the model follows a clear pattern: series code + maximum authorised mass in 100 kg – approximate loading area length in dm – approximate loading area width in dm. Number of axles. BMAT refers to the BAUMA series, SHA to the CARRIER XL and XXL high-loaders, and KT to the cable drum transporter. A BMAT O2 35-40-18.2 therefore has a gross vehicle weight (zGG) of 3,500 kg, a loading area of around 400 × 180 cm and two axles; a CARRIER XL SHA O2 15-30-18.1 is a single-axle vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 1,500 kg and a loading area of approximately 301 × 183 cm. The manufacturer does not explain the ‘O2’ suffix. The type plate and vehicle documents are always authoritative.
| Model | Specifications | Typical use |

| BMAT O2 25-30-14.2 | 2.5 t gross vehicle weight, payload around 1.9 t, loading area 301 × 140 cm, 13-inch | Mini-excavators up to around 1.5 t, vibratory plates |
| BMAT O2 27-30-14.2 | 2.7 t gross vehicle weight, payload approx. 2.1 t, 301 × 140 cm, aluminium ramps | Mini excavators around 1.8 t with buckets |
| BMAT O2 35-36-16 | 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, payload approx. 2.8 t, 353 × 165 cm, ramps 1.70 m | Mini excavators up to approx. 2.5 t, skid-steer loaders |
| BMAT O2 35-40-18.2 | 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, payload approx. 2.65 t, 400 × 180 cm | longer equipment, rollers, mini-dumpers |

What we look for in a second-hand Stema
Maximum authorised mass (zGG) and payload: A BMAT with a 3.5 t zGG can carry around 2.6 to 2.8 t. The machine, bucket and accessories must remain below this limit; the towing capacity of the towing vehicle must match the zGG.
Overrun brake and axles: Stema construction machinery transporters are fully braked. Check the overrun brake mechanism, brake cables, wheel brakes and rubber-sprung axles for proper function and play; inspect the shock absorbers and the heavy-duty support wheel.
Ramps and lashing points: Check aluminium access ramps for bends and cracks, and ensure the lever locks on the ramp securing mechanism are securely fastened. The BAUMA model has four lashing rails on each side, whilst the CARRIER model has a railing with numerous lashing points – neither should be torn or bent.
Tyres, floor and documentation: Check the tyres (10 or 13 inches) for age, load capacity and damage from standing, and check the screen-printed floor for swelling. Ensure you are provided with the registration certificate, a valid general inspection certificate and, for newer trailers, the Certificate of Conformity (COC).

Frequently asked questions about Stema
Where are Stema trailers manufactured?
Stema is based in Großenhain near Dresden in Saxony, where it has been manufacturing car trailers since 1969. Since 2001, there has also been a factory in Kecskemét, Hungary.
What does BMAT O2 35-36-16 mean?
BMAT stands for the BAUMA range of construction machinery transporters. 35 stands for a maximum authorised mass of 3,500 kg; 36 and 16 roughly indicate the load area in decimetres – in this case, approximately 353 × 165 cm. A suffix of .2 or .1 indicates the number of axles for other models.
What is the difference between BAUMA and CARRIER XL?
The BAUMA transporters have walk-on steel mudguards alongside the loading area and four lashing points on each side. The CARRIER XL high-loaders have the wheels beneath the loading area, a railing with numerous lashing points and a shallower ramp angle of 12 to 14 degrees.
Do Stema construction machinery transporters have brakes?
Yes, all Stema construction machinery transporters are fitted with brakes, specifically overrun brakes. They also include a heavy-duty support wheel and shock absorbers.
Which Stema model is suitable for a mini-excavator?
For excavators up to around 1.8 t, a BMAT with a 2.7 t gross vehicle weight rating is often sufficient; for machines around 2.5 t, the 3.5 t class is required. The decisive factor is the payload, including the bucket and quick-change coupler.
What is a cable drum transporter used for?
It transports heavy cable reels to the construction site – typically used in cable and line construction; the specifications, such as a winch and stabiliser legs, are listed in the advert. Stema offers it as a KT with a gross vehicle weight of 2.7 and 3.5 t.
What documents come with a Stema trailer?
Registration certificate (Parts I and II), a valid general inspection certificate and, for new and recent trailers, the Certificate of Conformity (COC). The type plate and documentation should match the model and maximum authorised mass specified in the advert.
Can I lease a Stema trailer or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
