Buy new and used Mecalac mobile excavators, compact excavators, loaders and dumpers – a wide selection directly from specialist dealers. Mecalac manufactures compact, manoeuvrable construction machinery for tight urban building sites. We mainly stock this brand’s mobile excavators and multi-purpose loaders in the wheeled loader category, though depending on availability, we also offer crawler excavators and dumpers. Each listing specifies the year of manufacture, operating hours, weight and specifications. The machines are supplied by GSK Baumaschinen in Hanhofen and Bontebok Trading in the Netherlands; stock is constantly changing.
Mecalac at a glance
Mecalac was founded in 1974 in Annecy-le-Vieux, France; the name stands for ‘Mécanique du Lac’. The company is still based in Annecy today. In 1995, Henri Marchetta took over the PEL-JOB Group, to which Mecalac belonged, and in 1999 this became the Groupe Mecalac. In 2002, Mecalac acquired the skid-steer loader manufacturer Ahlmann from Büdelsdorf in Schleswig-Holstein. Ahlmann had been founded in 1952 and launched its first skid-steer loaders in 1953; the factory is now known as Mecalac Baumaschinen GmbH. In 2017, the Terex Construction Equipment plant in Coventry, UK – the source of the TA dumpers and TLB backhoe loaders – was added to the group. In the same year, Mecalac established a subsidiary in Turkey. Mecalac focused on excavators capable of loading from an early stage: in 2009, the 8MCR was launched – a crawler excavator capable of travelling at speed and operating like a loader – followed in 2011 by the 10MCR.
Since 10 June 2025, Mecalac has been wholly owned by the French FAYAT Group, where it forms part of the road construction machinery division. BOMAG is also part of this division. In 2024, Fayat generated a turnover of around 5.9 billion US dollars and employed 23,410 people. Mecalac continues to operate as a separate brand, with factories in France, Germany, the UK and Turkey, and more than 200 dealers worldwide. Recent new products include the e12 electric wheeled excavator (first delivery in 2022) and the Revo990 backhoe loader with a rotating cab (2025).

What the Mecalac model designation reveals
For excavators, the number at the start roughly indicates the weight class in tonnes. An 11MWR weighs 10 to 11 t, an 8MCR 7.2 to 7.6 t. The letters denote the product family: MWR models are wheeled excavators, MCR models are crawler excavators that also function as loaders, and MSX/MTX/MRX models are the Series 12 wheeled excavator-loaders. These combine a mobile excavator, a wheel loader and a telescopic handler in a single machine. A typical feature of Mecalac is the three-section boom, which gives the excavator great manoeuvrability and reach in confined spaces. Added to this is the Connect quick-change system, which is operated from the cab. For the dumpers, the number indicates the payload in tonnes (TA1 to TA9, 3.5MDX to 9MDX). The AS swing loaders are based on Ahlmann designs; AX models are articulated wheel loaders; MCL models are compact multi-purpose loaders; and TLB models are backhoe loaders.
| Model | Data | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| MCL6+ | 2.39 t, 36 kW, lifting capacity up to 2,170 kg, 1.10 m wide | Gardening and landscaping, farmyards, transporting building materials in confined spaces |
| 8MCR | 7.2–7.6 t, 55.4 kW (Deutz), up to 10 km/h | Excavation and loading with a single machine in road and pipeline construction |
| 10MCR | The next size up in the MCR range above the 8MCR, since 2011 | Urban civil engineering, rapid repositioning on site |
| 11MWR | 10–11 t, 55.4 kW, all-wheel steering, up to 4 t lifting capacity in all directions | Sewer and pipework installation in roadways |
| 12MTX | 9.7–10.8 t, 85 kW, up to 32 km/h | Excavator, wheel loader and forklift in a single machine for local authorities and civil engineering contractors |
| 714MW / 714MC | Older series with around 85–100 PS, on wheels (MW) or tracks (MC) | Civil engineering, track laying (dual-mode version) |
| AS900tele | 7.25 t, 55.4 kW, 180° swing range, up to 2,270 kg on the forks | Loading lorries, backfilling trenches, building yard |
| TA9 | Dumper with 9 t payload | Earthworks, road construction, material transport on large building sites |
What we look for in a used Mecalac
Boom and joints: The three-section boom has more joints than a single-section boom. Check for play on all pins and bushings, on the swing block and on the slewing ring. The hoses and pipes on the centre section are equally important.
Quick-change couplers and attachments: The Connect system, including the locking indicator, and the supplied tools such as the loading bucket, backhoe bucket, pallet fork and trench cleaning bucket significantly determine the machine’s value. They are what make the machine’s versatility truly useful.
Undercarriage and operational profile: MCR excavators travel faster and load more than traditional compact excavators, which means that tracks, sprockets and track rollers wear out accordingly. For mobile excavators and Series 12 machines, inspect the axles, all-wheel steering and brakes.
Generation and documentation: There are several generations with similar names, such as the 12MXT and 12MTX, and they differ technically. Check the year of manufacture, type plate and service log, and ensure you are provided with the CE Declaration of Conformity and the UVV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Mecalac
Which group does Mecalac belong to?
Since 10 June 2025, Mecalac has been wholly owned by the French FAYAT Group, where it forms part of the road construction machinery division. BOMAG also belongs to this division. Mecalac continues to operate as a separate brand based in Annecy.
What makes Mecalac excavators special?
The three-section boom makes the excavator highly manoeuvrable in confined spaces; an 11MWR, for example, can lift up to 4 t in all directions. Many models can also load: the MCR crawler excavators and the Series 12 wheeled excavators often replace a second machine on tight construction sites.
What do MWR, MCR and MTX stand for?
In the range, MWR stands for wheeled excavators, MCR for crawler excavators with a loading function, and MSX, MTX and MRX for the Series 12 wheeled excavator-loaders. The number preceding the letters roughly indicates the weight class in tonnes.
Which second-hand Mecalac machines are most commonly traded?
Particularly common are the wheeled excavators of the 12 series (12MXT, 12MTX, 12MSX) and the 714MW, as well as the 8MCR crawler excavator, the AS series swing loaders and the AX series wheel loaders.
Are Ahlmann and Mecalac the same company?
Yes. Mecalac took over the manufacturer Ahlmann, based in Büdelsdorf, in 2002. The factory is now called Mecalac Baumaschinen GmbH and continues to manufacture the AS series of swing loaders. Older Ahlmann loaders are serviced through the Mecalac network.
Why are there Mecalac dumpers with the Terex logo?
In 2017, Mecalac took over the Terex Construction Equipment plant in Coventry. Since then, the dumpers and backhoe loaders built there have been marketed under the Mecalac brand. This is why second-hand machines are often still found bearing the Terex logo.
Are there any Mecalac machines with electric drives?
Yes. Mecalac offers the e12 electric wheeled excavator, the eS1000 and eS900tele electric articulated loaders, and the eMDX electric dumper.
Can I lease a Mecalac machine or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
