What we look for in second-hand sanding machines
Units: The contact roller (calibration, high stock removal) and the sanding shoe (fine sanding) have different functions. We check the rubber coating and concentricity of the rollers, as well as the covering on the sanding shoes.
Conveyor belt and table: The conveyor belt must not have any cracks; the table must be adjustable to remain parallel. A vacuum table holds short and thin workpieces securely.
Belt control and belt size: Pneumatic belt oscillation and the belt break shut-off must be in working order. The belt size should be a standard one so that sanding belts can be purchased at a reasonable price.
Application and wear: We enquire about operating time and materials. Machines used in interior finishing for intermediate sanding of painted surfaces are generally subject to less wear than calibrating machines in laminated timber production. For long-belt sanders, we check table movement, belt tension and belt run.
Extraction and fire safety: Sanding dust is fine and explosive. The machine requires a suitably sized extraction system; we check extraction hoods and spark arrestors to ensure they are complete.

Wide-belt or long-belt sander?
The long-belt sander is versatile for individual pieces and large surfaces, but requires manual operation. The wide-belt sander sands evenly and accurately in a single pass and is worthwhile as soon as you regularly work with laminated timber, doors or cabinet fronts.
What working width do I need?
1,100 mm is sufficient for fronts and frame parts; with 1,300 mm, you can also sand door leaves and wide laminated timber panels in a single pass.
What is the difference between calibrating and fine sanding?
During calibration, a hard contact roller with a coarse grit removes material and brings parts to a uniform thickness. Fine sanding, using a sanding shoe and fine grit, prepares the surface for varnish or oil.
What extraction system does a wide-belt sander require?
Wide-belt sanders require significantly more airflow than a panel saw. Before purchasing, check that your system meets the manufacturer’s specified requirements; otherwise, the belts will clog and dust will remain inside the machine.
Can I test a sander before buying it?
