Important: New mobile compressors from the former Ingersoll Rand production line have been marketed under other brands since 2007 – more on this below.

Ingersoll Rand at a glance – and why mobile compressors have different names today

Ingersoll Rand’s roots lie in the 19th century: Simon Ingersoll was granted a patent for a steam-powered rock drill and founded the Ingersoll Rock Drill Company in 1871; the Rand & Waring Drill & Compressor Company was established in 1872. In 1905, Ingersoll-Sergeant and Rand Drill merged to form Ingersoll-Rand. The company shaped the compressed air industry for decades, for example with the Type 30 piston compressor introduced in 1929, and also manufactured construction machinery for a long time.

The year 2007 was a pivotal one for second-hand construction compressors: On 30 November 2007, Ingersoll-Rand sold Bobcat, its utility division and its attachments to Doosan Infracore for US$4.9 billion – this included the portable compressors, generators and lighting towers. This became Doosan Portable Power, whose equipment was rebranded from Ingersoll Rand to Doosan by around 2012 and has been sold under the Bobcat brand since 2023. A second strategic shift followed in 2020: the industrial division of Ingersoll-Rand plc merged with Gardner Denver (founded in 1859) in March 2020, and the new company adopted the name Ingersoll Rand Inc.; the air conditioning division has been known as Trane Technologies ever since. Ingersoll Rand Inc. is based in Davidson (North Carolina), employed around 21,000 people in 2025 and had a turnover of US$7.65 billion. The group also owns the CompAir compressor brand.

What the Ingersoll Rand model designation reveals

When looking at second-hand Ingersoll Rand compressors, you’ll come across two different numbering systems. Units manufactured in Europe feature a colon: the first number is the nominal pressure in bar, whilst the second corresponds to the air delivery in tenths of a m³/min. A 7/41 therefore delivers around 4 m³/min at 7 bar, a 12/235 around 23.5 m³/min at 12 bar – the same system that Doosan continued to use after 2007. The American models, on the other hand, specify the flow rate in cfm (cubic feet per minute; 100 cfm ≈ 2.8 m³/min), with the letter preceding it indicating the pressure class: P around 100 psi (6.9 bar), XP 125 psi (8.6 bar), HP 150 psi (10.3 bar), VHP 200 psi (13.8 bar) and XHP 300 to 350 psi (around 21 to 24 bar). A P185 therefore delivers 185 cfm, approximately 5.2 m³/min, at 100 psi. Suffixes such as WJD or WCU usually denote model and motor variants.

ModelSpecificationsTypical application
7/20approximately 2 m³/min, 7 bara hammer, trades, local authorities
7/41approx. 4 m³/min, 7 barA civil engineering classic: two hammers, rental fleet
7/71around 7 m³/minmultiple consumers, blasting work
P185185 cfm (≈ 5.2 m³/min), 100 psi (≈ 6.9 bar)Most common US type: tools, construction
XP375 / HP375375 cfm (≈ 10.6 m³/min), 8.6 / 10.3 bar, approx. 2 tSandblasting, spray painting, pressure testing
VHP400 / VHP700400 / 700 cfm, 200 psi (≈ 13.8 bar)Drilling, pipelines, industry
12/235approx. 23.5 m³/min, 12 barLarge construction sites, shotcrete, air injection

What we look for in second-hand Ingersoll Rand equipment

Age and spare parts: Mobile Ingersoll Rand compressors were generally manufactured before 2012. Filters, separators and wear parts are supplied via the networks of the successor companies, Doosan and Bobcat; before purchasing a very old unit, it is worth enquiring about the condition of the engine and stage components.

Screw stage and oil circuit: Check the oil condition, separator cartridge and oil filter; observe the pressure build-up to the rated value and ensure clean unloading. A unit that cannot maintain pressure under load often requires an overhaul of the stage or the intake regulator.

Engine and emission standard: Older machines do not meet current emission standards. This must be clarified for construction sites with environmental regulations or tunnel work; compare the cold start, smoke emissions and operating hours with the maintenance record. Some US imports have different engines and labelling to European machines.

Chassis and documentation: Check the drawbar, overrun brake, lighting and tyres; ensure you are provided with the chassis registration documents, CE marking and operating instructions. For units with a generator, ensure you are provided with proof of the DGUV V3 inspection.

GSK Baumaschinen in Hanhofen supplements this with further Ingersoll Rand compressors. The direct successors to the mobile ranges can be found under Doosan and Bobcat; compressors from the same group under CompAir; and comparable machines under Atlas Copco and Kaeser.

Frequently asked questions about Ingersoll Rand

Are Ingersoll Rand construction compressors still available new?

Ingersoll Rand sold its mobile compressors, generators and lighting towers to Doosan in 2007. They were subsequently marketed as Doosan Portable Power and have been available under the Bobcat brand since 2023. Ingersoll Rand itself now primarily sells stationary compressors; mobile units within the group are supplied by CompAir.

What does 7/41 mean on Ingersoll Rand compressors?

The first number is the nominal pressure in bar, the second the air flow rate in tenths of a m³/min. A 7/41 therefore delivers around 4 m³/min at 7 bar – enough for one or two demolition hammers.

What do P185, XP375 or VHP400 mean?

These are American models: the number represents the air delivery in cfm, and the letter denotes the pressure class – P is around 100 psi, XP 125 psi, HP 150 psi, VHP 200 psi, and XHP 300 to 350 psi. A VHP400 therefore delivers 400 cfm (around 11.3 m³/min) at around 13.8 bar.

Are Ingersoll Rand and Doosan the same compressors?

Doosan took over the mobile compressor division from Ingersoll Rand in 2007 and rebranded the units under its own name by around 2012. Many Doosan compressors are, technically speaking, direct successors to the Ingersoll Rand series; consequently, model designations and spare parts are similar.

What is the connection between CompAir and Ingersoll Rand?

CompAir has been part of Gardner Denver since 2008. Since Gardner Denver merged with Ingersoll Rand’s industrial division in 2020 and adopted its name, CompAir has been a brand of Ingersoll Rand Inc.

Which second-hand Ingersoll Rand compressors are commonly traded?

From European production, primarily the 7-bar models such as the 7/41 and 7/20, as well as larger types such as the 12/235; from US production, the P185 and the high-pressure VHP and XHP models, which are in demand amongst drilling companies.

Can I get spare parts for older Ingersoll Rand compressors?

For mobile units, these are generally available through the Doosan or Bobcat network; for stationary units, through Ingersoll Rand. For very old units, it is worth checking with the dealer regarding the availability and price of key parts before purchasing.

Can I lease an Ingersoll Rand compressor or finance it via hire purchase?

For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can clarify the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
