What we look for in second-hand milling machines
Spindle and bearings: Concentricity, bearing noise and play in the milling spindle; a spindle diameter of 30 mm is standard, whilst some machines have interchangeable spindles. For swivel spindles, we check the clamping action in every position.
Speed settings and drive: All speed settings must change smoothly, and the motor brake must bring the tool to a rapid halt.
Stops and table: The milling table must be flat, the milling stop free of play, and the table rings complete. A sliding carriage or tenon carriage extends the machine’s range of use, for example for mortise and tenon joints or cross-cutting work.
Safety: Only tools marked ‘MAN’ may be used for manual feed. A feed mechanism significantly improves safety and surface quality; safety guards and the extraction hood must be complete.
Tools: We check the supplied router bits, spacer rings and profile cutters for marking and condition. A set of usable tools is often worth several hundred euros.
Chain planer: Condition of the chain, guide rail and sprocket, clamping device and depth stop.

30 mm is the standard in Europe; most commercially available tools fit this. Check your existing tools before buying a machine with a different spindle size.
Do I need a feed mechanism?

What is a chain mortiser used for?
For mortises and slots, such as in timber joints in roof trusses, stair stringers or mortise locks. The chain works significantly faster than a chisel or drill.
Can I test a router before buying it?
Arrange a viewing appointment directly with the dealer. A test run at all speed settings will show whether the bearings and drive are in good working order.
A table router with one or two spindles?
A single spindle is sufficient if you rarely switch between profiles. A dual-spindle machine is worthwhile for recurring combinations such as a profile and a counter-profile, as both tools remain set up.
