Atlas Copco at a glance

Atlas Copco was founded in Stockholm in 1873; the group’s headquarters are in Nacka, near Stockholm, and around 56,000 people work for the group worldwide. Construction site technology forms part of the Power Technique business area: mobile compressors, power generators, lighting masts, energy storage systems, drainage pumps and hand-held tools. Atlas Copco has been manufacturing mobile compressors since 1905, and the company launched its first mobile screw compressor in 1958. The mobile compressed air division is based in Antwerp, where the electric E-Air compressors have also been assembled since 2023. Since 2005, the compressors have featured the HardHat polyethylene housing, which neither rusts nor dents – a reliable distinguishing feature on the second-hand market.

Important when searching for second-hand equipment: Atlas Copco spun off its drilling and demolition technology division for mining and infrastructure – including hydraulic breakers, shears and pulverisers for excavators – as Epiroc in 2018; older attachments therefore still bear the Atlas Copco logo, whilst parts and service are handled by Epiroc. The road construction brand Dynapac was sold to Fayat in 2017. Compressors, generators, lighting masts, pumps and hand-held hammers, on the other hand, have remained with Atlas Copco. The group also includes Chicago Pneumatic (since 1987), whose mobile compressors are technically closely related to those of Atlas Copco.

Compressors: what the model designation reveals

The model code is structured logically: XA stands for mobile compressors; the letters that follow indicate the pressure class – XAS = 7 bar, XATS = 10.3 bar, XAHS = 12 bar, XAVS = 14 bar; XRVS and XRHS denote the high-pressure class from 20 bar upwards for drilling rigs. On newer models, a suffix such as ‘-10’ or ‘-14’ indicates the maximum pressure in bar. The current PACE (Pressure Adjusted through Cognitive Electronics) models can be set to the required pressure in 0.1-bar increments via the control unit – an XAS 188-14 can therefore handle the workload of two older machines. For second-hand machines, the engine type is often indicated after the model name: ‘Kd’ = Kubota diesel, ‘Dd’ = Deutz diesel, ‘CD’ = Caterpillar diesel.

We explain which class is suitable for which application in our guide ‘Choosing the Right Construction Compressor’; for drillers, there is a suitable Atlas Copco compressor for every drilling depth.

QAS generator sets: the number indicates the power output

For QAS units, the number corresponds to the continuous power output in kVA: a QAS 40 delivers around 40 kVA, a QAS 100 around 100 kVA. With the latest Stage V models for Europe, the figure varies slightly (QAS 20 = 17.5 kVA). The most commonly traded second-hand models are the QAS 20 and QAS 40 for containers, tools and small construction sites; the QAS 60 to QAS 100 for site power distribution units, cranes and pumps; and the QAS 325 for events and industrial use. All QAS units are sound-insulated diesel generators with a spill tray, built for hire; the QES series is the simpler mobile variant, whilst the QIS and QAC are stationary and containerised generators respectively.

What we look for in second-hand Atlas Copco equipment

Compressors – screw element and separator: Atlas Copco manufactures the compressor stage itself; with oil changes carried out according to schedule, it lasts 20,000 hours or more. Ask about the last separator replacement and check for oil mist on the valves. The compressor must maintain the rated pressure when idling and regulate it smoothly under load.

Engine and exhaust system: Stage V machines (from 2019) have particulate filters and are permitted to operate on any construction site; older Stage IIIA models are cheaper, but are excluded from low-emission zones and many tenders. The year of manufacture is stated in the advert.

Generators: Load test using a load bank or a real load; check voltage and frequency under load; check insulation monitors and residual current protection; check for oil dilution caused by long periods of idling. For use on construction sites, the generator must have passed the DGUV V3 test.

Enclosure, chassis, documentation: HardHat enclosures remain watertight; sheet metal enclosures from older model years rust at the edges. Check the overrun brake, lighting and roadworthiness certificate – a braked chassis is required for vehicles weighing over 750 kg. In addition, CE conformity, pressure vessel testing and a maintenance log are required.

Frequently asked questions about Atlas Copco

What do XAS, XATS, XAHS and XAVS stand for?

The letters indicate the pressure class: XAS = 7 bar, XATS = 10.3 bar, XAHS = 12 bar, XAVS = 14 bar. XRVS and XRHS are high-pressure compressors from 20 bar upwards for drilling rigs. The number indicates the performance class; on newer models, the suffix ‘-10’ or ‘-14’ denotes the maximum pressure.

What are the specifications of an Atlas Copco XAS 97?

The XAS 97 delivers around 5.3 m³/min at 7 bar and is one of the most commonly traded second-hand construction compressors – enough to power two demolition hammers or a rotary hammer with some reserve. The XAS 87 and the current XAS 88 have comparable specifications, delivering around 5 m³/min.

What does ‘QAS 40’ mean in relation to Atlas Copco generators?

QAS is the range of mobile, sound-insulated diesel generators; the number corresponds to the power output in kVA. A QAS 40 therefore delivers around 40 kVA – enough for several site huts, tools and smaller pumps. The exact power output is stated on the type plate and in the advertisement.

Atlas Copco or Kaeser – which is better?

Both are premium manufacturers with their own screw compressor technology and an extensive service network in Germany. Atlas Copco stands out for its stepless PACE pressure control, its extensive high-pressure range and its wide selection of generators, whilst Kaeser is known for its highly economical small compressors. When making a purchase decision, proximity to a dealer, maintenance history and price are usually the key factors.

Can I still get spare parts for older Atlas Copco machines?

Yes. Wear parts such as filters, separators and oil are available through authorised dealers, even for compressors and power units from the 2000s. Hydraulic breakers and drilling rigs have been supplied by Epiroc since 2018.

Are there electric Atlas Copco compressors?

Yes, the E-Air range (for example, the H250 and H450 VSD) runs on mains power with a variable-speed motor – ideal for city centres, indoor facilities and construction sites with noise or emissions restrictions where a power supply is available. For lighting masts, there is a battery-powered version, the HiLight Z3+, and a solar-powered version, the S2+.

Can I tow an Atlas Copco compressor with a car?

The small models in the 8 Series (XAS 38 to XAS 88) and the older XAS 37 to XAS 97 weigh less than 750 kg in their wheeled versions and may be towed without brakes by a vehicle with a Category B driving licence. Larger machines are braked and, depending on the total combination weight, require either a Class B (up to 3.5 t) or BE driving licence. The weight is stated in the advert.

Can I lease an Atlas Copco machine or finance it via hire purchase?

For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
