bomag

Buy new and used Bomag rollers, vibrating plates and rammers – a wide selection of compaction equipment direct from specialist dealers. For us, Bomag is primarily synonymous with ground compactors – forward-running and reversible vibratory plates from the BP and BPR series, as well as rammers from the BT series – and with rollers ranging from small tandem rollers to road rollers. Each listing specifies the year of manufacture, operating hours, operating weight, working width and engine. Supplied by Kraus Baumaschinen in Frankenthal and GSK Baumaschinen in Hanhofen; stock is constantly changing. We categorise the brand’s milling machines, pavers and recyclers under ‘Asphalt Processing’ and ‘Specialised Machinery’.

Bomag at a glance

BOMAG was founded in 1957 by Karl Heinz Schwamborn in Boppard on the Rhine – in a double garage. According to the company, the first machine, the BW 60, was the world’s first double-vibration roller with drive on both drums. This was followed in 1962 by the BW 200 tandem roller, which remained a bestseller for over 30 years; in 1969, the factory moved to the Hellerwald industrial estate, where BOMAG is still based today. In 1970, the founder sold the company to the US group Koehring; it later passed to SPX. Since 2005, BOMAG has been part of the French FAYAT Group. In 1983, BOMAG introduced the TERRAMETER, a compaction monitoring system, and in 2022, the e-PERFORMANCE electric range.

Today, according to its own figures, BOMAG employs more than 2,400 people and manufactures at five plants: Boppard, Ridgeway (USA), Changzhou (China), Alfonsine (Italy) and Pune (India). Around 250 products are distributed via eleven foreign subsidiaries and more than 400 dealers in approximately 150 countries. The range covers the entire spectrum of compaction – soil, asphalt and landfill – and, with milling machines, pavers and stabilisers, extends to the full scope of road construction.

What the Bomag model designation reveals

For vibratory plates, the name is almost a brief description: BP stands for forward-running plates, BPR for reversible plates, and BT for rammers. The number before the slash indicates the performance class based on centrifugal force in kN, whilst the number after it indicates the working width in centimetres – a BPR 35/60 is therefore a reversible plate in the 35 kN class with a working width of 60 cm. An appended ‘D’ denotes the diesel version, whilst ‘e’ denotes the battery-powered version. For rollers, ‘BW’ applies to all models. For light tandem rollers, the number roughly corresponds to the drum width (BW 80 = 800 mm, BW 120 = 1,200 mm), whilst for the 200 series roller trains, the suffix roughly corresponds to the weight in tonnes (BW 213 ≈ 12.6 t, BW 219 ≈ 19.4 t). Letters such as D (smooth drum) or PD (pounding drum) describe the drum type, whilst the suffix -4 or -5 indicates the generation. For cold milling machines, the first number indicates the milling width in millimetres; for pavers, ‘C’ stands for tracked undercarriage and ‘P’ for wheeled undercarriage.

What we look for in a used Bomag

Base plate and exciter on vibratory plates: wear and cracks on the base plate, condition of V-belts and centrifugal clutch, oil level in the exciter. On reversible BPR plates, we check whether forward and reverse operation switches smoothly and powerfully.

Engine and starting: Many vibratory plates and rammers are powered by Honda petrol or Hatz diesel engines. Test cold starting, manual starting or electric starting, oil consumption and performance under load; for rammers, inspect the ramming foot, bellows and lubrication.

Drums, articulated joint and vibration on rollers: Check the drum surface, scrapers, and bearing play of the vibration exciters and articulated joint. On tandem rollers, the spray system must operate effectively; for roller trains, check the drum bearings, drive system and gradability.

Hours and documentation: Compare operating hours with maintenance records; ensure ROPS and seat belts are provided for ride-on rollers, and that CE marking and UVV certification are included. Measurement systems such as TERRAMETER or ECONOMIZER increase the value.

Bomag at our company: Dealers and stock

Kraus Baumaschinen in Frankenthal stocks the majority of our Bomag inventory – mainly soil compactors, along with rollers. GSK Baumaschinen in Hanhofen supplements this with individual Bomag units. You can find comparable machines under Hamm, Ammann and Weber, whilst walk-behind compaction equipment is also available from Wacker Neuson.

Frequently asked questions about Bomag

What does BPR 35/60 mean in the context of Bomag?

BPR stands for reversible vibratory plate. The 35 refers to the performance class based on centrifugal force in kN, whilst the 60 denotes the working width in centimetres. A ‘D’ at the end indicates a diesel engine, whilst an ‘e’ denotes the battery-powered version.

What is the difference between BP and BPR?

BP vibratory plates only run forwards and are suitable for paving, sand and smaller areas. BPR vibratory plates can be driven forwards and backwards continuously, are heavier and compact to a greater depth – ideal in trenches and excavation pits where it is not possible to turn round.

Which Bomag rollers are the most commonly traded on the second-hand market?

On the major second-hand marketplaces, the light tandem rollers BW 100 and BW 120 lead the way, followed by the BW 154, the BW 213 roller and the BW 80. Among vibratory plates, the BPR 35/42 is one of the most common models.

What do the numbers on Bomag rollers mean?

For light tandem rollers, the number roughly corresponds to the drum width; a BW 120 has a width of 1,200 mm. For the BW 211 to BW 226 roller trains, the last digits roughly indicate the weight class in tonnes. The suffix -4 or -5 indicates the generation; the exact specifications are listed in the advert.

Which group does Bomag belong to?

BOMAG, based in Boppard, has been part of the French FAYAT Group since 2005. The company was founded in 1957 by Karl Heinz Schwamborn; today it manufactures at five plants in Germany, the USA, China, Italy and India.

Are there any Bomag compactors with rechargeable batteries?

Yes. Under the name e-PERFORMANCE, Bomag offers, amongst other things, the BT 60 E battery-powered rammer, reversible plates such as the BPR 35/60 e, and electric tandem rollers such as the BW 100 AD E-5 and BW 120 AD E-5.

How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Bomag roller?

Provided there is evidence of regular maintenance, 2,000 to 3,000 hours is no problem for light tandem rollers; heavy rollers and roller trains can manage significantly more. More important than the figure are the tyres, exciter bearings, articulation joint and water spray system.

Can I lease a Bomag roller or finance it via hire purchase?

For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
