BT at a glance
BT originally stood for the Swedish company BT Industries, which specialised in warehouse equipment and acquired the US manufacturer Raymond in 1997. In 2000, Toyota Industries acquired BT Industries; since then, BT has been part of the Toyota Material Handling Group, which has been the world’s largest manufacturer of industrial trucks since 2001. In Europe, counterbalanced forklifts are marketed under the Toyota brand, whilst warehouse equipment is marketed under BT – with a shared service and spare parts network. BT warehouse equipment is manufactured in Mjölby, Sweden, where, according to Toyota, around 90,000 hand pallet trucks and 60,000 electric warehouse handling trucks are produced annually; over 95 per cent of Toyota and BT equipment sold in Europe comes from European factories.
Important when searching for used equipment: on many portals, BT equipment is also listed as ‘Toyota’ or ‘Toyota BT’. A ‘Toyota SWE’ or ‘Toyota RRE160’ is, technically speaking, a BT machine.

What the BT model designation reveals
BT model designations consist of three letters and a number. The first letter indicates the type of machine: L = low-lift pallet truck (Levio series), S = high-lift pallet truck (Staxio), R = reach truck (Reflex), O = order picker (Optio), V = narrow-aisle forklift (Vector). The number following this indicates the load capacity in 100 kg: an LWE200 lifts 2,000 kg, an RRE160 1,600 kg, and an SWE120 1,200 kg. The middle letters describe the operating mode – for example, W for pedestrian-operated trucks and P for trucks with a driver’s platform (LPE, SPE).
| Type | Load capacity | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| LWE140 / LWE160 | 1.4–1.6 t | Unloading lorries, short distances within the warehouse |
| LWE200 / LPE200 | 2.0 t | Pallet transport; LPE with standing platform for longer distances |
| SWE120 / SWE160 | 1.2–1.6 t | Medium-height racking, small warehouses |
| SPE160 / SPE200 | 1.6–2.0 t | High-lift trucks with platform, multi-shift |
| RRE140 / RRE160 | 1.4–1.6 t | BT’s best-selling reach trucks: high-bay |
| RRE200 / RRE250 | 2.0–2.5 t | Heavy pallets, high lift heights |
What we look for in second-hand BT warehouse equipment
Battery: For lead-acid batteries, check the age, charge cycles and capacity; a suitable charger should be included. For high-lift trucks and reach trucks, the battery is the biggest cost factor.
Mast and lift chains: Check for play in the mast profiles, chain elongation and the tightness of the lift cylinders; for reach trucks, check the reach frame and residual load capacity at great heights.
Wheels and drive system: Load and drive wheels wear out quickly in warehouse operations; check their condition and operating noise, and test the drawbar and emergency stop.
Electronics and documentation: Check the operating hours and error codes on the display; ensure you are provided with the maintenance log and the annual inspection report in accordance with DGUV Regulation 68.

Frequently asked questions about BT
Are BT and Toyota part of the same group?
Yes. Toyota Industries acquired BT Industries in 2000. In Europe, Toyota specialises in counterbalanced forklifts, whilst BT focuses on warehouse equipment; service and spare parts are handled through the same network. Second-hand BT equipment is often advertised as “Toyota BT”.
What does RRE160 mean at BT?
R stands for ‘Reach’, i.e. reach trucks (Reflex series), whilst the number 160 denotes a load capacity of 1,600 kg. An RRE140 has a load capacity of 1,400 kg, and an RRE200 2,000 kg.
What is the difference between BT Levio and BT Staxio?
Levio models are low-lift pallet trucks that only lift and transport pallets slightly. Staxio models are high-lift pallet trucks that can also stack pallets onto racks. Both are available as pedestrian-operated and platform-operated models.
Which BT machines are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
The RRE160 and RRE140 reach trucks, the SWE and SPE high-lift trucks, and the LWE200, LWE160 and LPE200 low-lift trucks.
Where is BT warehouse equipment manufactured?
In Mjölby, Sweden, BT’s main factory. Around 90,000 hand pallet trucks and 60,000 electric warehouse handling trucks are produced there each year for the European market.
How many operating hours are acceptable for second-hand BT warehouse equipment?
Provided there is evidence of regular maintenance, even 10,000 hours is not a problem. The key factors are the condition of the battery, the mast and chains, and the wheels – a new or reconditioned battery significantly enhances the value of a unit.
Which pallet truck is suitable for unloading lorries?
For loading bays and short distances, a walk-behind low-lift pallet truck such as the LWE160 or LWE200. For longer distances, choose a truck with a standing platform such as the LPE200.
Can I lease BT warehouse equipment or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can clarify the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
