EP Equipment at a glance
EP Equipment was founded in 2007 in Hangzhou, in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang, and specialises in electric industrial trucks. In 2009, EP established the company Big Lift in Chicago, which took over the US brand Big Joe; to this day, it remains the manufacturer’s North American business. EP entered the European market in 2011 with a branch in Belgium. In 2017, EP began manufacturing its own lithium-ion batteries, followed in 2020 by the EFL302 electric forklift, which the manufacturer explicitly positions as a replacement for diesel and gas forklifts. EP has received Red Dot and iF Design Awards for its equipment, as well as an IFOY Award in 2025.
The parent company, Zhejiang E-P Equipment, is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, employs around 4,600 people and generated a turnover of approximately 7.25 billion yuan in 2025. In the ranking published by the trade journal *Modern Materials Handling*, EP ranked 12th among global forklift manufacturers in 2024, with a turnover of around 900 million US dollars. A key feature is its consistent focus on lithium-ion technology: EP develops and manufactures its own batteries and chargers.

What the EP type designation reveals
EP uses two naming systems. Counterbalanced forklifts with internal combustion engines follow the Chinese standard designation: in the case of the CPCD, the first C stands for forklift, P for counterbalance, the second C for diesel (Q for the petrol or gas version) and D for the hydrodynamic transmission with torque converter. The number indicates the load capacity in 100 kg, and the suffix denotes the series: a CPCD 25 T8 is therefore a 2.5 t diesel forklift from the T8 series. A separate scheme applies to electric models: product family + load capacity + generation. An EFL302 is a second-generation lithium-ion electric forklift with a 3.0 t capacity; an EFL253 is a third-generation model with a 2.5 t capacity; and an EPL154 is a fourth-generation pallet truck with a 1.5 t capacity. The final digit therefore does not represent the load capacity.
| Type | Load capacity | Drive / Design | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| EFL181 | 1.8 t | Electric, 4-wheel, lithium-ion | Warehouse, ramp, production |
| EFL252 / EFL253 | 2.5 t | Electric, 4-wheel drive, lithium-ion | All-rounder for indoor and outdoor use |
| EFL302 / EFL352 | 3.0–3.5 t | Electric, 80 V, pneumatic tyres, IPX4 | Yard and outdoor storage as a replacement for combustion engines |
| CPCD 25 / CPCD 35 | 2.5–3.5 t | Diesel | Yard, building materials trade, building yard |
| CPCD40–CPCD120 | 4–12 t | Diesel | Steel, concrete, heavy-duty |
| EPL154 / EPT12 | 1.2–1.5 t | Electric pallet truck, lithium-ion | Truck unloading, branch, short distances |
| ES12 / ESL122 | 1.2 t | High-lift pallet truck | Stacking up to medium height |
| CQD16 / CQD20 | 1.6–2.0 t | Reach trucks | Rack storage up to approx. 12 m |
What we look for in a used EP
Lithium-ion battery: Many EP electric forklifts run on lithium-ion batteries, whilst older and simpler models also use lead-acid or AGM batteries. Ask for the state of charge, cell voltages and fault log from the battery management system to be read out; ensure you are provided with the correct charger and enquire about the battery’s remaining warranty period.
Engine and cab on diesel forklifts: Check cold start, smoke emissions, oil leaks and the reversing gearbox; note down the engine manufacturer from the engine plate, as different engines are fitted depending on the model series. On machines with a cab, inspect the heating, windows and doors.
Mast, forks and chains: Check for play in the mast profiles, chain elongation, fork wear, side shifters and auxiliary hydraulics. Lifting height, free lift and mast design are specified in the advert.
Spare parts and documentation: Compare the model and serial number on the type plate with those in the advert and clarify how spare parts and servicing are organised in your region. Ensure that the CE marking, declaration of conformity and, for Germany, the annual inspection in accordance with DGUV Regulation 68 are provided.

Frequently asked questions about EP forklifts
Where does EP come from?
EP Equipment was founded in Hangzhou (China) in 2007 and is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. In North America, the manufacturer also operates under the Big Joe brand; in Europe, it has been represented by its own branch since 2011.
What does CPCD mean in relation to EP forklifts?
CPCD is the Chinese standard designation for a diesel counterbalanced forklift with a hydrodynamic transmission. The number following it indicates the load capacity in 100 kg, whilst the suffix – such as T8 or T9 – denotes the model series; a CPCD 35 has a load capacity of 3.5 tonnes.
What does the last digit in EFL302 or EPL154 mean?
It indicates the generation, not the load capacity. The EFL302 is a second-generation electric forklift with a 3.0 t capacity, whilst the EPL154 is a fourth-generation pallet truck with a 1.5 t capacity.
Can an EP electric forklift truck replace a diesel one?
EP has developed the EFL models from 2.5 t upwards for this purpose: 80-volt lithium-ion technology, large pneumatic tyres and IPX4 splash protection for outdoor use. Whether this is sufficient for your own business depends on shift lengths, charging facilities and the terrain.
Which EP machines are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
Electric forklifts from the EFL series, such as the EFL252/253 and EFL302/303, account for the largest share, followed by electric pallet trucks such as the EPL154 and high-lift trucks such as the ES12. Second-hand diesel forklifts from the CPCD series are less common.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand EP forklift?
Many EP machines are still relatively new and have correspondingly few operating hours. More important than the sheer number of hours are the condition of the lithium-ion battery, documented maintenance records and the condition of the mast and chains.
Does EP also manufacture warehouse equipment?
Yes, in fact, that is their main focus: electric pallet trucks, high-lift trucks, reach trucks, order pickers, narrow-aisle trucks, tow tractors and autonomous mobile robots. A large proportion of the current range is fitted with lithium-ion batteries.
Can I lease an EP forklift or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings, you can submit a non-binding enquiry about leasing or hire purchase directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
