Himoinsa at a glance
HIMOINSA is a Spanish manufacturer of diesel and gas-powered generators, as well as lighting masts. The company was founded in 1982 in San Javier, in the Region of Murcia; its international expansion began in the 1990s. Today, the company has around 20 sites across five continents, with manufacturing facilities in Spain, France, China, the USA, Argentina, Brazil and India, as well as branches in Germany, the UK, Poland and Portugal, amongst others. According to the company, it employs more than 1,000 people.
The Japanese Yanmar Group has been a shareholder since 2015. Himoinsa is now part of Yanmar Energy System, Yanmar’s international energy division. This explains why Yanmar diesel engines are predominantly used in Himoinsa’s small and medium-sized generators; beyond that, Himoinsa primarily uses engines from FPT Industrial (Iveco), and Ford engines in gas-powered generators. Generators (alternators) from Mecc Alte or Stamford are used.

What the Himoinsa model designation reveals
The model names follow an easy-to-read pattern. After the ‘H’ for Himoinsa comes a letter denoting the engine manufacturer: ‘Y’ for Yanmar, ‘F’ for FPT (Iveco). The LPG models with Ford engines, on the other hand, are called HRGO. A leading ‘R’ (HRYW, HRFW) indicates the rental version of the HR series for construction sites and events. The number roughly indicates the power class in kVA – an HYW-13 delivers around 12.5 kVA continuous power (PRP), whilst an HFW-60 delivers around 60 kVA. The suffix describes the version: T5 stands for three-phase, M5 for single-phase, in each case for the 50 Hz models; the suffix S5 is found on models with engines compliant with Stage V emissions standards. The key specifications are the PRP (continuous power) and ESP (emergency power) figures on the type plate.
| Model | Data | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| HYW-9 M5 | approx. 7–8 kVA, single-phase, Yanmar | Small consumers, power tools, site huts |
| HYW-13 T5 | 12.5 kVA PRP, three-phase, Yanmar | small construction sites, circular saws, pumps |
| HYW-20 T5 | Power class around 20 kVA, Yanmar | Construction site power supply, small cranes, container facilities |
| HYW-35 T5 / HRYW-35 | Approx. 35 kVA PRP, Yanmar | Construction sites and hire, site heating |
| HYW-45 T5 / HRYW-45 | approx. 43–44 kVA PRP, Yanmar | Larger construction sites, events |
| HFW-60 T5 / HRFW-60 | approx. 60 kVA, FPT Iveco | Tower crane, site power distribution, events |
| HFW-100 T5 | approx. 100 kVA, FPT Iveco | Large construction sites, backup power for businesses |
| HFW-250 T5 | Power rating around 250 kVA, FPT Iveco | Industry, emergency power, large events |
What we look for in a second-hand Himoinsa
Operating hours and maintenance: With a generator, it’s the diesel engine’s operating hours that count. Check the maintenance records for oil, filter and coolant changes, and verify that Yanmar or FPT engines have been serviced regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.
Operating under load rather than idling: A generator that has only been run at idle is prone to deposits building up in the engine. Ideally, test it under load – using a load bank or actual loads – whilst monitoring voltage, frequency and smoke emissions.
Generator and control system: Check the alternator (Mecc Alte or Stamford), terminals, socket panel, residual current and insulation monitoring, as well as the control unit. For emergency power applications, the automatic transfer switch (ATS) must be compatible with the existing system.
Enclosure, fuel tank and chassis: Check the soundproof enclosure for corrosion and ensure the insulation is intact; check the fuel tank for water and diesel sludge; for hire units, check the lifting eye, fork pockets and, where applicable, the road chassis. For use on German construction sites, ensure the unit is supplied with a DGUV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Himoinsa generators
What do HYW and HFW stand for at Himoinsa?
The second letter indicates the engine manufacturer: Y stands for Yanmar, F for FPT (Iveco). The number roughly indicates the power rating in kVA. A HYW-35 is therefore a generator with a Yanmar engine rated at around 35 kVA, whilst an HFW-100 is one with an FPT engine rated at around 100 kVA.
What is the difference between HFW and HRFW?
HRFW models belong to the HR series, which Himoinsa designs for rental companies, events and construction sites. HFW models are part of the industrial range. Technically, both use FPT engines; the equipment and bonnet are tailored to the respective application.
What do T5, M5 and S5 stand for?
T5 denotes three-phase versions, whilst M5 denotes single-phase versions of the 50 Hz models. S5 is found on models whose engine complies with Stage V emissions standards. The exact values for voltage and power are stated in the advert and on the type plate.
Is Himoinsa part of Yanmar?
Yes. Yanmar has held a stake in Himoinsa since 2015; the company, based in San Javier (Murcia), is now part of Yanmar Energy System, the energy division of the Japanese group. This is why many Himoinsa generators are fitted with Yanmar engines.
Which Himoinsa models are most commonly traded second-hand?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the HFW series (such as the HFW-45, HFW-60 and HFW-100) and the HYW series (such as the HYW-13, HYW-20, HYW-35 and HYW-45), as well as the rental models HRFW-60. Spare parts for Yanmar and FPT engines are therefore readily available.
What do PRP and ESP stand for?
PRP (Prime Power) is the continuous power output under varying loads, whilst ESP (Emergency Standby Power) is the higher power output for short-term emergency power supply. For construction sites and the rental market, PRP is the correct benchmark.
Does Himoinsa also manufacture lighting masts and battery storage systems?
Yes. Himoinsa offers LED lighting masts with manual or hydraulic masts, powered by Yanmar engines. In addition, there is the EHR storage system with 30 or 45 kVA, which operates either on its own or as a hybrid with a generator, thereby reducing consumption and emissions.
Can I lease a Himoinsa generator or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their financing partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
