JLG at a glance
JLG Industries was founded in 1969 in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania: John L. Grove – whose initials form the company name – bought a small metal fabrication business with two friends. In 1970, the first JLG aerial work platform rolled off the production line, built by a team of 20 employees; in 1973, the first scissor lift was added, with series production commencing in 1979 at the Bedford (Pennsylvania) plant. In 2003, JLG acquired the SkyTrak and Lull telescopic handler brands; at the end of 2006, the company itself was bought by the US group Oshkosh Corporation, to which it still belongs today. Its headquarters remain in McConnellsburg.
JLG manufactures at several plants in the USA as well as in Leicester (UK), Fauillet (France), León (Mexico) and Tianjin (China), amongst other locations. In 2011, JLG unveiled the 1500SJ, the first telescopic boom lift capable of raising workers to a platform height of 150 feet (around 46 metres). According to the company, JLG has sold more than 400,000 scissor lifts; its range of lifts now spans platform heights from around 20 to 185 feet.

What the JLG model designation reveals
For aerial work platforms, the number roughly indicates the platform height in feet: a 1930ES raises the platform to around 19 feet (just under 6 m), a 450AJ to around 45 feet, and an 860SJ to around 86 feet. The working height is approximately 2 metres higher in each case – which is why European advertisements usually state ‘15.7 m’ for the 450AJ and ‘28.2 m’ for the 860SJ. The letters denote the model type: ES and LE are used for electric scissor lifts, RT for all-terrain scissor lifts, AJ for articulated telescopic platforms, and SJ or S for telescopic platforms. A leading ‘E’ (E300AJP, E450AJ) indicates an electric drive. For telescopic handlers, the first two digits denote the load capacity (40 = 4.0 t), whilst the last two roughly indicate the lifting height in metres.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| 1930ES | Electric scissor lift, approx. 7.7 m working height | Interior fitting, industrial halls, electrical installation |
| 2630ES / 3246ES | Electric scissor lift, working height approx. 9.8 or 11.7 m | Industrial building assembly, ceiling work, drywall installation |
| 4069LE | Wide scissor lift, working height approx. 14.2 m | Installation involving several people and materials |
| E300AJP / E450AJ | Electric articulated platform, working height approx. 11 or 15.5 m | Indoors and outdoors, emission-free, capable of reaching over obstacles |
| 450AJ / 520AJ | Diesel articulated telescopic platform, approx. 15.7 or 18 m | Facades, roofs, off-road construction sites |
| 600S / 660SJ | Telescopic boom lift, approx. 20.4 m and 22.3 m | Steel construction, hall construction, long reach |
| 860SJ | Telescopic platform, approx. 28.2 m | Industry, bridges, high-rise façades |
| 1350SJP | Telescopic platform, approx. 43.3 m | Major projects, power stations, building construction |
What we look for in second-hand JLG equipment
Inspection log and UVV: In Germany, aerial work platforms must be inspected at least once a year by a qualified person in accordance with DGUV regulations. Ask to see the inspection log, the latest inspection sticker, maintenance records and the operating instructions; the CE mark and declaration of conformity are also required.
Battery for electric equipment: For electric scissor lifts and electric articulated platforms, the condition of the batteries and charger determines the ongoing costs. Check the acid level, state of charge after periods of inactivity, and travel and lifting performance under load.
Safety systems: Load moment or basket load monitoring, tilt sensor with alarm, emergency lowering and emergency stop must be in working order. For scissor lifts, check the pothole protection; for articulated and telescopic platforms, check basket levelling and slewing ring play.
Operating hours and hydraulics: Cross-check the hour meter with the year of manufacture and the service log. Check hoses, cylinders and telescopic sliders for leaks and wear; for diesel-powered machines, check cold start and smoke emissions.
JLG in our portfolio: Dealers and stock
Bontebok Trading from the Netherlands and Zoch from Aidenbach manage our JLG stock in roughly equal parts. The focus is on aerial work platforms; in addition, there is a JLG telescopic handler and individual machines in the forklift categories ‘pallet trucks’ and ‘other machinery’. You can find comparable machines under Genie, Haulotte and Skyjack.
Frequently asked questions about JLG aerial work platforms
What do the numbers on JLG aerial work platforms mean?
They roughly indicate the platform height in feet: 1930ES ≈ 19 feet, 450AJ ≈ 45 feet, 860SJ ≈ 86 feet. The working height is around 2 metres above the platform height. The exact figures are listed in the advert.
What is the difference between AJ and SJ models?
AJ models are articulated telescopic platforms: the articulated boom can reach over obstacles such as parapets or pipework. SJ models are telescopic platforms with a straight boom and greater lateral reach.
Which JLG platforms are most commonly traded second-hand?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the 450AJ articulated boom lift, the electric E-models such as the E300AJP and E450AJ, the 1930ES scissor lift, and the 660SJ and 860SJ telescopic boom lifts are among the most common JLG models.
Which group does JLG belong to?
JLG was founded in 1969 in McConnellsburg (Pennsylvania) and has been part of the Oshkosh Corporation since the end of 2006. JLG also owns the SkyTrak and Lull telescopic handler brands.
Does JLG also manufacture telescopic handlers?
Yes. JLG offers telescopic handlers under its own name and under the SkyTrak brand, such as the 3512, 4013 and 4017 models. The first number indicates the load capacity; 40 stands for 4.0 t.
How often must a used aerial work platform be inspected?
In Germany, at least once a year by a qualified person (UVV/DGUV inspection), plus a daily visual and functional check before work begins. Ask to see proof of the last inspection when purchasing.
Which JLG platform is suitable for indoor use?
Electric scissor lifts such as the 1930ES or 2630ES and electric articulating boom lifts such as the E300AJP or E450AJ are emission-free and quiet – suitable for industrial halls, shopping centres and interior fit-out work.
Can I lease a JLG aerial work platform or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings, you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
