Haulotte at a glance
The Haulotte Group is headquartered in L’Horme (France). Its roots go back to two family-run businesses: Pinguely, founded in 1881 by Alexandre Pinguely, and Haulotte, which was established after the First World War by Arthur Haulotte, a native of Belgium. In 1995, the two companies merged to form Pinguely-Haulotte; the aerial work platform business then grew significantly. In 1998, the company was floated on the stock exchange; by 2001, it was manufacturing around 10,000 units per year, and in 2005 it rebranded as the Haulotte Group. In 2008, Bil-Jax, the largest scaffolding manufacturer in the USA, joined the group.
Haulotte is listed on Euronext Paris; the majority shareholder is the Saubot family’s holding company, Solem. In 2023, the group generated a turnover of around 759 million euros and employs approximately 1,700 people. Manufacturing takes place at several plants in France, as well as in Spain, the USA and in Romania near Pitești. Haulotte describes itself as the European market leader in aerial work platforms and is represented by its own subsidiaries in many countries, including Germany.

What the Haulotte model designation reveals
Unlike American manufacturers, Haulotte uses metres for its measurements. The number in the name roughly corresponds to the working height in metres: a Compact 10 reaches around 10 m, an Optimum 8 just under 7.8 m, an HA16 around 16 m, an HT23 around 22.5 m, and a Star 10 around 10 m. The series name indicates the type of machine: Optimum and Compact are scissor lifts for indoor use and construction sites, H…SDX are off-road scissor lifts, HA are articulated telescopic platforms, HT are telescopic platforms, and Star are mast lifts. Among the Compact scissor lifts, the N variants are narrower (around 80 cm instead of 1.17 m), whilst the DX variants are wider (around 1.5 m). Suffixes such as PX, SPX or RTJ describe the model and drive system – if in doubt, check the type plate against the advertisement. For HTL telescopic handlers, the first two digits indicate the load capacity (40 = 4.0 t), whilst the last two roughly indicate the lift height in metres.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| Optimum 8 | Scissor lift, approx. 7.8 m working height, approx. 79 cm wide | Interior fit-out, maintenance, retail |
| Compact 8 / Compact 10 | Scissor lift, working height approx. 8 or 10 m | Industrial buildings, drywall construction, electrical installation |
| Compact 12 / Compact 14 | Scissor lift, approx. 11.8 or 13.8 m | High hall ceilings, racking and ventilation systems |
| H15 SDX / H18 SDX | Off-road scissor lifts, approx. 15 or 18 m, approx. 1.8 m wide | Structural work, cladding, multiple workers with materials |
| HA12 / HA16 | Articulated platform, working height of approx. 12 or 16 m | Facade, roof, reaching over obstacles |
| HA20 / HA26 | Articulated platform, approx. 20 or 26 m | Industry, steel and hall construction |
| HT23 RTJ | Telescopic platform, approx. 22.5 m | Extensive lateral reach in off-road conditions |
| Star 10 | Boom lift, approx. 10 m | Maintenance and installation in narrow aisles |
What we look for in second-hand Haulotte machines
Inspection log and UVV: In Germany, aerial work platforms must be inspected at least once a year by a qualified person in accordance with DGUV regulations. Ask to see the inspection log, inspection sticker, maintenance records and operating instructions; the CE marking and declaration of conformity are also required.
Batteries in electric machines: Many scissor lifts in the Optimum and Compact ranges are electrically powered, as are the electric versions of the HA series. Check the condition and age of the batteries, the acid level, the charger, and the travel and lifting performance after a prolonged period of inactivity – a new set of batteries significantly enhances the value of an older machine.
Safety systems: Test the basket load and load moment monitoring, tilt alarm, pothole protection on scissor lifts, emergency lowering and emergency stop. For HA and HT platforms, check the basket levelling, slewing ring play and boom sliders.
Operating hours and hydraulics: Cross-check the hour meter against the year of manufacture and the service log; check cylinders and hoses for leaks. For diesel off-road machines, check cold start, exhaust smoke and four-wheel drive.

Frequently asked questions about Haulotte aerial work platforms
What does the number on Haulotte aerial work platforms mean?
It roughly corresponds to the working height in metres: Compact 10 ≈ 10 m, Optimum 8 ≈ 7.8 m, HA16 ≈ 16 m, HT23 ≈ 22.5 m. The exact figures are listed in the advert.
What is the difference between Compact and Optimum?
Both are scissor lifts. The Optimum models are the smaller and narrower machines designed for indoor use (Optimum 8: approx. 79 cm wide), whilst the Compact range covers working heights of approx. 8 to 14 m, available as narrow N, standard or wide DX variants.
Which Haulotte platforms are most commonly traded second-hand?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the Optimum 8, Compact 10 and Compact 12 scissor lifts, as well as the HA16 articulated boom lift, are the most common. Consequently, there is a good selection available, and spare parts are readily accessible.
Where is Haulotte based?
Haulotte is based in L’Horme, France. The group was formed in 1995 following the merger of Pinguely (founded in 1881) and Haulotte; it is listed on Euronext Paris and is majority-owned by the Saubot family’s holding company, Solem.
Does Haulotte also manufacture telescopic handlers?
Yes, under the HTL designation, with lifting capacities ranging from around 3.2 to 7.2 t, such as the HTL3510, HTL4014 and HTL4017. The first two digits indicate the lifting capacity; 40 stands for 4.0 t.
How often must a used aerial work platform be inspected?
In Germany, at least once a year by a qualified person (UVV/DGUV inspection), plus a visual and functional check before work begins. Ask to see proof of the last inspection when purchasing.
What is a mast-type platform such as the Star 10 suitable for?
Mast-type aerial work platforms such as the Star series are compact and manoeuvrable. They are suitable for maintenance, assembly and warehouse work in halls and narrow aisles where a scissor lift would be too wide.
Can I lease a Haulotte aerial work platform or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are arranged directly between you and the seller.
