Manitou at a glance

Manitou traces its origins to an idea by Marcel Braud: in 1958, he mentally turned a farm tractor upside down, fitted it with a lifting mast and hydraulic steering – the result was the MC 5, the first all-terrain forklift with a 500 kg load capacity. The name Manitou was coined during a family brainstorming session. The Manitou Group is still headquartered in Ancenis on the Loire. In 1981, Manitou entered the telescopic handler market with the Maniscopic range; in 1984, the company was listed on the Paris Stock Exchange (now Euronext). In 1993, the first aerial work platforms were introduced, along with the MRT 1540, the first rotating telescopic handler, built in Castelfranco Emilia, Italy. Following the acquisition of Gehl in 2008, the Gehl and Mustang brands have also been part of the group. Founder Marcel Braud died in February 2026 at the age of 93.

In 2025, the group generated a turnover of around 2.56 billion euros and employed approximately 6,100 people; sales are conducted through around 800 dealers in 140 countries. Manufacturing takes place in France (Ancenis, Beaupréau-en-Mauges, Poitiers, plus a platform plant in Candé opened in 2022), in Italy (Castelfranco Emilia, Alfonsine, Forlì), in West Bend in the USA and in Greater Noida in India. In 2022, Manitou unveiled its first fully electric telehandler, the MT 625e, followed in 2024 by a new range of scissor lifts for Europe.

What the Manitou model designation reveals

For telescopic loaders, Manitou first specifies the series: MT for rigid construction telescopic loaders, MLT for compact agricultural models, MRT for rotating machines with an upper carriage and outriggers, and MHT for heavy-duty applications. The number that follows represents the lift height in metres plus the lifting capacity in 100 kg: An MT 1840 lifts 4.0 t to around 18 m, an MLT 735 lifts 3.5 t to around 7 m, and an MRT 2150 lifts 5 t to around 21 m. The number after the hyphen usually indicates the engine power in PS (MLT 737-130 PS+: around 130 PS), whilst the suffix denotes the transmission – PS+ stands for a torque converter with Powershift transmission, for example. With all-terrain forklifts, it’s the other way round: the number represents the load capacity in 100 kg, whilst the suffix -4 indicates all-wheel drive. An M 30-4 is therefore a 3 t all-wheel-drive off-road forklift. For aerial work platforms, the number represents the working height in decimetres (160 ATJ ≈ 16 m), where ATJ stands for articulated telescopic and TJ for telescopic.

What we look out for in a used Manitou

Telescopic boom and sliding sections: play in the extended boom, wear on the sliding plates, scoring on the telescopic cylinders and leaks in the tilt and extension cylinders. For MRT models, also check the slewing ring and outriggers.

Load moment limiter and cab: The overload warning must be in working order and must not have been bypassed. Load charts for the forks, bucket and work basket should be supplied with the machine; for MRT models with a basket, ensure the remote control is included.

Drive, axles, transmission: For all-terrain forklifts and MLTs, check the torque converter or hydrostatic drive, axles and tyres. Test smooth acceleration, braking, four-wheel drive engagement and oil levels; the condition of the tyres has a significant impact on running costs for 3–5-tonne machines.

Documents and road registration: Check that the operating hours match the service logbook; compare the type plate with the advertisement; ensure that the inspection log and UVV inspection certificates are provided. For journeys on public roads, check the operating licence or registration documents and the maximum permitted speed.

Manitou at our dealership: Dealership and stock

Zoch in Aidenbach stocks the majority of our Manitou range: all-wheel-drive all-terrain forklifts from the M, MC and MSI series, ranging from 2.5 to 5 t, often new or as good as new, with mast specifications included in the advert. Mecklenburger Landtechnik in Gülzow-Prüzen offers used Manitou machines for farm and agricultural use. You can find comparable machines under Merlo, JCB and Kramer, and aerial work platforms also under Haulotte and Genie.

Frequently asked questions about Manitou

What do MT 1840 or MLT 735 mean in the context of Manitou?

The letters denote the series (MT = construction, MLT = agriculture, MRT = rotating, MHT = heavy-duty), whilst the number indicates the lifting height and load capacity: An MT 1840 lifts 4 t to around 18 m, whilst an MLT 735 lifts 3.5 t to around 7 m. The exact figures are listed in the advert.

What is the difference between MT, MLT and MRT?

MT telescopic handlers are rigid, have high residual load capacities and often feature front stabilisers for construction work. MLT models are more compact and designed for loading work and road travel in agriculture. MRT machines have an upper carriage that rotates through 360 degrees and four outriggers, and often replace a small crane or a work platform.

What is a Manitou all-terrain forklift?

A forklift truck with a lifting mast, large pneumatic tyres and usually four-wheel drive, built for unpaved surfaces on building sites, farmyards and storage yards. Manitou started out with precisely this type of machine, the MC 5 from 1958; today, the M, MC and MSI series are available, with capacities ranging from around 2.5 to 5 tonnes.

Which Manitou models are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?

Among telescopic handlers, the MT 1840 and MT 1440 lead the way, followed by the MLT 735; for all-terrain forklifts, it’s the MC 30-4, M 30-4 and M 50-4. The choice is correspondingly wide, and spare parts are readily available.

Are Gehl and Mustang part of Manitou?

Yes. In 2008, Manitou acquired the US manufacturer Gehl, which also owns the Mustang brand. These names are primarily used for skid-steer loaders; telescopic handlers, all-terrain forklifts and aerial work platforms bear the Manitou name.

Are there any electric Manitou telescopic handlers?

Yes. The MT 625e, the first fully electric Manitou telescopic handler, was launched in 2022; since then, the MT 1840 e has also become available, as well as electric aerial work platforms such as the 180 ATJ e and 200 ATJ e.

How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Manitou?

Provided there is evidence of proper maintenance, 5,000 to 8,000 hours is not a problem for a telescopic handler. More important than the number of hours are play in the telescopic arm, the condition of the axles and gearbox, and a functioning load moment limiter.

Can I lease a Manitou or finance it via hire purchase?

For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
