JCB at a glance
JCB – J.C. Bamford Excavators – was founded on 23 October 1945 by Joseph Cyril Bamford in a garage in Uttoxeter, England; by 1950, the company had moved to nearby Rocester, where its headquarters remain to this day. In 1953, JCB built its first backhoe loader; according to JCB, it produced the first ‘Loadall’ telescopic handler in 1977 and the Fastrac high-speed tractor in 1990. In January 2025, the millionth JCB backhoe loader rolled off the production line. JCB remains family-owned, operates 22 plants across four continents – including in the UK, the USA, France, India, China, Brazil and Germany – and employs around 19,000 people. In 2023, JCB achieved a turnover of 6.5 billion pounds and sold over 123,000 machines.
Technologically, JCB is currently focusing on two areas: the E-TECH electric machines – the 19C-1E is, according to JCB, the industry’s first fully electric mini-excavator (2018), along with the 525-60E electric telescopic handler and the HTD-5E tracked dumper – and its own hydrogen internal combustion engine, which received full EU type-approval in May 2025. The JCB Power Products division manufactures generators.

What the JCB model designation reveals
The best-known is the ‘Loadall’ code: the first digit, 5, stands for the 500 series of telescopic handlers; the following digits represent the lifting capacity in tonnes; and the number after the hyphen indicates the lifting height in metres. A 535-95 therefore lifts 3.5 t to a height of 9.5 m, whilst a 540-140 lifts 4 t to a height of 14 m. For the older mini-excavators in the 80 series, the number roughly indicates the operating weight in 100 kg – an 8018 weighs around 1.8 t. The new mini-excavators state the weight in tonnes plus the model type: C = conventional tail, Z = zero tail (19C-1, 18Z-1). For dumpers, the number represents the payload in tonnes, followed by the tipping type: HT = high-tip, FT = front-tip, ST = swing-tip. For QS generators, the number roughly corresponds to the emergency power output in kVA.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| 3CX | Backhoe loader, 68–100 PS, digging depth up to around 6 m | The most commonly traded JCB model: local authority works, civil engineering, domestic connections |
| 4CX | Backhoe loader with four equally sized wheels, up to 110 PS | larger earthworks, heavy attachments |
| 531-70 | 3.1 t, 7 m | Agriculture, farm, building materials trade |
| 535-95 | 3.5 t, 9.5 m | Construction, roofing, pallets on scaffolding |
| 540-140 / 540-170 | 4 t, 14–17 m | Building construction, assembly |
| 8018 / 19C-1 | approx. 1.8–1.9 t | Gardening and landscaping, domestic connections |
| JS220 | Crawler excavator approx. 22 t | Earthworks, sewer construction |
| 6T-2 | Dumper, 6 t payload | Earthmoving on the construction site |
| G45QS | 41 kVA continuous / 45 kVA emergency power | Site power, containers, events |
What we look for in a second-hand JCB
Telescopic handlers: play in the boom sections and sliding blocks, condition of the hydraulic cylinders, operation of the load moment limiter, axles and brakes. Many Loadalls are used in agriculture – check for rust and feed contamination on the frame.
Backhoe loaders: Bolts and bushings on the rear excavator and front loader, swing mechanism, transmission (powershift or manual) and four-wheel drive; operating hours are often high on the 3CX model, so maintenance history is crucial.
Dumpers and mini-excavators: Articulation joint, tipping cylinder and roll bar on the dumper; undercarriage, tracks and bolt play on the mini-excavator.
Engine and documentation: cold start, smoke emissions, emission standard (Stage V with particulate filter); CE conformity, operator’s manual, service log and UVV inspection; for generators, additionally the DGUV V3 inspection.
JCB at our company: Dealers and stock
Kraus Baumaschinen in Frankenthal and Bontebok Trading in the Netherlands supply the majority of our JCB stock – dumpers, generators, telescopic handlers, mini-excavators and wheel loaders – whilst GSK Baumaschinen in Hanhofen supplements this with individual machines. You can find comparable telescopic handlers under Manitou and Merlo, and mini-excavators under Yanmar and Kubota.
Frequently asked questions about JCB
What does 535-95 mean for JCB telescopic handlers?
The 5 stands for the Loadall 500 series, 35 for a 3.5 t lifting capacity, and 95 for a 9.5 m lifting height. A 540-140 therefore lifts 4 t to a height of 14 m, whilst a 531-70 lifts 3.1 t to a height of 7 m.
Which JCB models are traded second-hand most frequently?
By a long way, it’s the 3CX backhoe loader, followed by the 4CX and the 531-70, 535-95 and 540-140 telehandlers. Consequently, there’s a wide selection available, and spare parts are readily available.
What is the difference between the 3CX and the 4CX?
The 3CX has small front wheels and large rear wheels and is the classic all-rounder. The 4CX has four wheels of the same size, often four-wheel steering and more power – it is more capable off-road and designed for heavier work.
What do C and Z mean on JCB mini-excavators?
C stands for conventional tail, Z for zero tail swing. The number before it indicates the weight in tonnes – a 19C-1 weighs around 1.9 t, a 18Z-1 around 1.7 t. Older models such as the 8018 have the weight in 100 kg included in their name.
Are there any electric JCB machines?
Yes, under the name E-TECH: the 19C-1E mini excavator, the 525-60E telescopic handler – whose battery lasts for a standard shift – and the HTD-5E tracked dumper. In addition, JCB is developing a hydrogen engine, which received EU type-approval in 2025.
Does JCB also manufacture generators?
Yes, through JCB Power Products. The sound-insulated QS range extends from the G20QS to the G220QS; the number roughly corresponds to the emergency power output in kVA. The RS range is available for hire.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand JCB?
Backhoe loaders and telescopic handlers can reach 10,000 hours and more if well maintained. More important than the figure are bolt play, the hydraulics, the transmission and a complete service history.
Can I lease a JCB machine or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
