Kubota at a glance
Kubota was founded in 1890 by Gonshiro Ohde in Osaka – initially as a foundry casting parts for scales; the founder adopted the surname Kubota a few years later. The company’s first own engines followed in 1922, the first tractor (the T15) in 1960, and the first mini-excavator (the KH1) in 1974 – laying the foundation for the construction machinery business. The group is still based in Osaka today; in 2022 it employed around 50,000 people and generated a turnover of approximately 3.19 trillion yen in the 2025 financial year. In addition to agricultural and construction machinery, its product range includes engines, pipes and water technology. Kubota describes itself as the world’s leading brand for small diesel engines; these engines are used in many machines from other manufacturers.
For Europe, the Kubota Baumaschinen GmbH plant in Zweibrücken (Rhineland-Palatinate) is central: Kubota has been manufacturing mini-excavators there since 1989 and wheel loaders since 2014; in 2014, the 100,000th excavator rolled off the production line; capacity stands at over 11,000 machines per year. Tractors from the M7 series have been manufactured in Bierne, northern France, since 2015. In 2012, Kubota acquired a majority stake in the agricultural machinery manufacturer Kverneland, and in 2016 the US manufacturer Great Plains. In Germany, sales of engines, tractors and municipal machinery are based in Rodgau.

KX or U: what the Kubota model designation reveals
Kubota distinguishes between two families of mini-excavators. KX models have a conventional rear end that extends beyond the track width when turning; they are designed for lifting capacity and digging depth. U models are short-tail or zero-tail excavators, whose upper structure remains largely within the tracks when turning – designed for work on walls, in courtyards and on public roads. In today’s models, the number roughly indicates the weight class: a KX019-4 weighs around 1.8 t, a U27-4 around 2.6 t, and a U56-5 around 5.5 t. The suffix after the hyphen (-3, -4, -5) indicates the generation. Older three-digit models such as the KX101 or KX161 do not follow this pattern – in these cases, only the technical data sheet will help. For wheel loaders, R and RT denote the series, whilst for crawler dumpers it is KC.
| Model | Operating weight | Design | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| K008 / U10 | under 1.5 t | Ultra-compact | Indoors, gardens, through doors and gates |
| KX016-4 / KX019-4 | 1.6–1.8 t | Conventional rear | House connections, trenches, car trailers |
| U17 | around 1.7 t | Short rear | Gardening and landscaping in confined spaces |
| KX027-4 / U27-4 | approx. 2.6 t | conventional / short tail | Pipe and sewer construction, driveways |
| U35 / U36-4 | 3.5–3.8 t | Short tail | All-rounder in civil engineering |
| KX057-4 / U55-4 | around 5.5 t | conventional / short-tail | Excavation pits, sewer construction in roadways |
| KX080 / KX085-5 | approx. 8–8.4 t | Midi excavators | Earthworks, heavy attachments |
| R065 / R070 / R090 | approx. 4.4–4.9 t | Wheel loader | Farm, municipal depot, gardening and landscaping |
| KC70 / KC250 | depending on the model | Track dumpers | Material transport off-road and on confined building sites |

What we look out for in a second-hand Kubota
Undercarriage and tracks: Rubber tracks, track rollers, idler wheels and track shoes are the most expensive wear parts on a mini excavator or crawler dumper. Check the condition and tension of the tracks; look out for worn-out track rollers and cracks in the rubber tracks.
Pins, bushings, swivel block: Check for play in the bucket, arm and boom pins, the swivel block and the slewing ring. On the short-tail models of the U-series, hoses run close to the boom – inspect them for signs of chafing and leaks.
Engine and generation: Kubota manufactures the diesel engines in-house. Check the cold start, exhaust smoke and oil tightness, and compare the operating hours with those in the service logbook. The generation suffix (-3, -4, -5) on the type plate determines spare parts availability and emission standard; for engines sold separately, such as the V3800, compare the full model designation with the variant code.
Equipment and documentation: Quick-change couplers, auxiliary hydraulics, bucket sets and dozer blades increase the value. For tractors, the transmission, front loader and PTO are key factors. Ensure you are provided with the CE marking, declaration of conformity and UVV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Kubota
What is the difference between the Kubota KX and U series?
KX mini-excavators have a conventional rear end that protrudes when turning, but in return offer plenty of lifting capacity and digging depth. U mini-excavators are short-tail or zero-tail excavators, whose upper structure remains largely within the track width – the better choice for confined worksites against walls and on roads.
What does the number on Kubota mini-excavators mean?
On current models, it roughly indicates the weight class: KX019-4 ≈ 1.8 t, U27-4 ≈ 2.6 t, U56-5 ≈ 5.5 t. The suffix, such as -4 or -5, indicates the generation. Older models such as the KX101 or KX161 follow a different naming convention; the exact operating weight is specified in the advert.
Which Kubota mini-excavators are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the U55, U35, U27, KX057-4, U17 and KX080 are among the most common Kubota models, followed by the KX016-4, U10, KX027-4 and KX019-4. Spare parts and attachments are therefore readily available.
Where are Kubota mini-excavators manufactured for the European market?
A large proportion come from the Kubota Baumaschinen GmbH plant in Zweibrücken, which has been manufacturing mini-excavators since 1989 and wheel loaders since 2014. There are further mini-excavator plants in Japan and China.
Does Kubota also manufacture tractors and engines?
Yes. Kubota has been manufacturing tractors since 1960 – today’s range extends from the B and L series compact tractors to the M7 with around 170 PS, produced at the Bierne plant in France. Kubota diesel engines are also fitted in many machines from other manufacturers, such as tracked aerial work platforms and mini-dumpers.
Are there electric Kubota mini-excavators?
Kubota has introduced a conversion kit for the KX019-4 and U27-4 models, which allows the machines to be converted from diesel to electric power – and back again. What the dealer offers in each individual case is the deciding factor.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Kubota mini-excavator?
Provided there is evidence of proper maintenance, 3,000 to 5,000 hours is not a problem for a mini excavator. The key factors are the undercarriage, bolt play, hydraulics and engine maintenance – these are often more important than the sheer number of operating hours.
Can I lease a Kubota machine or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
