Kverneland at a glance
Kverneland was founded in 1879 by Ole Gabriel Kverneland in Kvernaland, Norway – as a small smithy that manufactured scythes using water-powered spring hammers. From 1894, the company began manufacturing horse-drawn ploughs and harrows, followed in 1928 by its first tractor plough. Following its first takeover in 1955 and its listing on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 1983, Kverneland expanded through acquisitions to become the Kverneland Group: Taarup in Denmark (mowers, 1993), Maletti in Italy (rotary harrows, 1995), Accord in Soest (seed drills, 1996), the Greenland Group with the Vicon brand and the crop protection specialist RAU (both in 1998). Since 2008, these product lines have been marketed under the Kverneland name. The Group sold its round baler manufacturing business to Kuhn in 2009; since 2010, it has once again been offering balers through its partnership with Gallignani – under the Vicon brand.
Since 2012, the Kverneland Group has been wholly owned by the Japanese Kubota Group. Its headquarters remain in Klepp, Norway; production takes place at ten plants in Norway, Denmark, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Russia and China. At the end of 2025, around 2,360 people were employed by the Group, with approximately 80 per cent of them based outside Norway. In addition to Kverneland, the Group operates the Vicon forage harvesting brand.

What the Kverneland plough designation reveals
On classic mounted reversible ploughs, the first letter indicates the stone protection system: an ‘ES’ model features automatic overload protection with a leaf spring (auto-reset), which automatically returns the body to its working depth after encountering a stone; the structurally identical ‘LS’ model is protected by shear bolts. Following the same pattern, ‘ED’ and ‘LD’ are counterparts. In the new generation, a letter following the number takes on this role: S for stone protection, B for shear bolt – a 3300 S Variomat is therefore a stone-protected four- to six-furrow plough with hydraulic working width adjustment. ‘Variomat’ refers to the continuously adjustable working width (for ES/LS models, approximately 30 to 50 cm per body). Numbers such as 85 or 100 in older model designations (e.g. ‘LB 100’) usually indicate the body spacing in centimetres; the number of furrows is stated in the advert. The semi-mounted ploughs (P… and R…) follow the same principle, with a support wheel for a greater number of furrows.
| Model | Specifications | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| ES / LS | 3–6 furrows, Variomat, Auto-Reset (ES) or shear bolt (LS) | A bestseller for decades, suitable for many soil types and tractor sizes |
| ED / LD | 2–6 furrows, step-by-step width adjustment | lightweight plough with a good stability-to-weight ratio |
| EG / LB | 3–6 furrows, frame 100 × 200 mm or 120 × 200 mm | medium to heavy soils, more powerful tractors |
| 150 S / 150 B | 3–5 furrows, frame 150 × 150 mm | Entry-level series for tractors up to around 150 PS |
| 2300 S / 3300 S | 3–5 or 4–6 furrows, also available as Variomat | New generation, low draught requirements |
| 2500 i-Plough | 4–6 furrows, ISOBUS, up to approx. 280 PS | Adjustment and turning manoeuvre via the tractor terminal |
| LO / 3400 S | 4–7 or 5–7 furrows, on the run or in the furrow | Large tractors with wide tyres, soil-conserving ploughing |
| PG / PW (semi-mounted) | 5–8 or up to 12 furrows | Large farms, contracting firms |
What we look for in a second-hand Kverneland
Wear parts on the plough body: ploughshares, scrapers, mountings and the beak are consumable parts. Check how much material is left and whether the ploughshares have been resharpened or welded on – this will determine the costs for the first season.
Stone protection: On E-models with auto-reset, check the leaf springs for cracks and ensure they reset correctly; on shear-bolt ploughs, inspect the boreholes for wear. A body that is out of alignment indicates a bent beam.
Frame, swivel mechanism and Variomat: Check the frame for cracks and warping; check the swivel cylinder and swivel bearings for play; check the Variomat joints and hydraulic cylinders for leaks. Knock-on tips and the support wheel should also be included in the inspection.
Compatibility with the tractor: the number of furrows, frame clearance and required lifting capacity must be suitable for the tractor. For the 2500 i-Plough, also check that the job computer and ISOBUS functionality are complete.

Frequently asked questions about Kverneland
What is the difference between the Kverneland ES and LS models?
Both are mounted reversible ploughs with 3 to 6 furrows and Variomat cutting width adjustment. The ES has an automatic overload protection system with a leaf spring (auto-reset) for stony soils, whilst the LS is fitted with shear bolts and is suitable for stoneless ground.
What does ‘Variomat’ mean in the context of Kverneland?
Variomat refers to the continuously adjustable working width per plough body, either mechanically or hydraulically – approximately 30 to 50 cm on the ES/LS models. With hydraulic adjustment, the width can be adapted whilst driving to suit the soil, slope and tractor power.
Which Kverneland ploughs are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the ES, LB, EG and LD models, as well as the semi-mounted ploughs PB, PG and PW, are particularly common; the 2300 S and 3300 S are also appearing increasingly frequently. Consequently, ploughshares, skimmers and other wear parts are readily available.
What is the Kverneland 2500 i-Plough?
A mounted reversible plough with 4 to 6 furrows and ISOBUS control for tractors up to around 280 PS. The working width, front furrow and turning sequence are adjusted via the terminal in the tractor. The current model is called the 2501 S Variomat.
Who owns Kverneland?
The Kverneland Group has been wholly owned by the Japanese Kubota Group since 2012. It is headquartered in Klepp, Norway, and manufactures at ten plants across Europe, Russia and China. The Vicon brand also forms part of the group.
What has become of Accord and RAU?
The seed drill manufacturer Accord from Soest (since 1996) and the crop protection specialist RAU (since 1998) are part of the Kverneland Group; their products have been marketed under the Kverneland name since 2008. Older machines often still bear their original names.
Can you plough ‘on-land’ with a Kverneland plough?
Yes, the LO and 3400 S series can be operated either in the furrow or alongside the furrow (on-land). This allows wide tractor tyres to run on unploughed soil, which prevents compaction in the plough pan.
Can I lease a Kverneland implement or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and second-hand – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
