Takeuchi at a glance

Takeuchi Mfg. Co., Ltd. was founded on 21 August 1963 by Akio Takeuchi in Sakaki, in the Japanese prefecture of Nagano, where it remains headquartered to this day. According to the company, in 1971 it developed the world’s first compact excavator with a fully rotatable upper structure, and in 1986 the first compact loader on rubber tracks. Takeuchi is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and achieved record turnover of around 225 billion yen in the financial year ending in February 2026. It has its own sales subsidiaries in, amongst others, the USA (since 1979), the UK (1996), France (2000) and China (2006).

In Germany, Wilhelm Schäfer GmbH of Heppenheim has been distributing the brand since 1985 as the general importer – initially with ten employees, now with more than 100 specialists and its own dealer network; the company is part of the Verhoeven Group. Takeuchi machines have a reputation for being extremely durable: according to the importer, many models achieve more than 12,000 operating hours without any major damage. In addition to mini-excavators, the range also includes compact mobile excavators.

What the Takeuchi model designation reveals

Takeuchi excavators are designated with the abbreviation TB, whilst compact loaders are designated TL. For excavators, the last two digits roughly indicate the weight class: A TB 257 FR weighs around 5.8 t, a TB 280 FR around 8.5 t, a TB 370 W around 7.5 t and a TB 395 W around 10.2 t. The first digit identifies the model family – older machines have TB1xx numbers, current models the TB2xx series or the newer TB3xx series; suffixes such as -2 indicate a revised model version. A ‘W’ stands for a wheeled excavator, whilst ‘FR’ stands for ‘Full Radius’: when turning, the upper structure barely protrudes beyond the undercarriage, and the boom can be offset to the side. ‘e’ denotes an electric excavator, whilst ‘RH’ or ‘SH’ denote the hybrid variants. The exact operating weight is stated in the advert.

What to look out for when buying a used Takeuchi

Undercarriage or axles: On mini-excavators and compact loaders, rubber tracks, track rollers, the idler wheel and the track tensioner are the most expensive wear parts. For the TB295W mobile excavator, check the tyres, axles, oscillating axle lock, brakes and stabilisers or dozer blade instead.

Pins, bushings, articulated boom: Check for play in the bucket, stick and boom pins, and on the slewing ring. For FR models with offset booms and for mobile excavators with adjustable booms, inspect the additional joints and hydraulic cylinders separately.

Engine and hydraulics: Many Takeuchi excavators are fitted with Yanmar diesel engines. Check the cold start, exhaust smoke, oil tightness and smoothness of hydraulic movements under load; for skid-steer loaders, also check the travel drives. Compare the operating hours with those in the maintenance logbook.

Equipment and documentation: Quick-change couplers, auxiliary hydraulic circuits, tiltrotators, bucket sets and, for mobile excavators, road-legal registration significantly increase the value. Ensure you are provided with the CE marking, declaration of conformity and UVV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Takeuchi

Where does Takeuchi come from?

Takeuchi is a Japanese manufacturer based in Sakaki, Nagano Prefecture, founded in 1963 by Akio Takeuchi. In Germany, Wilhelm Schäfer GmbH of Heppenheim has been the general importer since 1985 and manages the dealer network.

What do TB, TL, W and FR stand for at Takeuchi?

TB stands for excavators, TL for track-type compact loaders. W denotes wheeled excavators, whilst FR (‘Full Radius’) refers to excavators whose upper structure barely protrudes beyond the undercarriage when turning. The last two digits roughly indicate the weight class, for example TB 395 W ≈ 10 t.

Which Takeuchi models are most commonly traded second-hand?

Among mini-excavators, the TB216, TB250 and TB230 are among the most common models, followed by the TB260, TB290 and TB235. The TB295W clearly dominates the wheeled excavator market. Spare parts and attachments are correspondingly readily available.

What is the Takeuchi TB295W?

A compact mobile excavator in the approximately 10-tonne class for civil engineering, municipal works, and gardening and landscaping. Amongst used Takeuchi mobile excavators, it is by far the most common model. The current range includes the TB 370 W, weighing around 7.5 tonnes, and the TB 395 W, weighing around 10.2 tonnes.

Does Takeuchi also manufacture skid-steer loaders?

Yes. According to Takeuchi, the company launched its first compact loader on rubber tracks in 1986. The German range currently includes the TL 6 R to TL 12 V2 models, with operating weights of around 3.5 to 5.9 tonnes.

Are there any electric Takeuchi excavators?

Yes, the TB 20e is an electric mini-excavator in the 2-tonne class. There are also hybrid variants such as the TB 210 RH and TB 216 SH.

How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Takeuchi?

Provided there is evidence of proper maintenance, 3,000 to 5,000 hours is not a problem for a mini excavator; Takeuchi machines are considered to be very durable. The key factors are the undercarriage or axles, bolt play and the hydraulics – these are often more important than the sheer number of operating hours.

Can I lease a Takeuchi excavator or finance it via hire purchase?

For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation enquiry about leasing or hire purchase directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
