John Deere at a glance
Deere & Company was founded in 1837 in Grand Detour (Illinois): it was there that the blacksmith John Deere developed the first commercially successful, self-cleaning steel plough. In 1848, the company moved to Moline (Illinois), where it remains headquartered to this day; its shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1918, Deere entered the tractor manufacturing sector with the acquisition of the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company. In the financial year 2025, the group generated a turnover of around 45.7 billion US dollars and employed approximately 73,000 people. In addition to agricultural machinery, the product range includes construction and forestry machinery: the Construction & Forestry division generated revenue of around US$11.4 billion in 2025.
Production in Europe began in 1956 with the takeover of Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim. Today, the 6M and 6R series tractors roll off the production line there; more than two million tractors have been built in Mannheim since 1921. Zweibrücken is the centre of excellence for self-propelled harvesters (T5, T6 and S7 combine harvesters), whilst Bruchsal manufactures cabs and serves as the European spare parts centre. Forestry machinery – harvesters and forwarders from the former Timberjack range – come from Joensuu in Finland. In 2017, Deere acquired the Wirtgen Group from Windhagen, comprising the Wirtgen, Vögele, Hamm, Kleemann and Benninghoven brands; through whose sales network John Deere wheel loaders and motor graders are brought to the European market. Around 7,000 people work for John Deere in Germany, and around 17,000 across Europe.

What the John Deere model designation reveals
For tractors, the first digit indicates the series, whilst the following number roughly indicates the rated power in PS. Until the end of 2021, the model names consisted of four digits followed by a letter – a 6155R is a Series 6 tractor with around 155 PS. Since then, the series has come first: 6R 155, 7R 330, 8R 370. ‘M’ denotes the more basic model, whilst ‘R’ denotes the higher-spec line; ‘RT’ and ‘RX’ are the tracked versions of the larger series. For combine harvesters, W stands for shaker, T for hybrid machines with a tangential threshing mechanism and shakers, and S for rotary combine harvesters. For forestry machinery, harvester models end in 70 (1070, 1270, 1470) and forwarders in 10 (1210, 1510, 1910); the letter following it (D, E, G) indicates the generation – just as with wheel loaders (644K, 744 P-Tier).
| Model | Data | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| 6120M / 6130R | approx. 120–130 PS, 4-cylinder | Grassland, front loader, farmyard work |
| 6155R / 6R 155 | around 155 PS | The most commonly traded John Deere: an all-rounder for forage production and arable farming |
| 6175R / 6R 175 | around 175 PS | Transport, grassland harvesting, medium tillage |
| 7R 330 / 7310R | around 310–330 PS | heavy tillage, slurry tanker, transport |
| 8295R / 8R 370 | approx. 295–370 PS | Large farms, contracting firms, wide implements |
| T660 | Hybrid combine harvester, approx. 360–390 PS | Cereals and rapeseed on medium to large farms |
| 1270G / 1510G | Harvester / forwarder, wheeled undercarriage | Timber harvesting and skidding in thinning and final felling stands |
| 644K / 624K | Medium-sized wheel loaders | Bulk materials, gravel pits, recycling, agriculture |
What we look for in a used John Deere
Transmission and drive: The tractors are available with powershift transmission (PowrQuad, AutoQuad, CommandQuad), continuously variable AutoPowr or eAutoPowr, or DirectDrive. Check the advert to see which variant is fitted, and during the test drive, look out for smooth gear changes under load.
Operating hours and maintenance: The service log, invoices and oil samples show how well the tractor has been looked after. On newer machines, usage data can be tracked via JDLink telematics – ask the dealer about this.
Precision farming: A display (GreenStar or Gen4), StarFire receiver, AutoTrac steering system and enabled features significantly increase the value. Clarify whether licences and correction signals are included in the sale.
Harvesting machinery and forestry: For combine harvesters, check the threshing drum, rotor, shaker and cutting unit; view the engine and drum hours separately. For harvesters and forwarders, check the cutting unit, crane, bogie tracks and frame for cracks.
John Deere at our dealership: Dealers and stock

More John Deere machines are added regularly. You can find comparable agricultural machinery under Fendt, Claas and New Holland.
Frequently asked questions about John Deere
What do 6155R or 6R 155 mean for John Deere?
The 6 stands for the series, 155 roughly for the rated power in PS, and R for the higher-specification trim level. Until the end of 2021, the models had four-digit names (6155R); since then, the series has come first (6R 155). The exact specifications are listed in the advert.
Where are John Deere tractors for Europe manufactured?
The 6M and 6R series are manufactured at the Mannheim plant, which traces its origins back to Heinrich Lanz AG, acquired in 1956. Combine harvesters from the T5, T6 and S7 series come from Zweibrücken, whilst forestry machinery is produced in Joensuu, Finland.
Which John Deere tractor is the most commonly traded second-hand model?
On the major second-hand portals, the 6 Series models lead the way, particularly the 6155R, 6175R and 6R 155, followed by the 6120M, 6130R and 7R 330. Consequently, there is a wide selection available, and spare parts are readily available.
What is the difference between T- and S-series combine harvesters?
The T-series uses a tangential threshing mechanism and shakers, whilst the S-series uses an axial rotor. The W-series was a pure shaker combine harvester. The T660 is one of the most common second-hand John Deere combine harvesters.
Does John Deere also manufacture construction machinery?
Yes. In Europe, the Wirtgen Group – part of John Deere since 2017 – distributes the brand’s wheel loaders (744 and 824) and motor graders. Second-hand wheel loaders such as the 524K, 624K and 644K are particularly common on the market. In addition, there are the road construction brands Wirtgen, Vögele and Hamm.
What do the numbers on John Deere forestry machines mean?
Harvesters end in 70 (1070, 1170, 1270, 1470), whilst forwarders end in 10 (910 to 1910); higher numbers indicate larger machines. The letter (D, E, G) indicates the generation. These machines originate from the former Timberjack range.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand John Deere tractor?
Provided there is a verifiable maintenance history, 6,000 to 10,000 hours is not unusual for Series 6 tractors. More important than the sheer number are the condition of the gearbox, the hydraulics, the front-axle suspension and the cab; a complete service history is worth a great deal.
Can I lease a John Deere or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
