New Holland at a glance

New Holland was founded in 1895 in the town of the same name in Pennsylvania (USA). In 1947, the Sperry Rand Corporation took over the company (Sperry New Holland); in 1964, the Belgian combine harvester manufacturer Claeys was added, whose factory in Zedelgem remains the centre of harvesting technology to this day. In 1975, Sperry New Holland introduced the world’s first twin-rotor combine harvester – a principle that lives on in today’s CR series. In 1986, Ford acquired the company (Ford New Holland); in 1991, Fiat took a 80 per cent stake; and in 1999, New Holland merged with the Case Corporation to form CNH.

Today, New Holland is part of CNH Industrial N.V., headquartered in Amsterdam and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The group also includes CASE (construction machinery), Case IH and Steyr. In 2025, CNH generated a turnover of around 18.1 billion US dollars, of which 12.4 billion came from agricultural machinery and 3.0 billion from construction machinery. The European plants: Zedelgem (Belgium) manufactures CR, CX7 and CX8 combine harvesters, FR forage harvesters and BigBaler square balers; Płock (Poland) produces TC and CX5/CX6 combine harvesters as well as round balers; Basildon (UK) produces medium and large tractors such as the T7; St. Valentin (Austria) produces the T7 Heavy Duty; Jesi (Italy) produces specialised and smaller tractors; and Coex (France) produces grape harvesters. In the construction machinery sector, CNH concentrated its European business on the CASE brand in 2015; since then, New Holland has primarily sold compact loaders and farm machinery through agricultural machinery dealers. New Holland’s previous excavators were produced in collaboration with Kobelco, a partnership that ended in 2017.

What the New Holland model designation reveals

On today’s tractors, the series (T4 to T8) comes before the full stop, followed roughly by the power class in PS: a T7.270 is the large T7, a T6.180 a medium-sized T6. Add-ons such as Auto Command (continuously variable), Dynamic Command or Electro Command describe the transmission. Combine harvesters follow the same pattern: for CR and CX models, the digit before the full stop indicates the size class, whilst the number after it indicates the variant. Older machines have four-digit names without a full stop, such as CR9080 or CX8080. CR stands for twin-rotor combine harvesters, CX for the large ones, and TC for the compact shaker harvesters. For the earlier construction machinery, ‘E’ denotes crawler excavators (the number roughly indicating the weight; for example, E215 refers to the 21-t class), ‘W’ denotes wheel loaders, ‘MH’ denotes mobile excavators, ‘B’ denotes backhoe loaders and ‘L’ denotes skid-steer loaders.

What we look for in a used New Holland

Combine harvesters: Check the engine and drum or rotor hours separately. For CR machines, check the rotors, rotor baskets and friction elements; for CX and TC models, check the shakers, drum and sieves. The cutting unit, feed chute and forage chopper are all part of the inspection; for crawler tracks, check the tracks.

Tractors: Test the transmission (Auto Command, Dynamic Command, older Power Command) under load; check the hydraulics, PTO and front-axle suspension. Precision farming equipment such as the IntelliView display and steering system, including activation functions, increases the value.

Older construction machinery: Many New Holland excavators date from the Kobelco or Fiat-Kobelco era. Check the type plate and serial number against the advert – this also makes it easier to find spare parts. Check the undercarriage, bolt play, slewing ring and hydraulics, as you would with any excavator.

Documents and history: Ask for the service log, invoices, operating hours and, if the machine is road-legal, the vehicle registration documents. For harvesters, ask how many hectares were harvested per season.

Frequently asked questions about New Holland

Does New Holland still manufacture excavators?

In Europe, CNH consolidated its construction machinery under the CASE brand in 2015; the partnership with Kobelco, which manufactured the New Holland excavators, ended in 2017. Second-hand New Holland crawler excavators, mobile excavators and wheel loaders are still available on the market; the serial number on the type plate will help when searching for parts.

What is the difference between the New Holland CR and CX?

CR combine harvesters thresh and separate using two longitudinal rotors (Twin Rotor), whilst CX combine harvesters use a threshing drum and shakers. The CR offers high throughput, whilst the CX is gentler on the straw. Both series are manufactured in Zedelgem, Belgium.

Which New Holland combine harvester is the most commonly traded second-hand model?

On the major second-hand marketplaces, the CR series accounts for a good third of New Holland combine harvesters, particularly the CR9080, CR9090 and CR8.90. These are followed by CX models such as the CX8080 and the compact TC series.

What does T7.270 mean for New Holland?

T7 is the tractor series, whilst 270 roughly indicates the power rating in PS. The suffix, such as Auto Command, refers to the transmission. The T7.270 and T7.210 are among the most common second-hand New Holland tractors.

Are New Holland, Case IH and Steyr part of the same group?

Yes, all three are brands owned by CNH Industrial. They share technology and manufacturing facilities, but operate through their own dealer networks. CASE is the group’s construction machinery brand – not to be confused with the agricultural machinery brand Case IH.

Are there any New Holland tractors with gas engines?

Yes. The T6 and T7 are available as ‘Methane Power’ models for biomethane or natural gas; as early as 2009, New Holland unveiled a hydrogen prototype, the NH2. Gas-powered tractors are still rare on the second-hand market.

How many drum hours are acceptable for a second-hand combine harvester?

That depends heavily on how well it has been maintained. More telling than the number of hours are the condition of the rotors or drum, baskets, cutting mechanism and drive systems, as well as documented workshop invoices. Engine and drum hours are usually listed separately in the advert.

Can I lease a New Holland or finance it via hire purchase?

For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
