CASE at a glance

Jerome Increase Case founded the Racine Threshing Machine Works in Racine, Wisconsin, in 1842 – initially to manufacture threshing machines, and later steam engines as well. CASE set several milestones in the construction machinery sector: in 1957, the Case 320 Construction King – the first factory-integrated backhoe loader – was launched; in 1967, the company entered the excavator market; and in 1969, it introduced its first compact loaders. In 1977, CASE acquired the French excavator manufacturer Poclain, followed by Drott in 1981, thereby entering the mobile excavator market. In 2005, the 500,000th backhoe loader rolled off the production line, and in 2017, the 300,000th skid-steer loader was produced at the Wichita plant.

In 1985, the then owner Tenneco acquired the agricultural machinery division of International Harvester and merged it with Case – this gave rise to Case IH, today’s agricultural machinery brand. In 1999, Case and New Holland merged to form CNH, which has been known as CNH Industrial since 2013. The group, with its registered office in Amsterdam, operates the brands Case IH, New Holland, Steyr, CASE Construction Equipment, New Holland Construction and Eurocomach; in 2025, CNH generated turnover of around 18.1 billion US dollars, of which just under 3 billion came from the construction machinery segment. For the European market, CASE manufactures backhoe loaders, wheel loaders, compact wheel loaders, telescopic handlers and, since 2017, graders at its plant in Lecce (Puglia); from 2024, it will also produce an electric compact wheel loader there; in San Piero in Bagno, mini-excavators ranging from 1 to 6 tonnes and compact loaders are manufactured. Further plants are located in Wichita and Burlington (USA), in Brazil and in India.

What the CASE model designation reveals

For excavators, CX stands for crawler excavators and WX for wheeled excavators. The number roughly indicates the weight class (CX210E around 22 t, CX17D around 1.8 t), whilst the letter following it denotes the generation – B, C, D and, currently, E. SR indicates short-tail machines, whilst EV denotes electric models. Almost all wheel loaders end in ‘21’: the higher the first digit, the larger the machine, ranging from the 521 to the 1121 (plus the 651G since 2024); the letter (C, E, F, G) indicates the generation. For backhoe loaders, the basic models are the 580, 590 and 695; the letters (K, SR, ST, SV) denote the series. In addition to standard steering, the 695SV also offers crab steering and circle steering. For compact loaders, ‘SR’ denotes radial lift kinematics, ‘SV’ denotes vertical lift kinematics, whilst ‘TR’ and ‘TV’ are the tracked versions; for the B models, the number corresponds to the rated load in pounds divided by ten – an SR210B lifts 955 kg, an SV280B 1,270 kg.

What we look out for in a second-hand CASE

Backhoe loaders: check for play in the swing mount, telescopic boom and loading arm; inspect the condition of the powershift transmission and four-wheel drive. For the 695 model, also test all steering modes. Inspect the stabilisers, hydraulic cylinders and quick-change couplers at the front and rear.

Compact loaders: Check the track drive in the frame, the lift arm pins and the quick-change couplers; for tracked compact loaders, check the undercarriage and rubber tracks. Older models such as the 1840 or 410 often see many years of service in farmyards and stables – check the frame and cab for corrosion.

Excavators: Undercarriage, pins and slewing ring as with any tracked excavator; check the generation (B, C, D, E) against the type plate, as engines and hydraulics vary by series. Current E-series excavators use Stage V FPT engines.

Wheel loaders and documentation: Check the transmission, axles and articulation for play; a weighing system and central lubrication increase the value. Ensure you are provided with maintenance records, operating hours, CE marking and UVV inspection certificates.

CASE with us: Dealers and stock

Bontebok Trading from the Netherlands manages our current CASE stock: used skid-steer loaders and excavators, often older, robust machines for farm, construction and track-laying work. New listings are added regularly. You can find comparable machines under our sister brand New Holland, as well as under JCB, Bobcat and Komatsu; see the full stock in the construction machinery category.

Frequently asked questions about CASE construction machinery

Is CASE the same as Case IH?

Both trace their origins back to the J. I. Case Company, founded in 1842, and are now part of CNH, but they are separate brands: CASE Construction Equipment manufactures construction machinery, whilst Case IH produces tractors, combine harvesters and other agricultural machinery. Case IH was formed in 1985 through a merger with the agricultural machinery division of International Harvester.

What do the numbers 580, 590 and 695 mean for CASE backhoe loaders?

These are the three basic types of CASE backhoe loaders, currently available as the 580SV, 590SV and 695SV. The 695SV can also be driven in crab steering mode and with circular steering – which is handy on tight building sites. The letters following the number – such as K, SR, ST or SV – indicate the series.

What do SR, SV, TR and TV mean for CASE skid-steer loaders?

SR models have radial lift kinematics, whilst SV models have vertical lift kinematics – they lift the load more vertically and higher, for example when loading lorries. TR and TV are the corresponding tracked versions. For the B models, the number indicates the rated load in pounds divided by ten.

Which CASE machines are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?

For backhoe loaders, the 580 and 695 are the most common; for wheel loaders, the 721 and 821; and for track excavators, the CX210. Among compact loaders, the older 1840 is one of the most common, along with the SR175, SR210 and SR250. Spare parts are readily available for these models.

What is the CASE 1840?

The 1840 is a compact loader from the Uni-Loader generation, manufactured between 1989 and 2001. It remains one of the most commonly found second-hand CASE compact loaders on the market today and is used in a wide range of applications, such as on farms, at building yards and in gardening and landscaping.

Where are CASE construction machines for the European market manufactured?

Backhoe loaders, wheel loaders, compact wheel loaders, telescopic handlers and graders are manufactured in Lecce, Italy, whilst mini-excavators and compact loaders are produced in San Piero in Bagno. CASE also manufactures skid-steer loaders and tracked skid-steer loaders in Wichita (USA), and backhoe loaders in Burlington (USA).

Which CASE mobile excavators are available?

CASE currently manufactures the E-Series mobile excavators ranging from the WX140E to the WX210E, as well as short-tail versions designated with the suffix ‘SR’. Commonly found on the second-hand market are the WX145, WX200 and WX168, as well as the older 788 P and 988 P models – the latter also available in a dual-mode version for railway construction.

Can I lease a CASE construction machine or finance it through hire purchase?

For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
