Komatsu at a glance
Komatsu was founded on 13 May 1921 by Meitaro Takeuchi in the city of Komatsu in Ishikawa Prefecture; its roots lie in Komatsu Iron Works. The first tractor prototype was built in 1931; from 1949, Komatsu began manufacturing its own diesel engines, and the first machine was exported in 1955. Today, the group is headquartered in Tokyo and generates around 80 per cent of its turnover outside Japan. In the financial year ending 31 March 2026, Komatsu generated revenue of around 4.13 trillion yen; at the end of March 2025, the group employed 66,697 people. Its product range includes construction and mining machinery, forestry machinery, diesel engines and industrial presses.
For Europe, Komatsu Europe International has been managing sales and spare parts from its base in Vilvoorde, near Brussels, since 1973. Manufacturing takes place at three European plants: Komatsu UK in Birtley (northern England, since 1985) produces medium and large crawler excavators ranging from 17 to 70 tonnes, with an annual output of more than 1,100 units. In Hanover, Komatsu gradually took over the long-established Hanomag from 1989 onwards; Hanomag had built its first wheel loader in 1959; the plant has been wholly owned by Komatsu since 2002 and today manufactures wheel loaders ranging from 40 to 262 kW and mobile excavators from 14 to 22 tonnes. Komatsu Italia in Este near Padua (since 1996) supplies over 4,100 mini and midi excavators, backhoe loaders, skid-steer loaders and the PC138US short-tail excavator annually. Mining excavators are manufactured in Düsseldorf, and since the takeover of the Swedish company Partek Forest in 2004, harvesters and forwarders have also been part of the group.

What the Komatsu model designation reveals
The letter combination at the start indicates the machine type: PC stands for hydraulic excavators on tracks, PW for mobile excavators, WA for wheel loaders, D for bulldozers, HM for articulated dumpers and WB for backhoe loaders. The number roughly indicates the weight class: a PC210 weighs around 22 to 24 tonnes, a PC360 around 36 tonnes. This is followed by suffixes for the undercarriage and rear section: LC denotes a long track, NLC a long, narrower track for transport, US a particularly short rear section, and MR – on mini and midi excavators – a tight swing radius with an integrated counterweight. The number after the hyphen indicates the model series: a PC210LC-8 is an older generation than a PC210LC-11 – this suffix is crucial for spare parts, the engine and the emissions standard.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| PC26MR-5 | 2.7–2.85 t, 15.8 kW | Domestic connections, gardening and landscaping |
| PC55MR-5 | 5.3 t, 29.1 kW | Sewer construction, road excavation |
| PC80MR-5 / PC88MR | approx. 8 t, 46.2 kW (PC80MR-5) | Civil engineering in confined spaces |
| PC138US-11 | 14.1–15.8 t, 72.6 kW, short tail | Road and utility works alongside traffic |
| PW148-11 | 14.3–16.6 t, 110 kW | Municipal works, road construction, rapid repositioning |
| PC210LC-11 | 22.1–23.6 t, 123 kW, bucket capacity up to 1.68 m³ | Standard machine for earthworks and civil engineering |
| PC240LC-11 | 25.3–27.5 t, 141 kW | heavy earthworks, demolition, hammer work |
| PC290LC-11 | 30.0–32.3 t, 159 kW | Large-scale earthworks, pipeline construction |
| PC360LC-11 | 35.9–36.9 t, 202 kW, bucket up to 2.66 m³ | Mining, quarrying, large-scale construction sites |

What we look for in a used Komatsu
Undercarriage: Track links, pins, bushings, idler and carrier rollers, guide wheel and track rollers account for a large proportion of repair costs on crawler excavators. Measure the degree of wear on the track and check whether the undercarriage is LC or NLC – this affects stability and transport width.
Boom, stick and slewing ring: Check for play in the bucket, stick and boom pins; look for cracks or weld seams on the boom and stick; and check for play in the slewing ring. Inspect machines with a hammer line and those used extensively for demolition work particularly closely.
Engine, hydraulics and model year: Komatsu manufactures its own engines. Check for cold start, smoke emissions, blow-by, smooth hydraulic movements under load and the fault log on the monitor. Compare the generation suffix (-8, -10, -11) with the type plate and the advertisement; for Stage V machines, include the exhaust after-treatment system in the inspection.
Equipment and documentation: Quick-change couplers, auxiliary hydraulics, hammer and shear lines, bucket packages and tiltrotators significantly increase the value. Ensure you are provided with maintenance records, operating hours, CE marking and UVV inspection certificates.

Frequently asked questions about Komatsu construction machinery
What does PC210LC-11 mean for Komatsu?
PC stands for hydraulic excavator on tracks, 210 for the weight class of around 22 tonnes, LC for the long track assembly and -11 for the model year. A PC210LC-8 is therefore the same basic model, but an older generation with a different engine and different spare parts.
Which Komatsu machines are most commonly traded second-hand?
Among track excavators, the PC210 and PC200 lead the way, followed by the PC240, PC360, PC138 and PC290. For wheel loaders, the most common models are the WA470, WA380 and WA320, whilst for mobile excavators they are the PW148, PW160 and PW180. Spare parts and attachments are correspondingly readily available.
What is the difference between PC, PW, US and MR?
PC machines run on tracks, whilst PW machines run on wheels. ‘US’ denotes tracked excavators with a particularly short rear section, such as the PC138US or PC228US, whilst ‘MR’ denotes mini and midi excavators with a tight swing radius. Both variants are designed for work alongside roads, next to walls and in city centres.
Where are Komatsu machines for the European market manufactured?
Medium and large crawler excavators are manufactured in Birtley, England; wheel loaders and mobile excavators in Hanover; and mini and midi excavators, backhoe loaders and skid-steer loaders in Este, Italy. Other models are manufactured at other group plants; spare parts are distributed from the central warehouse in Vilvoorde, near Brussels.
What is Komatsu’s connection with Hanomag?
Komatsu acquired a stake in the Hanover-based manufacturer Hanomag in 1989 – a company that had been building wheel loaders since 1959 – and took full control of it by 2002. The Hanover plant now belongs to Komatsu Germany and manufactures Komatsu wheel loaders and mobile excavators.
Does Komatsu also manufacture forestry machinery and forklift trucks?
Yes. Since the takeover of the Swedish company Partek Forest in 2004, harvesters and forwarders have been part of the group under the name Komatsu Forest. Komatsu also manufactures forklift trucks, such as electric forklifts from the FB series and diesel forklifts from the FD series.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Komatsu excavator?
There is no fixed limit. Komatsu excavators are designed for long service life; the key factors are regular maintenance, the condition of the undercarriage, bolts and hydraulics, and the nature of the work. A machine used in earthworks is usually in better condition than one used in demolition, even with the same number of operating hours.
Can I lease a Komatsu excavator or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
