Develon at a glance
Develon’s roots date back to 1937, when Chosun Machine Works was founded in Korea. This evolved into Daewoo Heavy Industries in 1976; in 1977, a dedicated construction machinery division was established; the first excavator was delivered in 1978, followed in 1985 by the company’s own Solar excavator range. In 1990, the company established a European subsidiary in Belgium, and in 1992, wheel loaders were added to the range. In 2005, the Doosan Group took over the division as Doosan Infracore and introduced the DX (excavators) and DL (wheel loaders) series. In 2008, Doosan acquired the Norwegian dumper manufacturer Moxy.
In 2021, the HD-Hyundai Group acquired the company, which has since operated under the name HD Hyundai Infracore. On 20 March 2023, the new brand DEVELON was launched – a portmanteau of ‘Develop’ and ‘Onwards’. Today, Develon is a brand of HD Construction Equipment, a company within the HD Hyundai Group. Bobcat is not part of this: the compact machinery brand remained with Doosan following the sale in 2021. In Europe, Develon manufactures at its site in Elnesvågen, Norway; it has sales offices in Prague and Groot-Ammers, amongst other locations, and spare parts centres in Halle (Germany), Cardiff and, since 2025, in Belgium.

What the Develon model designation reveals
The letters at the beginning indicate the machine type: DX stands for excavators, DL for wheel loaders, DA for articulated dumpers and DD for bulldozers. For excavators, the number roughly indicates the weight class – a DX140LC-7 weighs 14.4 t, a DX235LC-7 around 23 t. LC stands for long track, NLC for a narrower track, and W for a wheeled excavator. For mini-excavators, ‘Z’ denotes a zero-tail design (the upper structure remains within the slewing circle when turning), whilst ‘R’ usually indicates a shortened tail. For wheel loaders, the number roughly corresponds to the bucket capacity: the DL250-7 has a 2.5 m³ bucket, the DL420-7 a 4.5 m³ bucket. The suffix after the hyphen indicates the generation: -3 and -5 date from the Doosan era, -7 is the current Stage V generation, and -9 is the latest generation of excavators. Even older excavators bear the name ‘Solar’ from the Daewoo era.

What we look for in a used Develon
Doosan or Develon: Many used machines still bear the Doosan logo – technically, they are from the same manufacturer. The key factor is the generation indicated on the type plate: a -5 machine has different engines and exhaust systems to a -7 machine. Check the serial number, year of manufacture and operating hours against the advert.
Undercarriage, pins, slewing ring: tracks, track rollers and idler rollers, guide wheel and turret, plus play in the bucket, stick and boom pins and in the slewing ring. On short-tail and zero-tail excavators (R, Z), check the tightly routed hoses on the swing bracket and boom for signs of chafing.
Engine and hydraulics: Develon manufactures its own diesel engines, such as the D34 in the DX140LCR-7 or the D24 in the DX62R-7. Check for cold starts, smoke emissions, oil leaks and smooth operation under load; for mobile excavators, also check the axles, transmission and brakes.
Equipment and documentation: Quick-change couplers, auxiliary hydraulics, hammer lines, bucket packages and tiltrotators significantly increase the value. Ensure you are provided with the CE marking, declaration of conformity, maintenance records and UVV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Develon
Is Develon the same as Doosan?
Yes, as far as construction machinery is concerned. Since March 2023, Develon has been the brand name of Doosan’s former construction machinery division, which became part of the HD-Hyundai Group in 2021. The DX and DL series continue under the new name; a Doosan DX140LC and a Develon DX140LC belong to the same model family.
Is Bobcat part of Develon?
No. Bobcat was acquired by Doosan in 2007 and remained with Doosan when the construction machinery division was sold in 2021. Develon and Bobcat are now separate companies.
What do DX, DL and DA stand for?
DX stands for excavators, DL for wheel loaders, DA for articulated dumpers and DD for bulldozers. For excavators, the number indicates the weight class; for wheel loaders, it roughly indicates the bucket capacity; LC, W, Z or R describe the undercarriage, chassis and rear end, whilst the suffix -5, -7 or -9 indicates the generation.
Which Develon and Doosan machines are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
For crawler excavators, the DX140, DX235, DX225 and DX255 lead the way; for wheeled excavators, the DX160W, DX165W and DX170W. For wheel loaders, the main models are the DL300, DL250 and DL420, whilst for mini-excavators they are the DX17Z and DX27Z. Spare parts and attachments are readily available for these models.
What is the Develon 9 Series?
The latest generation of crawler excavators, comprising the DX230LC-9, DX260LC-9, DX360LC-9 and DX400HD-9. Develon claims up to 20 per cent more engine power and around 8 per cent lower fuel costs compared to the previous generation, as well as a 360-degree camera, radar-based pedestrian detection, a weighing system and 1,000-hour service intervals.
Are there any electric Develon mini-excavators?
Yes. With the DX23E-7 (around 2.3 t), Develon offers a zero-emission mini-excavator – ideal for city centres, indoor workspaces and noise-sensitive construction sites.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Develon excavator?
There is no fixed limit. The key factors are consistent maintenance, the condition of the undercarriage, bolts and hydraulics, and the nature of the work. Recent machines from the -7 generation with just a few hundred hours on the clock are often a viable alternative to a new machine.
Can I lease a Develon excavator or finance it via hire purchase?
