Hitachi Construction Machinery at a glance
Hitachi’s construction machinery traces its origins back to Hitachi Ltd.: in 1949, the company produced the U05 cable-operated bucket excavator, the first excavator based entirely on Japanese technology; in 1965, the UH03 became the first hydraulic excavator manufactured without a foreign licence. On 1 October 1970, Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., based in Tokyo, was founded through the merger of two group companies. The European subsidiary has been based in the Netherlands since 1972, and Hitachi has been manufacturing at its Amsterdam plant since 2002. In 2000, the ZAXIS series was launched – according to the manufacturer, the world’s first hydraulic excavators featuring satellite communication for remote diagnostics.
In 2022, Hitachi Ltd. sold a large portion of its majority stake to the Japanese trading house Itochu; in the same year, the partnership with Deere & Company in America came to an end. In the financial year ending in March 2026, the group generated turnover of around 1.41 trillion yen and employed just over 25,000 people. The group also includes the Australian mining supplier Bradken and the US parts supplier H-E Parts. Important for buyers: from April 2027, the company will be known as LANDCROS; used machinery will continue to bear the Hitachi logo.

What the Hitachi model designation reveals
ZX stands for the ZAXIS excavators, which have replaced the older EX series since 2000; today, only the large mining excavators are still designated EX. Wheel loaders bear the abbreviation ZW. The number roughly indicates the weight class: a ZX33U weighs around 3.5 t, a ZX210 around 22 t, and a ZX350 around 35 t. The suffix after the hyphen indicates the generation – for mini-excavators, the current generation is -6; for medium-sized excavators, it is -7; older machines are designated -3 or -5. The letters in between describe the model type, usually as follows: U or US for a short rear end with a small swing radius, B for a dozer blade, LC for a long undercarriage, W for wheeled excavators and EB for battery-electric models. A ZX160LC-6 is therefore a 16-tonne-class crawler excavator with a long undercarriage from the 6th generation.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| ZX19-6 / ZX19U-6 | Mini excavator, 1.9 t | Domestic connections, gardening and landscaping |
| ZX33U-6 | Short-tail mini excavator, 3.5 t | Pipe and sewer works, driveways |
| ZX55U / ZX65USB | Mini excavators, 4.9–6.1 t | Excavation pits, sewer construction on public roads |
| ZX130 / ZX135US | Crawler excavators, 13.8–15.4 t (7th generation) | Civil engineering, road construction, short tail for confined spaces |
| ZX160LC / ZX180 | Crawler excavators, 17.7–18.9 t (Generation 7) | Earthworks, pipeline construction |
| ZX210 / ZX225US | Crawler excavators, 21.9–24.8 t | All-rounders for earthworks and civil engineering |
| ZX250 / ZX300 | Crawler excavators, 26.5–30.4 t | Excavation pits, bulk excavation |
| ZX350LC | Crawler excavator, approx. 35 t | Mass excavation, quarrying, demolition |
| ZX140W / ZX180W | Mobile excavators, approx. 14.5–18 t | Sewer construction, local authorities, road transport |
| ZW180 / ZW250 | Wheel loaders, 15–20.4 t (Generation 7) | Gravel, recycling, material handling |

What we look for in a used Hitachi
Undercarriage: Track links, track shoes, drive and idler rollers, guide wheel and track rollers are the most expensive wear parts on crawler excavators. Check for track sag and wear on the pins; LC undercarriages are longer and therefore slightly more expensive to replace when in the same condition.
Hydraulics and engine: Smooth movement under load, leaks from cylinders and rotary joints, cold start and exhaust smoke. For Generation -6 and -7 machines, ask to see proof of maintenance for the particulate filter and AdBlue system.
Pins, bushings, slewing ring: Check for play in the boom, stick and bucket pins, slewing ring and swing gearbox. On short-tail models (US), inspect the hoses at the rear and on the boom for signs of chafing.
Generation and documentation: A ZX210-3 and a ZX210-7 differ significantly in terms of engine, emissions standard and electronics. Check the generation on the type plate against the advert, compare the operating hours with the service logbook, and ensure you are provided with the CE Declaration of Conformity and the UVV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Hitachi excavators
What do ZX, U, US and LC mean for Hitachi?
ZX stands for the ZAXIS excavators; the number roughly indicates the weight class. U and US usually denote a short tail, B a dozer blade, LC a long undercarriage, and W the wheeled version. The suffix -6 or -7 indicates the generation. A ZX350LC-7 is therefore a 35-t class crawler excavator with a long undercarriage.
Why is Hitachi soon to be called LANDCROS?
Hitachi Construction Machinery will change its name to LANDCROS in April 2027. The manufacturer cites the shift towards connected, autonomous and sustainable solutions as the reason for the move; since the partial sale in 2022, Hitachi Ltd. has held only a minority stake. Please check with your dealer regarding service and parts supply for older machines.
Which Hitachi excavators are the most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
On the major second-hand portals, the ZX350 and ZX210 crawler excavators lead the way, followed by the ZX250 and ZX130. Among mobile excavators, the ZX140W is common, whilst among wheel loaders, the ZW250 and ZW180 are the most common. Spare parts and wear parts are therefore readily available.
Does Hitachi have any connection with John Deere?
In North, Central and South America, Hitachi worked for many years in a joint venture with Deere & Company. This partnership was dissolved in 2022, and since then Hitachi has been selling its machines there directly. In Europe, Hitachi markets its machines through its own European subsidiary and its network of dealers.
Where are Hitachi excavators for the European market manufactured?
Hitachi manufactures primarily in Japan and, since 2002, also at its Amsterdam plant in the Netherlands. The European sales company has been based in the Netherlands since 1972.
Are there electric Hitachi excavators?
Yes. In Europe, Hitachi offers battery-powered excavators: the ZX55U-6EB mini excavator weighing around 5.3 t, the ZX85-6EB weighing around 8.8 t, and the ZX135-7EB crawler excavator weighing between 14.6 and 16.9 t.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Hitachi excavator?
Provided there is a record of maintenance, 3,000 to 5,000 hours for a mini-excavator and 8,000 to 12,000 hours for a crawler excavator in the 20–35 t class are not grounds for rejection. The key factors are the undercarriage, bolt play, hydraulics and engine.
Can I lease a Hitachi excavator or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
