This page features construction machinery from Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE). You can find Volvo lorries under ‘Tractor units’ and ‘Lorries over 7.5 t’; Volvo CE has no connection with the passenger cars produced by Volvo Cars.
Volvo Construction Equipment at a glance
Volvo CE’s roots lie in Eskilstuna, Sweden: in 1832, Johan Theofron Munktell founded a machine workshop there on behalf of the town, which, via Bolinder-Munktell and Volvo BM, evolved into today’s construction machinery manufacturer. In 1954, the H10 became the first wheel loader, and in 1966, the ‘Gravel Charlie’ became the world’s first mass-produced articulated dumper. Excavators were added to the range in 1991 following the takeover of the Swedish manufacturer Åkerman, and in 1998 the construction machinery division of Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea was acquired. In 2020, Volvo CE launched its first series-production electric machines, the ECR25 Electric and the L25 Electric; in 2023, the group’s headquarters moved back to Eskilstuna.
Volvo CE is a business division of the publicly listed Volvo Group (AB Volvo), which also includes Volvo Trucks, and generated a turnover of around 81.6 billion Swedish kronor in 2025. The product range has recently been streamlined: in 2024, the road paver business (ABG) was sold to Ammann; in 2025, the Chinese brand SDLG was divested; and in 2026, Volvo CE announced the end of the Rokbak dumper range. In Germany, Volvo CE operates the Konz plant near Trier, where mobile excavators and compact wheel loaders are manufactured by a workforce of around 900.

EC, ECR or EW: what the Volvo model designations reveal
For excavators, EC stands for crawler excavator (Excavator Crawler), whilst EW stands for wheeled excavator (Excavator Wheeled). An additional ‘R’ – ECR or EWR – denotes the short-tail version with a small swing radius for confined construction sites on public roads. The number roughly indicates the weight class: an EC220 weighs around 22 t, an ECR25 around 2.5 t, and an EW160 around 16 to 18 t. The letter at the end (B, C, D, E, F) indicates the model generation; for wheel loaders, the current generation is the H series. Wheel loaders are designated L, with the number increasing with size and weight. For articulated dumpers (A), the number roughly corresponds to the payload in tonnes – the A30 Electric carries 29 t, the A40 Electric 39 t. Suffixes such as L or LC on excavators indicate a long undercarriage.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| ECR25 | Short-tail mini-excavator, 2.5–3.0 t | Domestic connections, gardening and landscaping |
| EC27 | Mini excavator, approx. 2.7 t | Utility line installation, driveways |
| ECR88 | Short-tail compact excavator, 8.6–10 t | Urban sewer and road construction |
| EC210 / EC220 | 20-tonne class crawler excavators | All-rounders for earthworks and civil engineering |
| EC250 / EC300 | 25–30-tonne class crawler excavators | Excavation pits, bulk excavation |
| ECR235 | Short-tail crawler excavators in the 23-tonne class | Road construction alongside traffic |
| EW160 | Mobile excavator, 16.2–18.2 t (EW160E) | Sewer works, local authorities, road transport |
| L60 / L90 / L120 | Wheel loaders, 11–21.6 t (H Series) | Gravel, recycling, timber, agriculture |
| A25 / A30 / A40 | Articulated dumpers, payload approx. 24–39 t | Earthworks, quarrying |

What we look out for in a used Volvo
Undercarriage and tracks: For tracked and mini excavators, check the condition of the tracks, track rollers, idler wheel and track tensioner; for wheeled excavators, check the axles, oscillating axle lock, brakes and tyres. Short-tail models (ECR, EWR) have confined spaces – check the hoses at the rear and on the swing bracket for signs of chafing.
Generation and emissions standard: An EC210B and an EC220E are separated by several model generations, engines and emissions standards. Compare the generation letter on the type plate with the one in the advert; for newer machines, ask for proof of maintenance carried out on the particulate filter and AdBlue system.
Wheel loaders and dumpers: The articulated joint, axles, transmission and brakes are the key components. Check gear-shift behaviour under load, play in the articulated joint and the lifting frame; for dumpers, also inspect the tipping body and suspension.
Equipment and documentation: Quick-change couplers, tiltrotators, auxiliary hydraulics and bucket packages significantly increase the value. Check the operating hours against the service log and ensure you are provided with the CE Declaration of Conformity and the UVV inspection report.

Frequently asked questions about Volvo construction machinery
What is the difference between Volvo EC and ECR models?
EC excavators have a conventional rear end, whilst ECR excavators have a short rear end with a small swing radius. ECR models are suitable for confined construction sites against walls and alongside traffic; EC models are usually slightly more stable for the same size. EW and EWR are the corresponding wheeled excavators.
What do the letters at the end mean, for example in the EC220E?
The letter indicates the model generation: B, C, D, E and F follow on from one another. An EC210B and an EC220E are technically different machines with different engines and emission standards. For spare parts and maintenance, the exact designation on the type plate is what counts.
Which Volvo construction machines are most commonly traded second-hand?
On the major second-hand portals, the EC210 and EC220 crawler excavators, the L120 wheel loader, the EW160 wheeled excavator, the EC250 crawler excavator and the ECR88 compact excavator are among the most common models. Spare parts and attachments are therefore readily available.
Are Volvo CE and Volvo Trucks the same company?
Both are part of the Volvo Group (AB Volvo), headquartered in Gothenburg, but operate as separate business divisions. Volvo CE manufactures excavators, wheel loaders and dumpers, whilst Volvo Trucks manufactures lorries and tractor units. The passenger car brand Volvo Cars is an independent company.
Are there electric Volvo construction machines?
Yes. Volvo CE has been offering electric machines since 2020, starting with the ECR25 Electric mini-excavator and the L25 Electric wheel loader. Today, the range extends from the ECR18 Electric through the L90 and L120 Electric wheel loaders to the EC230 Electric crawler excavator and the A30 and A40 Electric dumpers.
Does Volvo still manufacture pavers and tippers?
No. The paver business (ABG) was sold to Ammann in 2024, and production of the rigid Rokbak dump trucks (formerly Terex Trucks) is being discontinued. Second-hand machines from these ranges are still available on the market; it is best to check the availability of spare parts with the dealer in advance.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Volvo excavator?
Provided there is evidence of regular maintenance, 3,000 to 5,000 hours for a mini-excavator and 8,000 to 12,000 hours for a 20-tonne crawler excavator are not grounds for rejection. The key factors are the undercarriage, bolt play, hydraulics and engine – these are often more important than the sheer number of operating hours.
Can I lease a Volvo construction machine or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can clarify the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
