Liebherr at a glance
Hans Liebherr founded Hans Liebherr Maschinenfabrik in Kirchdorf an der Iller (Upper Swabia) in 1949. The first product was the TK 10 mobile tower crane, which could be transported and erected quickly. In 1954, the L 300 – Europe’s first hydraulic excavator – went into series production. This was followed by factories abroad and new business divisions: in 1960, the first Austrian factory in Bischofshofen, now the group’s centre of excellence for wheel loaders; in 1961, the plant in Colmar, Alsace, where Liebherr continues to manufacture crawler excavators to this day; in 1969, the Ehingen plant for mobile and crawler cranes. Mobile excavators and material-handling machines continue to be manufactured at the company’s founding site in Kirchdorf.
The group is wholly owned by the Liebherr family; the parent company is Liebherr-International AG in Bulle (Switzerland). The group comprises more than 130 companies. In 2025, Liebherr generated a turnover of around 14.8 billion euros and employed just under 56,000 people. Of this, around 9.3 billion euros was attributable to construction machinery and mining – earthmoving, material handling, specialist civil engineering, mobile and tower cranes, and concrete technology. Added to this are marine cranes, aviation and transport technology, components and domestic appliances.

What the Liebherr model designation reveals
The letters indicate the machine type: R stands for crawler excavators, A for wheeled excavators, LH for material handlers, L for wheel loaders, PR for bulldozers, TA for articulated dumpers, LTM for mobile cranes and LRS for reach stackers. Be careful with LR: This is the name used for both crawler loaders (e.g. LR 631) and crawler cranes (four-digit models, e.g. LR 1300). For excavators, the last two digits roughly indicate the weight class – an R 926 weighs around 26 to 36 t depending on its equipment, whilst mobile excavators range from the A 909 Compact at around 10 t up to the 27 t class. Older excavators also feature generation letters (B, C) or the suffix ‘Litronic’, whilst current crawler excavators bear the designation ‘Generation 8’. For wheel loaders, the number increases with size; the L 550 to L 586 are the XPower models with a power-split drive system. For mobile cranes, the number following the ‘1’ indicates the maximum lifting capacity in tonnes, and the digit after the hyphen indicates the number of axles: an LTM 1090-4.2 can lift up to 90 t and has four axles.
| Type | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| R 924 / R 926 | Crawler excavator, R 926: 26–36 t, 150 kW | Earthworks, excavation pits, sewer construction |
| R 944 | Large crawler excavator (predecessor to the 8th generation) | Mass excavation, quarrying, demolition |
| A 900 / A 904 | Older-generation mobile excavators | Road and sewer construction, local authorities |
| A 914 / A 918 | Mid-range mobile excavators | Urban civil engineering, tiltrotator applications |
| L 507 / L 509 Stereo | Stereo loaders, tipping load 3.75–6.55 t (L 507–L 518) | Municipal depots, winter maintenance, gardening and landscaping |
| L 550 / L 556 | L 550 XPower: 18.6–20.6 t, 163 kW | Gravel, recycling, timber |
| L 566 / L 580 | Large wheel loaders, now known as XPower | Gravel plant, quarry, handling |
| LTM 1090-4.2 | Mobile crane, 90 t, 4 axles, 60 m telescopic boom | Crane hire, assembly |
| LRS 545 | Reach stacker, 27–35 t in second row | Container terminal, intermodal, timber handling |

What we look for in a used Liebherr
Drive system on wheel loaders: Smaller and medium-sized Liebherr wheel loaders feature a hydrostatic drive, whilst the XPower models combine a hydrostatic drive with a continuously variable mechanical drive. Check for smooth acceleration, braking performance and leaks from pumps and engines; on articulated loaders, also check the articulation joint and steered rear axle.
Undercarriage, pins and slewing ring on excavators: track links, idler rollers and track shoes on crawler excavators; axles, oscillating axle lock and tyres on wheeled excavators. Check for play in the boom, stick and bucket pins and on the slewing ring; a quick-change coupler or tiltrotator increases the value.
Generation and electronics: There are often several generations within the same basic model – an A 904 from the 1990s and an A 918 from the current range have little in common. Check the year of manufacture, serial number and Litronic control system against the advert, and have the fault memory read out.
Cranes and reach stackers: Here, the crane logbook or inspection log, periodic inspections, the condition of the telescopic boom, cables and spreaders, as well as the operating hours of the upper and lower carriages are important. For mobile cranes, also check the axles, suspension and registration documents.

Frequently asked questions about Liebherr construction machinery
What do R, A and L stand for at Liebherr?
R stands for crawler excavators, A for wheeled excavators, and L for wheel loaders. In addition, LH stands for material handlers, PR for bulldozers, LTM for mobile cranes and LRS for reachstackers. For excavators, the last two digits roughly indicate the weight class; for example, the R 926 is in the class starting at around 26 tonnes.
What is a Liebherr stereo loader?
The compact wheel loaders L 507 to L 518 combine articulated steering with a steered rear axle. According to Liebherr, this results in a turning circle that is around 20 per cent smaller than that of comparable wheel loaders, and the machine remains stable when turning – a feature popular with building yards and winter maintenance services.
What does XPower mean in Liebherr wheel loaders?
XPower is the power-split drive system used in the large L 550 to L 586 wheel loaders. It combines hydrostatic and mechanical drive and adjusts the ratio continuously: hydrostatic for short loading cycles, mechanical for long distances and gradients.
Which Liebherr machines are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
On the major second-hand portals, the L 566, L 580 and L 556 wheel loaders, the R 926, R 924 and R 944 crawler excavators, and the A 900, A 914 and A 918 are among the most common models. As for cranes, the most popular are the LTM mobile cranes in the 30 to 100 t classes.
Where are Liebherr construction machines manufactured?
Crawler excavators are manufactured in Colmar (France), mobile excavators and material handlers in Kirchdorf an der Iller, wheel loaders in Bischofshofen (Austria), and mobile and crawler cranes in Ehingen. Bulldozers, loader tractors and telescopic handlers are also manufactured in Austria.
Who owns Liebherr?
The group remains entirely family-owned to this day. The parent company is Liebherr-International AG in Bulle, Switzerland; the group comprises more than 130 companies and generated a turnover of around 14.8 billion euros in 2025.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Liebherr?
Provided there is evidence of proper maintenance, 8,000 to 12,000 hours are not considered a deal-breaker for excavators and wheel loaders of this size. More important than the figure are the undercarriage, pin clearance, drive system and hydraulics – and whether maintenance records are available.
Can I lease a Liebherr machine or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
