CLAAS at a glance
CLAAS is a family-run business based in Harsewinkel, Westphalia. August Claas founded the company in 1913; in 1919, it moved to Harsewinkel, where its headquarters remain to this day. In 1921, August Claas filed a patent for the knotting mechanism, which shaped the development of sheaf binders and, later, balers; this was followed in 1936 by the MDB, Europe’s first fully functional combine harvester, and in 1953 by the first self-propelled CLAAS combine harvester. The LEXION series was launched in 1995. Between 2003 and 2008, CLAAS gradually took over the tractor division of Renault Agriculture in Le Mans – which is why older second-hand tractors are still marketed as Renault Ares, Celtis, Ergos or Temis.
In the 2025 financial year, CLAAS generated a turnover of 4.9 billion euros, invested around 320 million euros in research and development, and employed 11,654 staff. Its production sites are located in Harsewinkel, Paderborn, Bad Saulgau, Le Mans, Metz, Hungary, Krasnodar in Russia, Omaha (USA) and Chandigarh in India, amongst others.

LEXION, TUCANO, ARION: what lies behind the model names
CLAAS classifies its combine harvesters according to their threshing system: the LEXION 5000 and 6000 are shaker models, whilst the LEXION 7000 and 8000 are hybrid models featuring ROTO PLUS residual grain separation; the 5000 and 7000 have a threshing drum width of 1,420 mm, whilst the 6000 and 8000 have a width of 1,700 mm. The range extends from the LEXION 5300 with 313 PS to the LEXION 8900 with 790 PS. In the TUCANO range, the 300 series features the conventional threshing system with shakers, the 400 series the APS threshing system, and the 500 series the hybrid machine with a rotor. For tractors, the suffix indicates the transmission: CMATIC is the CLAAS continuously variable transmission (available on the ARION since 2014), whilst HEXASHIFT is the powershift transmission. CEMOS is the CLAAS system for machine optimisation in combine harvesters, forage harvesters and tractors. The SCORPION telescopic loader has an interesting history: developed with Kramer in 2005 and built in Pfullendorf, it has been manufactured by Liebherr in Telfs (Austria) since 2018.
| Model | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| ARION 400–600 | Mid-range tractor, CMATIC or HEXASHIFT | Grassland, farm work, transport |
| AXION 830 | 235 PS, 6-cylinder | Arable farming, heavy tillage |
| AXION 850 | 264 PS | Large-scale farming, contract work |
| XERION | Large tractor, Trac, Trac VC, Saddle Trac | Contractors, slurry, heavy haulage |
| LEXION 760 / 770 | Hybrid combine harvester, also TERRA TRAC | Most commonly traded LEXION model: large-scale farms, contract threshing |
| TUCANO 420–450 | APS threshing system, shaker | Medium-sized farms, sloping terrain |
| JAGUAR 950 / 960 | Forage harvester | Maize and grass silage, contract farming |
| QUADRANT 5300 FC | Square baler with FINE CUT | Straw and hay in large quantities |
What we look for in used CLAAS machinery
Combine harvesters and forage harvesters: check engine and drum hours separately; check for wear on the threshing drum, forage cutting unit, knife drum and conveyor elements; check the condition of the cutting unit and feed mechanism; on TERRA TRAC models, check the track system.
Tractors: gearbox under load (CMATIC without jerking, HEXASHIFT shifts smoothly), hydraulics, PTO, front hydraulics and cab suspension; check that operating hours match the maintenance records.
Bales and grassland equipment: knotters and binding units, pick-up, rotors, crankshafts and chain drives; for mowers, the cutter bar and discs; for rakes, the cam track and tine arms.
Electronics and documentation: Read out the fault memory and terminal (CEBIS, CIS); check the operating licence or registration, service logbook and documentation relating to existing steering systems and licences.
CLAAS at our premises: Dealership and stock
Mecklenburger Landtechnik in Gülzow-Prüzen manages our CLAAS stock: harvesters, tractors, mowers, rakes and balers, plus SCORPION telescopic loaders – with year of manufacture and operating hours listed in the advert. You can find comparable machinery under Fendt, John Deere and New Holland, and grassland machinery under Krone and Kuhn.
Frequently asked questions about CLAAS
What is the difference between LEXION and TUCANO?
LEXION is the large combine harvester range for large farms and contractors, whilst TUCANO is the mid-range model. Both are available with a shaker or as a hybrid with rotor-based residual grain separation; the LEXION is larger, more powerful and wider.
Which CLAAS combine harvesters are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
In the large machine category, the LEXION 760 and 770, as well as the LEXION 750, 670 and 570; in the mid-range, the TUCANO 420 to 450. Older DOMINATOR models are also still very common on the second-hand market.
What does CMATIC mean in relation to CLAAS tractors?
CMATIC is the CLAAS continuously variable transmission with a power split, featuring both hydrostatic and mechanical branches. HEXASHIFT is the powershift transmission. The type of transmission fitted is usually indicated in the model name or in the advertisement.
Why are older CLAAS tractors called Renault?
Between 2003 and 2008, CLAAS took over the tractor division of Renault Agriculture in Le Mans. The Renault tractors Ares, Celtis, Ergos and Temis are the predecessors of the CLAAS tractors and are serviced via the CLAAS network.
Who manufactures the CLAAS SCORPION?
The SCORPION was launched in 2005 in collaboration with Kramer and was built in Pfullendorf. Since 2018, Liebherr has been manufacturing it in Telfs, Austria.
What should I look out for when buying a second-hand combine harvester?
As well as engine hours, you should check the drum hours, the condition of the threshing basket, shakers or rotors, the cutting unit and feed mechanism, and ensure there is a clear maintenance history. Have the fault memory read out and ask about any cutting units and trailers supplied.
