Krone at a glance
Bernhard Krone and his wife Anna founded a smithy in Spelle (Emsland district) in 1906. The craft business developed into an agricultural machinery manufacturer: in 1957 came the Optimat manure spreader, followed in 1963 by the ‘Alleslader’, the first loader wagon. In 1977, Krone introduced its first round baler (KR 180), followed in 1993 by the BiG Pack large-bale baler, in 1996 by the self-propelled BiG M mower-conditioner, and in 2000 by the first BiG X forage harvester. According to the manufacturer, the BiG X 1180, with 1,156 PS, became the world’s most powerful forage harvester in 2018. The agricultural machinery division now operates as Maschinenfabrik Bernard Krone or Krone Agriculture SE and is run by the fourth generation of the Krone family.
In 1971, the manufacture of lorry trailers began in nearby Werlte. This grew into the Krone Commercial Vehicle Group, with plants in Werlte, Herzlake, Lübtheen, Dinklage (axle manufacturer Gigant), as well as in Turkey and the Netherlands. Both divisions form part of the Krone Group, which generated a turnover of around 2.3 billion euros in the 2024/25 financial year – of which 845.7 million euros came from agricultural machinery and around 1.39 billion euros from commercial vehicles.

What the Krone model designation reveals
Krone combines model series names with numbers and abbreviations. For the Comprima round balers, ‘F’ stands for the fixed chamber (F 125: 1.25 m; F 155: semi-variable 1.25–1.50 m), V for the variable chamber (V 150: 1.00–1.50 m, V 180: up to 1.80 m); XC denotes the XCut cutting rotor with 17 or 26 knives, whilst CF/CV refers to the baler-wrapper combination. For the BiG Pack, the number indicates the bale channel: 1270 = 120 x 70 cm, 1290 = 120 x 90 cm, 870 = 80 x 70 cm; XC denotes the XCut cutting unit, VC the VariCut with up to 51 blades, and HDP the high-pressure system. For the EasyCut mowers, the number roughly indicates the working width (B 1000: up to 10.10 m); CV stands for the tine conditioner, CR for the roller conditioner, and Collect for swath merging. With the Swadro, S and TS models produce a side swath, whilst TC models produce a centre swath (two to six rotors). For loading and forage transport trailers, the number roughly corresponds to the loading capacity (MX 330 = 33 m³, ZX 430 = 43 m³); GL means without, GD with metering rollers.

What we look for in second-hand Krone machinery
Cutting bars and conditioners: With the EasyCut, we check for running noise and oil in the cutting bar, the condition of the blade holders and skids, and the SafeCut safety mechanism on the cutting discs. For the conditioner, check the tines (CV) or rollers (CR) for wear.
Baling units: Inspect the bale counter, pick-up tines, cutting rotor and knives; on the Comprima, check the NovoGrip bar chain conveyor; on the BiG Pack, check the knotter, needles and piston guide. Whether the machine is fitted with XCut, VariCut or HDP significantly affects its value.
BiG X forage harvester: Check the engine and drum operating hours separately; check the blades, counter-blade and corn cracker for wear. The engine generation (Mercedes up to around 2010, then MAN, and Liebherr from 2017) and the wheel motors are among the most important points to check.
Rakes, tedders, forage trailers: tine arms, cam track and rotor gearbox on the rake; tines and drive shafts on the tedder; on the forage trailer: rotor, cutter bar, scraper floor and metering rollers.
