Which planer is right for your production?
Surface planers: Kölle and Kölle HA51 for planing a surface and an edge at a right angle – the first step before the timber goes into the thickness planer. The table length and planing width are crucial; typical dimensions are 400 to 630 mm.
Thickness planers: The Bäuerle 125/02 and Panhans 436 (built in 2007) plane the surfaced workpiece parallel to size. Panhans manufactures heavy-duty machines in Sigmaringen for continuous operation in joinery workshops.
Four-sided planers for joinery workshops: the Weinig Unimat 23, 23 E and 23 EL, as well as the Profimat 23 and 23E, machine all four sides in a single pass, with a working width of 230 mm and usually four to six spindles. They replace planing and thicknessing machines and produce profiles, mouldings and tongue-and-groove boards. In addition, there is the French Guilliet KXY as an affordable entry-level model and the Unimat 23 SP as an automatic planing and splitting machine, which splits boards into several mouldings after planing.
High-performance automatic rebating machines: Weinig Hydromat 17B and Hydromat 25 R for high-feed rate mass production. The Hydromat series is designed for the production of mouldings, profiles and window timber in multi-shift operation.
What we look for in second-hand planing machines
Spindles and bearings: Running noise and concentricity of each spindle, play in the bearings, condition of the spindle mounts. For four-sided planers, we enquire about operating hours and usage – single-shift joinery or mass production.
Tooling system: Whether it’s a Hydro clamping system or Weinig PowerLock, whether cutter shafts with planer knives or spiral cutter shafts with indexable inserts – the tooling system determines set-up time and running costs. Tools and cutter heads supplied as standard significantly increase the value.
Tables and feed: Planing tables must not have any pitting or scoring; they must be level and parallel. For the feed mechanism, we check the rollers, gearbox and the feed rate setting in m/min.
Electrics and control system: For the E and EL variants of the Unimat, check the electronic positioning; for other models, check handwheels, scales and stops. Older control systems are robust, and spare parts for Weinig are readily available.
Safety: Safety guards, a kickback protection device on the thickness planer, a bridge guard on the surface planer and a functioning dust extraction system are essential.

Four-sided planer or jointer and thicknesser?
If you mainly produce individual parts, a planer and thicknesser will suffice. As soon as you’re producing mouldings, profiles or squared timbers in batches, a four-sided planer saves several work steps and delivers dimensionally accurate parts in a single pass.
How many spindles does a four-sided planer need?
Four spindles are sufficient for simple planing to size. With five or six spindles, you can also profile the wood or machine one side twice, for example for window scantlings or profiled boards.
Is a helical cutter shaft worth it?
Spiral cutter shafts with indexable inserts run more quietly, are less likely to snag on knots and when the grain direction changes, and individual cutting edges can be rotated rather than having to sharpen all the cutters. They are worthwhile when processing large quantities of hardwood and frequently changing timber types.
What does the Unimat 23 SP stand for?
The Unimat 23 SP is an automatic planing and splitting machine: after planing, a saw spindle cuts the board into several strips. This eliminates the need for a separate multi-blade saw.
