SMV at a glance
SMV stands for Silverdalens Mekaniska Verkstad, a workshop founded in 1947 in the village of Silverdalen in the Småland region of southern Sweden. In 1959, SMV delivered its first forklift truck – Småland, with its timber industry, became the centre of Swedish heavy-duty forklift manufacturing. In 1994, nine industry experts, including the brothers Conny and Roger Persson, took over the company; in 1995, it moved to a new factory in Markaryd and launched the A-series. The first SMV reachstacker followed in the mid-1990s, and in 1999 a barge handler for transhipment onto inland waterway vessels.
In September 2004, the Finnish crane manufacturer Konecranes acquired SMV Lifttrucks AB, which at the time, with a workforce of 85, was manufacturing heavy-duty forklifts and reach stackers ranging from 10 to 60 tonnes. This became Konecranes Lifttrucks AB, and at the same time, Generation B was launched. In 2013, the company unveiled what it claimed was the world’s first hybrid reach stacker; in 2014, Generation C; in 2020 the E-VER electric forklift, and in 2021 the 10,000th forklift was delivered. In May 2026, the modular Generation D was launched at TOC Europe in Hamburg, initially featuring diesel and electric reach stackers. Konecranes is based in Hyvinkää (Finland), is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki and generated a turnover of around 4.2 billion euros in 2024.

What the SMV model designation reveals
For forklifts, the format is simple: load capacity in tonnes – load centre of gravity in millimetres + generation. An SMV 16-1200C lifts 16 t with a load centre of 1,200 mm and belongs to Generation C (from 2014); a 16-1200B is the same load capacity model from Generation B (from 2004). For reach stackers, the first two digits represent the lifting capacity in the first row, and the next two for the second row: the SMV 4531 lifts 45 t in the first row and 31 t in the second row of containers. The ‘T’ stands for the top-lift spreader for 20- and 40-foot containers, whilst the following letter again denotes the generation (TB = Generation B, TC = Generation C). Further suffixes describe the variant, such as ‘BH’ for barge handlers. For spare parts, in addition to the type, the serial number on the type plate is required.

What we look for in a second-hand SMV
Mast, fork carriage and centre of gravity: check the mast profiles, chains, fork tines and fork positioner. SMV forklifts are often used with a 1,200 mm load centre of gravity for long or bulky loads – always compare the load capacity stated in the advert with the load centre of gravity.
Powertrain: The engine (in the C generation, e.g. the Volvo TAD871VE with 185 kW), powershift transmission and drive axle are the most expensive components. Check gear-shifting performance under load, brakes, oil leaks and maintenance records.
Boom and spreader on the reach stacker: Check the sliding blocks, telescopic and lifting cylinders, slewing mechanism and twist locks; the load chart for the second and third rows must be suitable for the intended use.
Generation and documentation: Compare the generation (B, C or D) and year of manufacture on the type plate with the advertisement; check the operating hours and service reports, and ensure proof of the annual UVV inspection is provided. Machines fitted with Konecranes telematics (TRUCONNECT) often provide additional operational data.
