Yanmar at a glance
Yanmar was founded in March 1912 by Magokichi Yamaoka in Osaka. According to the company, it launched the world’s first practical small diesel engine in 1933, and the industry’s first mini-excavator in 1968. In the mid-1990s, the ViO series followed, featuring a true zero-tail design: when turning, the rear never extends beyond the width of the tracks – now standard on tight construction sites. In 2025, the 300,000th mini-excavator rolled off the production line at the Chikugo plant in Japan. The group generated turnover of around 1.08 trillion yen in the 2024 financial year, with just under 60 per cent of this coming from overseas.
For the European market, Yanmar Compact Equipment has been manufacturing mini-excavators in Saint-Dizier, France, since 1989; the plant in Crailsheim, Baden-Württemberg, has been in operation since 2016. This site previously produced wheel loaders and mobile excavators under the Schaeff brand (founded in 1937, acquired by Terex in 2001); Yanmar purchased the plant in October 2016 and now manufactures Yanmar wheel loaders and mobile excavators there. Yanmar Compact Equipment EMEA employs over 900 people and works with more than 170 dealers.

ViO or SV: what the Yanmar model designation reveals
The two mini-excavator families differ primarily at the rear. ViO models are zero-tail excavators: the upper structure and counterweight remain within the track width when turning – ideal for working alongside house walls, in trenches next to traffic and in courtyards. SV models have a conventional rear end that protrudes slightly when turning; as a result, they are usually more stable for their size and have greater lifting capacity to the side. The number in the name roughly indicates the weight class: a ViO17 weighs around 1.8 t, a ViO50 around 4.9 t, and a ViO80 around 8 t. The suffix after the hyphen (-6, -7, -6B) indicates the model series; older machines often still bear the designation ‘-2’ or ‘-3’. For wheel loaders, ‘V’ stands for wheel loader; for mobile excavators, ‘B…W’ denotes the wheeled version; and for dumpers, ‘C’ denotes the tracked version.
| Model | Operating weight | Type | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| SV08-1C | 1.0 t | Conventional | Gardening and landscaping, through doors and gates |
| ViO17 / SV17VT | 1.7–1.8 t | Zero-tail / conventional | Service connections, trenches, car trailers |
| ViO25 / ViO26 / SV26 | 2.7–2.8 t | Zero-tail / conventional | Sewer and pipeline construction, driveways |
| ViO33 / ViO35 / ViO38 | 3.3–3.7 t | Zero-tail | All-rounder for civil engineering |
| ViO50 / ViO57 | 4.9–5.5 t | Zero-tail | Excavation pits, sewer construction in roadways |
| SV60 / ViO80 | 5.7–8.1 t | Conventional / zero-tail | Earthworks, heavy attachments |
| SV86 / SV100 | 8.7–9.8 t | conventional | Compact excavator replacement on large construction sites |
| V80 / V100 / V120 | 4.9–7.0 t | Wheel loaders | Farm, building yard, gardening and landscaping |

What we look out for in a second-hand Yanmar
Undercarriage and tracks: Rubber tracks, track rollers, idler wheels and track shoes are the most expensive wear parts on a mini-excavator. Check the condition and tension of the tracks; look out for worn-out track rollers.
Bolts, bushings, slewing ring: Check for play in the bucket, arm and boom bolts, as well as the swing bracket and slewing ring. Zero-tail swing excavators have tight clearance – inspect the hoses on the swing bracket and boom for signs of chafing.
Engine and hydraulics: Yanmar manufactures its own diesel engines. Check cold start, smoke emissions, oil leaks and whether hydraulic movements are smooth under load; compare operating hours with the service log.
Equipment and documentation: Quick-change couplers (mechanical or hydraulic), auxiliary hydraulics, bucket packages and tiltrotators significantly increase the value. Ensure you are provided with the CE marking, declaration of conformity and UVV inspection certificate.

Frequently asked questions about Yanmar construction machinery
What is the difference between Yanmar ViO and SV models?
ViO mini-excavators are zero-tail swing models – the rear remains within the track width when turning. SV mini-excavators have a conventional rear that protrudes slightly, but are generally more stable for machines of the same size. The ViO is the first choice for tight construction sites against walls and on roads.
What does the number on Yanmar mini-excavators mean?
It roughly indicates the weight class: ViO17 ≈ 1.8 t, ViO33 ≈ 3.3 t, ViO50 ≈ 4.9 t, ViO80 ≈ 8 t. The suffix, such as -6 or -7, indicates the model year. The exact operating weight is stated in the advert.
Which Yanmar mini-excavators are most commonly traded second-hand?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, these are primarily the ViO80, ViO25, ViO50, ViO57, ViO17, SV08, ViO33 and SV26. Spare parts and attachments are therefore readily available.
Which Yanmar models will fit on a car trailer?
Models weighing up to around 1.8 t, such as the SV08, SV10, ViO12 and ViO17, can be transported behind many towing vehicles using a suitable trailer. The key factors are the permissible trailer load and the total weight including the trailer and buckets.
Does Yanmar also manufacture wheel loaders?
Yes. Since Yanmar took over the factory of the former manufacturer Schaeff in Crailsheim in 2016, it has been manufacturing wheel loaders (V7 to V120, approx. 4 to 7 t) and mobile excavators (B75W to B110W) there. Older Schaeff wheel loaders continue to be serviced through the Yanmar network.
Are there any electric Yanmar mini-excavators?
Yes, the SV17e is a fully electric mini-excavator with an operating weight of around 2 t and a 23.5 kWh battery. Yanmar has also unveiled an electric C08 crawler dumper and a V8e wheel loader prototype.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Yanmar mini-excavator?
Provided there is a verifiable maintenance history, 3,000 to 5,000 hours is no problem for a mini excavator; Yanmar diesel engines are considered to be durable. The key factors are the undercarriage, bolt play and the hydraulics – these are often more important than the sheer number of operating hours.
Can I lease a Yanmar excavator or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
