Jungheinrich at a glance
Friedrich Jungheinrich founded the company on 7 August 1953 in Hamburg as “H. Jungheinrich & Co. Maschinenfabrik”. The group’s headquarters remain in Hamburg-Wandsbek to this day. The preference shares have been listed on the stock exchange since 30 August 1990; the ordinary shares remain with the families of the founder’s daughters – making Jungheinrich one of the few large family-run companies in the intralogistics sector. Manufacturing takes place in Germany at sites including Norderstedt, Moosburg an der Isar, Landsberg (Saalekreis) and Lüneburg, as well as at a plant in Qingpu near Shanghai. Jungheinrich refurbishes its own used equipment in Klipphausen near Dresden.
In the 2025 financial year, Jungheinrich generated turnover of around 5.5 billion euros and employed just over 21,400 people; new business orders amounted to around 132,000 vehicles. In addition to forklift trucks and warehouse technology, the Group is expanding its automatic warehousing and driverless systems, partly through the acquisitions of arculus (2021), Magazino and Storage Solutions (2023). The trade name ‘Ameise’ is a brand within the Jungheinrich group and is often used in everyday language as a synonym for a pallet truck.

What the Jungheinrich model designation reveals
The abbreviations follow a fixed pattern. The first letter stands for the drive type – E for electric, D for diesel, T for LPG – whilst the following letters indicate the model type: EFG, DFG and TFG are counterbalanced forklifts; ETV (along with ETM and ETR) are reach trucks; EJE, ERE and ESE are electric low-lift pallet trucks with walk-behind, ride-on or stationary/side-mounted seats; EJC, ERC and ERD are tugger forklifts; ECE are horizontal order pickers and EKS are vertical order pickers; EKX are order pickers and three-way forklifts for narrow aisles. In the three-digit number, the last two digits indicate the load capacity in 100 kg, whilst the first digit denotes the series: An EFG 216 is a Series 2 electric forklift with a capacity of 1.6 t, an ETV 214 is a reach truck with a capacity of 1.4 t, and an ERE 225 is a ride-on pallet truck with a capacity of 2.5 t. For electric forklifts, series 1 and 2 are three-wheel forklifts, whilst series 3 to 5 are four-wheel forklifts. An appended ‘i’ (e.g. ETV 216i or EFG 320i) on current models indicates a lithium-ion battery; letters such as ‘C’ or ‘Q’ in models like the ETV C16 or ETV Q20 denote separate special series.
| Type | Specifications | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| EFG 216 | 1.6 t, 3-wheel, electric | Jungheinrich’s best-selling forklift: warehouses, production, narrow aisles |
| EFG 220 / EFG 320 | 2.0 t, 3-wheel or 4-wheel | Loading bays, lorry loading, multi-shift operation |
| EFG 425 / EFG 430 | 2.5–3.0 t, 4-wheel | heavy pallets, indoor and outdoor use |
| DFG 425 / TFG 425 / DFG 430 | 2.5–3.0 t, diesel or LPG | Yards, building materials suppliers, outdoor storage |
| ETV 214 / ETV 216 | 1.4–1.6 t, reach truck | High-bay racking, narrow aisles |
| EJC 110 / EJC 112 | 1.0–1.2 t, pedestrian-operated forklift | small warehouses, shelving up to medium height |
| EJE 116 / EJE 120 | 1.6–2.0 t, walk-behind | Short distances, loading and unloading of lorries |
| ERE 120 / ERE 225 | 2.0–2.5 t, rider-operated | Medium distances, goods reception |
| ECE 225 | 2.5 t, horizontal order picker | Picking up to the second shelf level |
What we look for in a second-hand Jungheinrich
Battery and charger: With electric trucks, the battery determines the running costs. Check the age, capacity and cell condition; for lead-acid batteries, check the acid level and look out for corrosion; ensure a suitable charger is included. Machines with lithium-ion batteries (designation ‘i’) should be charged during breaks – charging technology and battery history should be included in the advert.
Mast, chains, forks: For reach trucks and electric forklift trucks, check for play in the mast profiles, chain elongation and fork wear; for reach trucks, also check the guidance of the reach frame. Lifting height, mast type (duplex, triplex) and free lift must be stated in the advertisement.
Tiller, wheels, operator protection: For pallet trucks and tiller-operated forklifts, inspect the tiller head, the tiller’s braking function, and the drive and load rollers; for ride-on models such as ERE and ESE, check the platform and the side guards.
Year of manufacture and documentation: Compare the type plate with the advert; check the operating hours counter and the service log. For Germany, ensure proof of the annual inspection in accordance with DGUV Regulation 68 is provided.

Frequently asked questions about Jungheinrich
What do EFG, DFG and TFG stand for at Jungheinrich?
The first letter indicates the drive type: E for electric, D for diesel, T for LPG. The abbreviations EFG, DFG and TFG refer to counterbalanced forklifts (front-loading forklifts). An EFG 216 is therefore an electric forklift, a DFG 425 a diesel forklift and a TFG 425 a LPG forklift.
What does the number in the model designation mean?
The last two digits represent the load capacity in 100 kg, whilst the first digit indicates the series. An EFG 320 has a load capacity of 2.0 t and belongs to the four-wheel Series 3, whilst an ETV 214 is a reach truck with a load capacity of 1.4 t.
Which Jungheinrich machines are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
On the major second-hand marketplaces, the electric forklifts from the EFG family lead the way, particularly the EFG 216 and EFG 320, followed by the EJC 110/112 pedestrian forklifts and the ETV 214/216 reach trucks. Among pallet trucks, the EJE and ERE models are common, whilst for internal combustion forklifts, the DFG and TFG 425/430 are popular.
What is the difference between the EJE, ERE and ESE?
All three are electric low-lift pallet trucks. With the EJE, the operator walks alongside the truck; the ERE has a folding platform for the operator to ride on; and the ESE has a standing or side-seating platform for long distances and high throughput.
What does the ‘i’ stand for on newer Jungheinrich machines?
It denotes trucks with a lithium-ion battery, for example the ETV 216i or EFG 320i. The current reach trucks are supplied with lithium-ion technology as standard.
Is “Ameise” a Jungheinrich product?
‘Ameise’ is a registered trade mark associated with Jungheinrich and is often used in everyday language to refer to manual or electric pallet trucks in general – much like a generic term.
How many operating hours are acceptable for a second-hand Jungheinrich?
That depends heavily on the type of machine. For electric forklifts and reach trucks, the condition of the battery is the key factor; a new or reconditioned battery significantly enhances the value of a machine with high operating hours. The maintenance log and safety inspection are often more indicative than the sheer number of operating hours.
Can I lease a Jungheinrich forklift or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings, you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
