Kaeser at a glance

KAESER KOMPRESSOREN is a family-run business based in Coburg, Upper Franconia. Carl Kaeser Sr. founded it on 27 June 1919 as a mechanical engineering workshop; the fourth generation has been in management since 2018, and the company has operated as an SE since 2013. Kaeser employs around 8,800 people worldwide, manufactures at its Coburg (main) plant, as well as in Gera and Göttingen, and sells to over 140 countries. Two milestones characterise every Kaeser compressor: in 1973, Kaeser developed the SIGMA profile, an energy-saving rotor profile for screw compressors, which is still used in every Kaeser compressor stage today. And since the takeover of the French manufacturer Compresseurs Bernard in 1982, Kaeser has been manufacturing the MOBILAIR range of mobile construction compressors.

Kaeser manufactures the screw stage, control system and housing in-house. For buyers of a second-hand machine, this means that spare parts come from a single source, and every authorised Kaeser dealer can service any MOBILAIR – including older models.

MOBILAIR: what the model designation reveals

The number after the ‘M’ indicates the performance class, roughly in tenths of m³/min: an M 20 delivers 2.0 m³/min, an M 50 around 5 m³/min, and an M 122 just over 11 m³/min. Older type plates show “M 50” with a space, whilst newer ones show “M50” – they both mean the same thing. The suffixes indicate the specifications: PE = polyethylene housing (rust-free, lighter), pV = pressure-volume control (pressure continuously adjustable, the flow rate adapts accordingly), G = built-in generator (e.g. ‘M 31 G 6.5 kVA’), E = electric motor, utility = version without undercarriage for mounting on vehicles. The small M 13 to M 17 models are powered by petrol engines, the compact diesel models by Kubota engines, whilst larger models, depending on the year of manufacture, may also be fitted with Deutz or Caterpillar engines.

What we look for in a second-hand Kaeser

SIGMA stage and oil: The compressor stage is considered to be very durable; the oil history is crucial. Milky oil indicates water in the system, whilst oil mist on the valves suggests a worn-out separator. The compressor must maintain the rated pressure when idling and regulate it smoothly under load.

Small compressors M 13 to M 17: The petrol engine is robust, but fuel ages – check the carburettor and fuel tank if the machine has been out of use for a long time. The carrying frame and wheel set are accessories and are not always included.

Cowl, engine, emission standard: PE cowls do not rust; with sheet metal cowls from older model years, check for rust on the edges and on the seals. Stage V machines (from 2019 onwards) are permitted on any construction site; older emission standards are cheaper but are not authorised everywhere.

Documentation: Type-approval for the chassis, CE conformity, pressure vessel inspection and service log – these are usually complete at authorised Kaeser dealers. For stationary compressors, also note the operating hours as recorded by the control system (SIGMA CONTROL) and the date of the last service.

Kaeser with us: Dealers and stock

GSK Baumaschinen in Hanhofen supplies Kaeser MOBILAIR M 13, M 17, M 59 PE, M 122 and M 125 brand new from stock – on request as a complete package with ground anchor, aftercooler or dry ice blasting unit – as well as selected second-hand machines. Kraus Baumaschinen in Frankenthal is an authorised Kaeser dealer with its own workshop and stocks new and used MOBILAIR models ranging from the compact class up to the M 122, all with a maintenance history. You can find comparable machines under Atlas Copco, CompAir and Doosan.

Frequently asked questions about Kaeser compressors

What does the number on the Kaeser MOBILAIR mean?

It indicates the performance class, roughly in tenths of m³/min: M 20 ≈ 2 m³/min, M 50 ≈ 5 m³/min, M 122 ≈ 11 m³/min. The suffixes indicate the features: PE = plastic casing, pV = pressure-volume control, G = generator, E = electric motor, utility = stationary version without undercarriage.

What are the specifications of a Kaeser M 50?

The M 50 delivers around 5 m³/min at 7 bar and is one of the most commonly traded second-hand Kaeser compressors – enough to power two to three demolition hammers or a hammer drill with some reserve. It is also available as the M 50 PE (plastic casing) and as the electric M 50E.

Which Kaeser model is suitable for dry ice blasting?

Small blasting units run on an M 17 (1.6 m³/min, 7 bar), whilst professional units require 3 to 5 m³/min at up to 10 bar with dry air – i.e. an M 31 or M 59 PE with an aftercooler; for large nozzles, the M 122 or M 125. You can find suitable combinations under ‘Dry Ice Blasting Machines’.

How long does a Kaeser construction compressor last?

The SIGMA screw stage achieves 20,000 operating hours or more when oil, filter and separator changes are carried out as scheduled. Second-hand machines with 5,000 to 10,000 hours and a verifiable maintenance history are perfectly acceptable.

Kaeser or Atlas Copco?

Both manufacture their own screw stages and have an extensive service network. Kaeser is particularly strong and economical when it comes to compact compressors up to 5 m³/min, whilst Atlas Copco offers a wider range of high-pressure and generator models. The decisive factors are proximity to a dealer, maintenance history and price.

Are Kaeser compressors available in electric or oil-free versions?

Yes. The electric models include the M 13E, M 27E, M 31E, M 50E and the large M 255E for industrial halls and city centres. The two-stage M 500-2 delivers oil-free compressed air at up to 45.8 m³/min – suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications, for example.

Can I transport a Kaeser M 17 in a van?

Yes. The M 13 and M 17 weigh around 200 kg and stand on skids or a carrying frame; they can be loaded using a lifting eye. From the M 20 upwards, the machines are mounted on a trailer chassis – up to 750 kg unbraked with a Category B driving licence.

Can I lease a Kaeser compressor or finance it via hire purchase?

For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
