View on GoogleBuy second-hand balers – CLAAS, John Deere, Krone, New Holland and Maschio, direct from specialist dealers. We list square balers for large bales, round balers with fixed and variable chambers, and baler-wrapper combinations for silage. Prices range from around €15,000 for older John Deere round balers to around €140,000 for a CLAAS Quadrant of a more recent model year. Each listing specifies the number of bales, cutting unit, binding system, tyres and year of manufacture.
Which baler is right for your farm?
Variable-chamber round balers: CLAAS Variant 580 RC Pro (model years 2023–2026, approx. €45,000), John Deere 864N Maxi Cut and 990. Bale diameter is infinitely adjustable, ideal for hay and straw with varying requirements for bale size and weight.
Fixed-chamber round balers: Deutz-Fahr Fixmaster 235. The fixed chamber with a 1.25 m bale diameter compresses the core less, but forms a firm outer layer – tried and tested for silage and straw on grassland farms.
Baling and wrapping combinations: CLAAS Rollant 454 Uniwrap (approx. €36,000), Maschio Mondiale 120 Combi (unused, approx. €46,900) and Krone Ultima CF 155 XC (approx. €27,500). Baling and wrapping in a single machine saves on labour and the need for a tractor. The Krone Ultima continues baling without stopping whilst the finished bale is being wrapped.
Square balers for large bales: CLAAS Quadrant 5200 FC Tandem and 5300 FC Evolution (built between 2019 and 2024, approx. €97,000–140,000), New Holland BB 960 RT. High throughput and space-saving storage for straw, hay and lucerne – the machine for contractors and farms that sell straw. From approx. 180 PS.
Retrofit: Krassort Special Cut 180 as a cutting unit retrofit for shorter chop lengths.
What we look for in used balers
Bale counter and usage profile: The bale counter is to balers what operating hours are to a tractor. Square balers used for contract work reach 60,000–100,000 bales; a straw operation producing 20,000 bales a year has a different profile to a machine used predominantly for silage.
Knotter and binding: For square balers, check the number of knotter hooks, the knotter hooks themselves, the twine cutter and the double-knotter function; ideally, have a test bale tied. For round balers, check the net and film binding, as well as the blades and brakes of the net wrapper.
Pick-up and cutting unit: Tines, tine carriers, cam track and feeler wheel. For the cutting unit, check the condition and number of blades, the blade retention system and the rotor teeth. A worn rotor is an expensive repair.
Chamber, piston, drive: Round bales: rollers, chains, belts and their bearings, rust in the chamber. Square bales: piston guide, piston rollers, main gearbox, flywheel and side walls of the baling channel. Cam-type clutches and shear bolts indicate the machine’s load history.
Electronics: The terminal or ISOBUS connection, pressure control, moisture measurement and weighing must all be in working order. For combined wrappers, also check the wrapping arm hydraulics, film tear sensors and bale discharge.

Brands and dealers
With its Quadrant, Rollant and Variant ranges, CLAAS is one of Europe’s market leaders in balers and accounts for the majority of our fleet. Krone is regarded as a pioneer in non-stop round balers with its Ultima model, John Deere (744 Premium, 864N, 990) and Deutz-Fahr are widely used for round balers, whilst New Holland’s BigBaler range is popular for large bales. Maschio complements the range with fixed-chamber balers and combined baler-wrappers.
The machines are predominantly sourced from Mecklenburger Landtechnik in northern Germany, with a wide selection of CLAAS equipment. Filter by manufacturer, model, year of manufacture and price.
Frequently asked questions about used balers
How much does a used baler cost?
Older round balers cost around €15,000–20,000, whilst newer variable-chamber models cost around €45,000. Bale press and wrapper combinations cost around €27,000–47,000, whilst square bale presses for large bales cost around €97,000–140,000, depending on the year of manufacture.
Fixed or variable chamber?
The variable-chamber baler compresses the material consistently throughout and allows for different diameters – ideal for hay and straw intended for sale. The fixed-chamber baler is simpler, more economical and has proven its worth for silage with 1.25-metre bales.
Round bales or square bales?
Square bales can be stacked more tightly and are easier to transport; large bales are more cost-effective for selling straw and over long transport distances. Round bales are the more economical choice for silage, pasture farms and smaller quantities.
How many bales should a second-hand baler be capable of handling?
For round balers, 15,000–25,000 bales are no problem provided they are well maintained. Square balers used for contract work can handle 80,000 bales or more. The key factors are the knotter, piston, pick-up and maintenance records.
Which tractor is suitable for the baler?
Round balers require around 80–100 PS, whilst wraparound balers require around 110 PS. Square balers need 180–250 PS and a tractor with sufficient weight to slow the baler down when travelling downhill.
Can I lease or finance a baler?
For many listings, you can submit a non-binding leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
