Mercedes-Benz Trucks at a glance
The lorries bearing the star logo are manufactured by Daimler Truck AG, headquartered in Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart. The company traces its roots back to 1896, when Gottlieb Daimler built the first lorry. On 1 December 2021, the lorry and bus business was spun off from what was then Daimler AG; Daimler Truck Holding has been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since 10 December 2021. The group employs around 100,000 people at 35 main sites, generated turnover of around 55.9 billion euros in 2023 and, alongside Mercedes-Benz, operates brands including Freightliner, Western Star, FUSO, BharatBenz and Setra.
At the heart of European lorry production is the Wörth am Rhein plant: The first lorry rolled off the production line there on 14 July 1965; today it is regarded as the world’s largest lorry assembly plant – having produced over 3.6 million lorries and manufacturing up to 470 vehicles a day. The Actros, Arocs, Atego, Econic, Unimog and Zetros are manufactured in Wörth. The Unimog, which has been built by Daimler-Benz in Gaggenau since 1951, has also been manufactured by Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks in Wörth since 2002.

What the Mercedes-Benz model designation reveals
Mercedes-Benz lorry model designations have followed a fixed pattern for decades: the first two digits indicate the gross vehicle weight in tonnes, whilst the last two represent approximately one-tenth of the engine power in PS. An Atego 1224 is therefore a 12-tonne truck with 240 PS, an Actros 1845 an 18-tonne truck with around 450 PS, and an Arocs 3342 a 33-tonne truck with around 420 PS. For three-digit models such as the Atego 816, only the first digit indicates the weight. The letters that follow describe the variant: K stands for tipper, A for all-wheel drive, AK for all-wheel-drive tipper; LS is used in advertisements to denote tractor units. The axle configuration, such as 6x4 or 8x4, indicates the total number of wheels multiplied by the number of driven wheels. As several generations are marketed under the same name – from the Actros MP1 (1996) up to the fifth generation (from 2018) – the year of manufacture and emissions standard are always included in the advert.

| Arocs 3240 / 3243 / 3246 / 3248 8x4 | 32 t, 400–480 PS, four-axle | Construction site tippers, concrete mixers, dump lorries |
| Arocs 3336 / 3342 K 6x4 | 33 t, 360–420 PS, three-axle | Heavy-duty tipper, skip loader |
| Arocs 4145 AK 8x6 / 8x8 | 41 t, 450 PS, all-wheel drive | Off-road, quarry, dump truck |

What we look for in a used Mercedes-Benz lorry
Documents and inspections: Check that the registration certificate, chassis number and model match the advert. Lorries over 7.5 t require an annual general inspection and an interim safety inspection (SP) – check due dates and recent reports, as well as the service history book or maintenance contract.
Tachograph and mileage: The digital tachograph must be inspected regularly; compare the inspection sticker and odometer reading with maintenance records. For tractor units with high mileage, pay particular attention to the gearbox, retarder and clutch.
Tipper, hydraulics and UVV: Check the tipping cylinders, pump, auxiliary drive and hoses for leaks; check the tipper body and side panels for cracks and warping. For tipper bodies and loading cranes, request proof of the annual UVV inspection; for all-wheel-drive tippers (AK), also inspect the transfer box and axles.
Engine, emissions standard and AdBlue: Euro VI lorries are fitted with an SCR catalytic converter, AdBlue and a particulate filter. Have the fault memory, AdBlue dosage and filter condition checked; for older Euro 5 vehicles, check for low-emission zones and toll class.

Frequently asked questions about Mercedes-Benz lorries
What does Arocs 3342 K 6x4 mean?
33 stands for the gross vehicle weight of 33 t, 42 for around 420 PS, and K for tipper. 6x4 means: six wheels, four of which are driven – in other words, a three-axle vehicle with two driven rear axles. This notation applies equally to the Arocs, Actros and Atego.
What is the difference between the Arocs, Actros and Atego?
The Arocs is the construction site lorry with a robust chassis, plenty of ground clearance and all-wheel-drive options. The Actros is designed for long-haul and heavy distribution transport, usually as a tractor unit. The Atego covers light and medium-duty distribution transport, ranging from the 7.5-tonne class up to 15-tonne vehicles.
Which Mercedes-Benz lorries are most commonly traded on the second-hand market?
On the major second-hand vehicle portals, the Sprinter, the Actros – particularly the 1842 to 1851 LS tractor units – the Atego and the Arocs are among the most common model ranges. Among tippers, three- and four-axle Arocs models dominate.
What happened to the Axor and Antos?
The Axor was launched in 2001 and was replaced by two model ranges with the introduction of Euro VI: the Antos for heavy-duty distribution transport and the Arocs for construction sites. The Antos designation was discontinued in 2017; these vehicles have been marketed as Actros ever since.
Which generation of Actros do I have?
The Actros was launched in 1996 (MP1), underwent facelifts in 2003 (MP2) and 2008 (MP3); this was followed in 2011 by a largely redesigned model (MP4), with the fifth generation introduced in 2018. The year of manufacture and emissions standard stated in the advert are the deciding factors.
Are the Unimog and Zetros also part of Mercedes-Benz Trucks?
Yes, both fall under the Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks brand and are built in Wörth. The Unimog is available as a utility vehicle (U 219 to U 535) and in a heavy-duty off-road version (U 4023, U 5023), whilst the Zetros is a heavy-duty off-road tipper lorry.
Are there any electric Mercedes-Benz lorries?
Yes. The eActros 600 has a battery capacity of around 621 kWh and can travel up to 500 km without recharging, whilst the eActros 400 has a capacity of 414 kWh. There’s also the eEconic for local authority and waste management operations, and the eArocs 400 for construction sites.
Can I lease a Mercedes-Benz lorry or finance it via hire purchase?
For many listings – both new and used – you can submit a no-obligation leasing or hire-purchase enquiry directly. You can discuss the terms with the dealer or their finance partner; the purchase and payment are handled directly between you and the seller.
